There was no water for the people to drink at that place, so they rebelled against Moses and Aaron. The people blamed Moses and said, “If only we had died in the Lord’s presence with our brothers! Why have you brought the congregation of the Lord’s people into this wilderness to die, along with all our livestock? Why did you make us leave Egypt and bring us here to this terrible place? This land has no grain, no figs, no grapes, no pomegranates, and no water to drink!” Moses and Aaron turned away from the people and went to the entrance of the Tabernacle, where they fell face down on the ground. Then the glorious presence of the Lord appeared to them, and the Lord said to Moses, “You and Aaron must take the staff and assemble the entire community. As the people watch, speak to the rock over there, and it will pour out its water. You will provide enough water from the rock to satisfy the whole community and their livestock.” Numbers 20:2-8 NLT

Lord God,

Same old same old. No figs, grapes and pomegranates – oh and by the way no water again Moses! Still blaming Moses. Its hard when You are blamed for something You have not done and have shown God’s faithfulness in the same situation before.. But Moses again seeks the Lord with Aaron. It is always easier to serve You with others Lord! Again You give Moses instructions but it has different detail. You show us we need to listen as You do not always answer the same way.

But when we read on Lord, we hear Moses has lost his patience. His words echo annoyance calling them outright rebels. He even complains about always having to find water. And forgetting Your instructions he does what worked last time. He does not speak to the rock he strikes it. And You, God honour Him and still give water. But Moses finds out his rebellion costs him. He will see the promised land, but not enter it (Numbers 10:12).

Later, You, God showed us the power of Your Word. The Word that would become flesh and be our living water (John 7:37-39). Our water from You, our God, the Rock. And we see Your mercy as we see Moses standing with Jesus on the Mount of transfiguration (Matthew 17:3). Looking forward to what Jesus would do to provide a way to You and the eternal promised land. You will have mercy where You will have mercy (Exodus 33:19, Romans 9:15).

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

There’s a wideness in God’s mercy
that is wider than the greatest sea;
and so I know-it covers even me.
There’s a depth to his compassion
that is deeper than I’ll understand;
and so my life is safe within his hands.

His love is deep enough for me,
to cause these blinded eyes to see,
to set this lowly captive free from sin.
His grace is flowing from above,
reflected in the Saviour’s love-
O precious Father, help me take it in.
