“Elisha replied, “Listen to this message from the Lord! This is what the Lord says: By this time tomorrow in the markets of Samaria, six quarts of choice flour will cost only one piece of silver, and twelve quarts of barley grain will cost only one piece of silver]” 2 The officer assisting the king said to the man of God, “That couldn’t happen even if the Lord opened the windows of heaven!” But Elisha replied, “You will see it happen with your own eyes, but you won’t be able to eat any of it!
3 Now there were four men with leprosy sitting at the entrance of the city gates. “Why should we sit here waiting to die?” they asked each other. 4 “We will starve if we stay here, but with the famine in the city, we will starve if we go back there. So we might as well go out and surrender to the Aramean army. If they let us live, so much the better. But if they kill us, we would have died anyway.”” 1 Kings 7:1-4 NLT

Almighty God,

Even though Israel are sinful and not worshipping You as they should. Their King was Jehoram (Joram) the son of Jehoshaphat and Jezebel which says it all. Not a godly upbringing! You still kept watch over them.

I love this story it is worth the read fully 2 Kings 6:24-7:20. Four lepers had this choice: 1. stay where they were and die. 2. Go back to the city and die. 3. Go out and surrender and most probably die. They decide on the most probably as it has the whisker of hope. And You do not let them down. I love that you can answer the smallest whisper of hope in our hearts.

On the other hand the Captain killjoy believes none of it and true to Elisha’s words he pauses in the gate in disbelief and gets trampled to death. What a warning.

Thank you for hearing the smallest whisper of hope in our hearts. Please fan the flame, Holy Spirit.

 “But when Elisha, the man of God, heard that the king of Israel had torn his clothes in dismay, he sent this message to him: “Why are you so upset? Send Naaman to me, and he will learn that there is a true prophet here in Israel.” 9 So Naaman went with his horses and chariots and waited at the door of Elisha’s house. 10 But Elisha sent a messenger out to him with this message: “Go and wash yourself seven times in the Jordan River. Then your skin will be restored, and you will be healed of your leprosy.”

11 But Naaman became angry and stalked away. “I thought he would certainly come out to meet me!” he said. “I expected him to wave his hand over the leprosy and call on the name of the Lord his God and heal me! 12 Aren’t the rivers of Damascus, the Abana and the Pharpar, better than any of the rivers of Israel? Why shouldn’t I wash in them and be healed?” So Naaman turned and went away in a rage. 13 But his officers tried to reason with him and said, “Sir, if the prophet had told you to do something very difficult, wouldn’t you have done it? So you should certainly obey him when he says simply, ‘Go and wash and be cured!’” 14 So Naaman went down to the Jordan River and dipped himself seven times, as the man of God had instructed him. And his skin became as healthy as the skin of a young child, and he was healed!” 2 Kings 5:8-14 NLT

Father of all knowledge and understanding,

The King learned that even a King is just a man in need of God. Elisha learned to hear what You wanted to do in the situation – for good. Naaman learned that pride can stop you from receiving from God but that humility has great reward. His men were willing to give You God the opportunity. And also that You do what You say You will do. And Gehazi unfortunately learnt that greed can make you sick (2 Kings 5:20-26).

And who began this miracle? “At this time Aramean raiders had invaded the land of Israel, and among their captives was a young girl who had been given to Naaman’s wife as a maid.  One day the girl said to her mistress, “I wish my master would go to see the prophet in Samaria. He would heal him of his leprosy.” (2 Kings 5:2,3). A nameless young girl who kept her faith in very difficult circumstances far from home and family.

Keep us humble, knowing we are reliant on You. To be encouragers and content with where You have placed us. And most of all, help us to look for You expectantly in those impossible and difficult situations.

 “Then Elijah said to him, “Stay here; the Lord has sent me to the Jordan. ”And he replied, “As surely as the Lord lives and as you live, I will not leave you.” So the two of them walked on. 7 Fifty men from the company of the prophets went and stood at a distance, facing the place where Elijah and Elisha had stopped at the Jordan. 8 Elijah took his cloak, rolled it up and struck the water with it. The water divided to the right and to the left, and the two of them crossed over on dry ground. 9 When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, “Tell me, what can I do for you before I am taken from you?” “Let me inherit a double portion of your spirit,” Elisha replied. 10 “You have asked a difficult thing,” Elijah said, “yet if you see me when I am taken from you, it will be yours—otherwise, it will not.” 11 As they were walking along and talking together, suddenly a chariot of fire and horses of fire appeared and separated the two of them, and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind. 12 Elisha saw this and cried out, “My father! My father! The chariots and horsemen of Israel!” And Elisha saw him no more. Then he took hold of his garment and tore it in two. 13 Elisha then picked up Elijah’s cloak that had fallen from him and went back and stood on the bank of the Jordan.” 2 Kings 2:6-14 NIV

Father in heaven and on earth,

On going through the Bible I could not miss this passage. Elisha like Solomon gets to ask for what he would most like right there and then. He also does not ask for wealth or an easy life or anything personal. He asks sincerely for the one thing that will enable him to be a prophet for You. To be able to be like Elijah and serve God effectively.

Prophets were acknowledged by how well they could see what You were doing and speak it forth. Warning of wars, danger and when You Lord were telling them to move or stay still. They also did miracles. But always to serve others not for personal benefit.

Elisha had a focused unselfish heart and was granted his prayer. The disciples saw Jesu ascend to heaven (Luke 24:50-53) but he needed no chariots of fire! They wavered and went fishing but there hearts were focused once they understood what had happened and received the fire of the Holy Spirit.

We too can serve You. We need to encourage our hearts and keep our commitment burning in the days when we see no miracles. Its good to check up on our commitment and attitude! We do not always see everything You are doing. And then sometimes we do . . . and can only praise You. The God of Elijah, Elisha and me.
