“Why did I not die at birth? Why did I not perish when I came from the womb? 12 Why did the knees receive me? Or why the breasts, that I should nurse? 13 For now I would have lain still and been quiet, I would have been asleep; Then I would have been at rest 14 With kings and counselors of the earth, Who built ruins for themselves, 15 Or with princes who had gold, Who filled their houses with silver; 16 Or why was I not hidden like a stillborn child, Like infants who never saw light?” Job 3:11-16 NLT

God of life,

I like Job because he speaks his mind. He speaks his feelings, his questions and he is honest with You. I find Job difficult to read but know that not speaking something means it often festers. What is interesting is that his friends are horrified at his honesty. And they have already judged him. Perhaps they have never been depressed or in so much grief and pain. We are not supposed to judge But they sat on the ground with him seven days and nights, and said nothing! Friends?

So Job spoke. Thankyou that Job teaches me to be honestly how I feel and not fear rejection from You God. He would not be losing the friendship of his visitors as he probably never had it! I know You understand because You had to let go and watch as Jesus died alone on the cross. Job here does not wish to end his life he wishes it had not happened. A subtle honest difference.

These friends brought no empathy and not a drop of sympathy. They overstayed their welcome and left no kindness or comfort. Help us to talk to You honestly when other people cannot understand. When someone asks us how we are, help us to answer and ask for prayer. And help us to ask how others are and really want to know and pray with them. Thank you that we have You, Father, Son and Holy Spirit who are with us always to listen and to speak faith, hope and love (1 Corinthians 13:13) into our hearts.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Written by Lucy Milward Booth-Hellberg, who was the eighth and youngest child of William and Catherine Booth, founders of The Salvation Army. At 16 she travelled to serve in India. She was widowed at the age of forty-one, with four children to care for (a fifth child died in infancy). Lucy went on to serve God in Denmark, Norway and South America, before retiring. She certainly had reason to feel discouraged at times!

When you feel weakest, dangers surround,
Subtle temptations, troubles abound,
Nothing seems hopeful, nothing seems glad,
All is despairing, everything sad:

Keep on believing, Jesus is near;
Keep on believing, there’s nothing to fear;
Keep on believing, this is the way;
Faith in the night as well as the day.

If all were easy, if all were bright,
Where would the cross be, and where the fight?
But in the hardness, God gives to you
Chances of proving that you are true.

God is your wisdom, God is your might,
God’s ever near you, guiding aright;
He understands you, knows all you need;
Trusting in him you’ll surely succeed.

Let us press on then, never despair,
Live above feeling, victory’s there;
Jesus can keep us so near to him
That nevermore our faith shall grow dim.

“There once was a man named Job who lived in the land of Uz. He was blameless—a man of complete integrity. He feared God and stayed away from evil. He had seven sons and three daughters. He owned 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 teams of oxen, and 500 female donkeys. He also had many servants. He was, in fact, the richest person in that entire area. Job’s sons would take turns preparing feasts in their homes, and they would also invite their three sisters to celebrate with them. When these celebrations ended—sometimes after several days—Job would purify his children. He would get up early in the morning and offer a burnt offering for each of them. For Job said to himself, “Perhaps my children have sinned and have cursed God in their hearts.” This was Job’s regular practice. Job 1:1-5 NLT

Father God,

Most Bible Scholars place Job as living in the times of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, so this seems a good place to put him in my year through the Bible. A good family man whose children lived all around the area. And like most parent he was worried they did not always behave as they should. He had everything he needed but he still acknowledged his need of You. And took responsibility for his children and prayed that You might forgive them too.

It is a good place to start Lord. Even though we know the rest of the story he didn’t. He just lived one day at a time, doing the best he could, using the influence he had, and keeping in a right relationship with You.

It was what Jesus told us to do. “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” (Matthew 6:34). One day at a time. And we can trust You to be with us tomorrow just the same. So today we pause and give thanks and say sorry for anything we have done wrong or not done right and leave tomorrow in Your care.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen

Golden oldie . . .

When upon life’s billows you are tempest tossed,
When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,
Count your many blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.

Count your blessings, name them one by one;
Count your blessings, see what God hath done;
Count your blessings, name them one by one;
Count your many blessings, see what God hath done.

Are you ever burdened with a load of care?
Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear?
Count your many blessings, ev’ry doubt will fly,
And you will be singing as the days go by.

When you look at others with their lands and gold,
Think that Christ has promised you His wealth untold;
Count your many blessings, money cannot buy
Your reward in heaven, nor your home on high.

So, amid the conflict, whether great or small,
Do not be discouraged, God is over all;
Count your many blessings, angels will attend,
Help and comfort give you to your journey’s end.

“Judah, your brothers will praise you. You will grasp your enemies by the neck. All your relatives will bow before you. Judah, my son, is a young lion that has finished eating its prey. Like a lion he crouches and lies down; like a lioness – who dares to rouse him? 10 The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from his descendants, until the coming of the one to whom it belongs, the one whom all nations will honor. 11 He ties his foal to a grapevine, the colt of his donkey to a choice vine. He washes his clothes in wine, his robes in the blood of grapes. 12 His eyes are darker than wine, and his teeth are whiter than milk.”
Genesis 49:8-12 New Lining Translation

God our promise keeper,

How we are blessed, encouraged and assured when we see the future in the past come true to Your word. Judah the family You placed Jesus into through Joseph, husband of Mary, who adopted him as his own firstborn. The royal sceptre passed down through Jacobs line to the King of Kings. It can never be taken away not even by death itself.

There as we travel through the Old Testament we see the picture of the King riding on a donkey the foal of a donkey as Jesus enters Jerusalem (Mark 11:7-10). The donkey symbolised – coming in peace and not war. Jesus came in peace and yet we killed Him. But he also came to war against our enemies of sin and death. I cannot watch gruesome war films but love the happy ever after endings. Lord it is hard to travel through the crucifixion but it is the only way we can truly know what it cost You. Keep us as it were journeying with You but always at the cross!

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Had to be this hymn which has stood the test of time. Says it all.

Jesus, keep me near the cross,
There a precious fountain;
Free to all, a healing stream,
Flows from Calv’ry’s mountain.

In the cross, in the cross
Be my glory ever,
Till my ransomed soul shall find
Rest beyond the river.

Near the cross, a trembling soul,
Love and mercy found me;
There the Bright and Morning Star
Shed His beams around me.

Near the cross! O lamb of God,
Bring its scenes before me;
Help me walk from day to day
With its shadow o’er me.

Near the cross! I’ll watch and wait,
Hoping, trusting ever;
Till I reach the golden strand,
Just beyond the river.
