“Then King David went in and sat before the Lord; and he said: “Who am I, O Lord God? And what is my house, that You have brought me this far? 19 And yet this was a small thing in Your sight, O Lord God; and You have also spoken of Your servant’s house for a great while to come. Is this the manner of man, O Lord God? 20 Now what more can David say to You? For You, Lord God, know Your servant. 21 For Your word’s sake, and according to Your own heart, You have done all these great things, to make Your servant know them. 22 Therefore You are great, O Lord God. For there is none like You, nor is there any God besides You, according to all that we have heard with our ears. 23 And who is like Your people, like Israel, the one nation on the earth whom God went to redeem for Himself as a people, to make for Himself a name—and to do for Yourself great and awesome deeds for Your land—before Your people whom You redeemed for Yourself from Egypt, the nations, and their gods? 24 For You have made Your people Israel Your very own people forever; and You, Lord, have become their God.” 2 Samuel 7:18-28 NKJV

Lord God,

This King who had established himself in Jerusalem wanted to establish his Kingdom with showing his honour, praise and worship for You his God. Building somewhere fabulous to house the Ark, the symbol of Your presence. And You said no. And You told Nathan and David how You would do it through his son Solomon. David was used to being a leader in battle and in peace and yet he humbly submits to Your will. No answering back, no trying to persuade, no whining.

It doesn’t always go our way, my way. You do not always let us have our own way and for good reason.. And sometimes when things don’t work out I have been known to have a pity party. No one else invited. Yet here David sees the outcome of no is still good. He may not be the doer or even see it done in his lifetime, but he responds with gratitude, praise and worship. He looks back as far and as long ago as Egypt and assesses all You have done and trusts You for all that’s to come.. We do that too Lord. We can look back assess all You have done since David, since Jesus and we can trust You for what’s to come.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

This is what I call an unhurried hymn. Using familiar words but bringing them afresh. I still like the original tune too.

Blessed Assurance, Jesus is mine
He’s been my fourth man in the fire, time after time
Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood
And what He did for me on Calvary is more than enough

I trust in God, my Savior
The one who will never fail
He will never fail
I trust in God, my Savior
The one who will never fail
He will never fail

Perfect submission, all is at rest
I know the author of tomorrow has ordered my steps
So this is my story and this is my song
I’m praising my risen King and Savior all the day long

Chorus

I sought the Lord and He heard and He answered
I sought the Lord and He heard and He answered
I sought the Lord and He heard and He answered
That’s why I trust Him, that’s why I trust Him
Repeat . . .

That’s why I trust in, that’s why I trust in God

Chorus

“Now it came to pass when the king was dwelling in his house, and the Lord had given him rest from all his enemies all around, 2 that the king said to Nathan the prophet, “See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells inside tent curtains.” 3 Then Nathan said to the king, “Go, do all that is in your heart, for the Lord is with you.” 4 But it happened that night that the word of the Lord came to Nathan, saying, 5 “Go and tell My servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord: “Would you build a house for Me to dwell in? 6 For I have not dwelt in a house since the time that I brought the children of Israel up from Egypt, even to this day, but have moved about in a tent and in a tabernacle.” 2 Samuel 7:1-6 NKJV

“”When your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. 14 I will be his Father, and he shall be My son. If he commits iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men and with the blows of the sons of men. 15 But My mercy shall not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I removed from before you. 16 And your house and your kingdom shall be established forever before you. Your throne shall be established forever.” ’ ” 2 Samuel 7:12-16 NKJV

Father God,

Sometimes we neglect to see what is in front of our eyes everyday. Yet King David sees clearly that now he has built his own house he has neglected where the ark is housed. Lie many coming after him he wanted to build somewhere for the Ark that was worthy of You His faithful, powerful and righteous God.

But You said no. “You have shed much blood and fought great battles; you shall not build a House for My name” (1 Chronicles 22:8). Even though he was not always the aggressor. I wonder how disappointed he was? But then he received Your promise of something much more important than a building – a promise of a house, a dynasty, that would continue and be established forever.

We have incredible buildings, built from good desires and proud desires . . . but we know Father they are just walls. It is Your family in Jesus, the church, that You value. Valued above the life of Your Son. Valued enough to have planned that through David’s line a Saviour would be born. Its an amazing history.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

“So he left Asaph and his brothers there before the ark of the covenant of the Lord to minister before the ark regularly, as every day’s work required; 38 and Obed-Edom with his sixty-eight brethren, including Obed-Edom the son of Jeduthun, and Hosah, to be gatekeepers; 39 and Zadok the priest and his brethren the priests, before the tabernacle of the Lord at the high place that was at Gibeon, 40 to offer burnt offerings to the Lord on the altar of burnt offering regularly morning and evening, and to do according to all that is written in the Law of the Lord which He commanded Israel; 41 and with them Heman and Jeduthun and the rest who were chosen, who were designated by name, to give thanks to the Lord, because His mercy endures forever; 42 and with them Heman and Jeduthun, to sound aloud with trumpets and cymbals and the musical instruments of God. Now the sons of Jeduthun were gatekeepers.” 1 Chronicles 16:37-42 NKJV

“On that day David first delivered this psalm into the hand of Asaph and his brethren, to thank the Lord: 8 Oh, give thanks to the Lord! Call upon His name; Make known His deeds among the peoples! 9 Sing to Him, sing psalms to Him; Talk of all His wondrous works! 10 Glory in His holy name; Let the hearts of those rejoice who seek the Lord! 11 Seek the Lord and His strength;
Seek His face evermore! . . . ” 1 Chronicles 16:7-11 and Psalm 105:1-4 NKJV

Father God,

David had left the ark in the house of Obed-Edom when Uzziah died., because as a levite he should know how to honour and keep it in a right manner. And he and his family did and were greatly blessed by You Father (2 Samuel 6:11). It is no surprise then that he wants to remain close to the Ark and serve You. With all his relatives who have experienced Your blessing. David says in his Psalm they and we must tell everyone how great You are God.

When I had experienced God for the first time there was no going back. I could not deny You. I wanted to know more about this amazing loving God, more about Jesus. I wanted everyone to know. I wanted my family to know about You too. And some of them believed. Sadly some not.

But no-one who has a real encounter with You can be the same. Whether they want to know You or turn away. Help us to bridge the gap between knowing about and knowing You for those around us. Give us opportunity not to preach so much as chat and love the gospel into them. It is the most beautiful experience to see someone discover the blessings that come from You. Our name may not be in the Bible, like Obed-Edom, but it is in the book of life (Revelation 20:12-15). Father sobering yet very reassuring.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Its more than worship it is Jesus words commissioning us . . . .

See my hands and look at my feet
It’s okay if it’s hard to believe
I have faith you will do greater things
It’s my time to go but before I leave

Go tell the world about me
I was dead but now I live
I’ve gotta go now for a little while
But goodbye is not the end

Don’t forget the things that I taught you
I’ve conquered death and I hold the keys
Where I go you will go too, someday
But there’s much to do here before you leave so . . .

Go tell the world about me
I was dead but now I live
I’ve gotta go now for a little while
But goodbye is not the end

End of the journey, the end of the road
My spirit is with you wherever you go
You have a purpose and I have a plan
I’ll make you this promise
I’ll come back again but until then

Go tell the world about me
I was dead but now I live
I’ve gotta go now for a little while
But goodbye is not the end
