“And it came to pass in those days, when there was no king in Israel, that there was a certain Levite staying in the remote mountains of Ephraim. He took for himself a concubine from Bethlehem in Judah. 2 But his concubine played the harlot against him, and went away from him to her father’s house at Bethlehem in Judah, and was there four whole months. 3 Then her husband arose and went after her, to speak kindly to her and bring her back, having his servant and a couple of donkeys with him.” Judges 19:1-3 NKJV

“Then he arose early in the morning on the fifth day to depart, but the young woman’s father said, “Please refresh your heart.” So they delayed until afternoon; and both of them ate.” Judges 19:8 NKJV

“Just then an old man came in from his work in the field at evening, who also was from the mountains of Ephraim; he was staying in Gibeah, whereas the men of the place were Benjamites. 17 And when he raised his eyes, he saw the traveler in the open square of the city; and the old man said, “Where are you going, and where do you come from?” 18 So he said to him, “We are passing from Bethlehem in Judah toward the remote mountains of Ephraim; I am from there. I went to Bethlehem in Judah; now I am going to the house of the Lord. But there is no one who will take me into his house, 19 although we have both straw and fodder for our donkeys, and bread and wine for myself, for your female servant, and for the young man who is with your servant; there is no lack of anything.” 20 And the old man said, “Peace be with you! However, let all your needs be my responsibility; only do not spend the night in the open square.” Judges 19:16-20 NKJV

Lord God,

We come near to the end of Judges and read about the state of the Israelites, constantly needing judges and saviours (300 to 400 years?). And we see how far from the Law of Moses they have moved. But we notice that it is not all bad. Here is a Levite travelling to kindly restore his family to himself. And an old man, living and working away from his tribe, immediately obeying the law of Moses on hospitality. He was a good man. At the end of Judges the tribes are not united as a nation. and end up fighting and killing each other. No attempt to recompense or peace make. But there is that one good old man.

How sad. But I remember how, when Abraham spoke up for Sodom, he said, ‘what if only 10 righteous are there?’ And You promised to save it if only 10. There was not 10, so Sodom was burned, but You God saved Lot and his daughters (Genesis 19). You are always looking for those You can save.

You stayed faithful. Was it because of one good man who loved his neighbour, Your promises to Abraham, Isaac and Moses? Even a good man sins (Romans 3:23). But God, You demonstrated Your own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” )Romans 5:8) We may despair sometimes at the evil in this world just as the Levite and the old man must have in theirs. But You were faithful to them and now we have one good Saviour, Jesus.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen

Worship Saturday 21st March 2026

I know not why God’s wondrous grace
To me He hath made known,
Nor why, unworthy, Christ in love
Redeemed me for His own.

But “I know Whom I have believed,
And am persuaded that He is able
To keep that which I’ve committed
Unto Him against that day.”

I know not how this saving faith
To me He did impart,
Nor how believing in His Word
Wrought peace within my heart.

Chorus

I know not how the Spirit moves,
Convincing men of sin,
Revealing Jesus through the Word,
Creating faith in Him.

Chorus

I know not when my Lord may come,
At night or noonday fair,
Nor if I walk the vale with Him,
Or meet Him in the air.

Chorus twice.

” Again the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and the Lord delivered them into the hand of the Philistines for forty years. 2 Now there was a certain man from Zorah, of the family of the Danites, whose name was Manoah; and his wife was barren and had no children. 3 And the Angel of the Lord appeared to the woman and said to her, “Indeed now, you are barren and have borne no children, but you shall conceive and bear a son. 4 Now therefore, please be careful not to drink wine or similar drink, and not to eat anything unclean. 5 For behold, you shall conceive and bear a son. And no razor shall come upon his head, for the child shall be a Nazirite to God from the womb; and he shall begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines.”” Judges 13:1-5 NKJV

Father God,

Samson is one of the best-known Judges. But perhaps for all the wrong reasons. He does not practice good leadership, he shows no respect for family, the vows made at his birth, God’s calling, any of the women he met, or his friends. He shows no compassion or interest in anyone else. As a judge, Samson never cared for the common good or the welfare and spiritual life of his nation. He does not really acknowledge his power is from You God. His prayers were selfish; even at the end, he asks for Your help God primarily to get revenge.

Yet You gave Him the power to deliver Israel from the power of the Philistines. You kept Your promise even though Samson had no intention of developing a godly character. He kills 3000 men after his wife tricks him into telling her the answer to the sweetness in strength riddle. Delilah a harlot we are told, is hired to find the source of hs strength. He enjoys the game till his vanity gets the better of him and he tells her. Yet we read he judged Israel for 20 years (Judges 15:20) and the writer to the Hebrews names him among the faithful in Hebrews 11:32-33. We do not always see what You see.

We learn about potential not realised, relationships not wholesome and yet Your faithfulness in all situations. Help us to look and find You in all our situations, even in our mess of a world. When we don’t understand, that You are still working out Your purposes, in spite of man’s character.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Worship Friday 20th March 2026

God is working this purpose out,
as year succeeds to year;
God is working this purpose out,
and the time is drawing near;
nearer and nearer draws the time,
the time that shall surely be:
when the earth shall be filled with the glory of God
as the waters cover the sea. (Habakkuk 2:14)

From utmost east to utmost west,
where human feet have trod,
by the mouth of many messengers
goes forth the voice of God:
“Give ear to me, ye continents,
ye isles, give ear to me,
that the earth may be filled with the glory of God
as the waters cover the sea.”

Omitted Verse
Let us go forth in the strength of God,
with the banner of Christ unfurled,
that the light of the glorious gospel of truth
may shine throughout the world.
Let us all fight with sorrow and sin
to set the captives free,
that the earth may be filled with the glory of God
as the waters cover the sea.

All we can do is nothing worth
unless God blesses the deed.
Vainly we hope for the harvest-tide
till God gives life to the seed.
Yet nearer and nearer draws the time,
the time that shall surely be,
when the earth shall be filled with the glory of God
as the waters cover the sea.

” And Jephthah judged Israel six years. Then Jephthah the Gileadite died and was buried among the cities of Gilead. 8 After him, Ibzan of Bethlehem judged Israel. 9 He had thirty sons. And he gave away thirty daughters in marriage, and brought in thirty daughters from elsewhere for his sons. He judged Israel seven years. 10 Then Ibzan died and was buried at Bethlehem. 11 After him, Elon the Zebulunite judged Israel. He judged Israel ten years. 12 And Elon the Zebulunite died and was buried at Aijalon in the country of Zebulun. 13 After him, Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite judged Israel. 14 He had forty sons and thirty grandsons, who rode on seventy young donkeys. He judged Israel eight years. 15 Then Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite died and was buried in Pirathon in the land of Ephraim, in the mountains of the Amalekites.” Judges 12:7-15 NKJV

God of every generation,

Following Jephthah’s 7 years of terrible foreign and civil wars, and troubled private life, came Ibzan who judged for 7 years. A totally different reign. He was considered a minor judge because his entire career is described in three brief verses. They contain no battles, theological confrontations, or other events. I am not even sure which tribe he was from. It seems he made many alliances by his sons marriages. And he did OK.

Then came another minor judge, Elon. Again all quiet with him for 10 years. Abdon followed on for 8 years with his large family pictured on donkeys as peaceful, humble people.

3 minor judges and twenty five uneventful years with uneventful recordings of their leadership and judgements. It makes me remember all Your servants who have served Jesus with no record of their deeds or lives remembered even by the church. Whether for a short or a long time. But they did not long for fame or fortune but simply to serve and please You.

Jesus told the story of the faithful servants who used their talents and received their ‘well done though good and faithful servant’ from the Master when He returned (Matthew 25:23). May we be found faithful and not worry about fame in Your Kingdom Lord. You know and it is enough.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Worship Thursday 19th March 2026
I must confess I do not always feel enthusiastic like this worship . . . but under my emotions is the desire Lord.

I want to be Your hands
And be Your feet
Lord, make me Your servant
I want to tell Your love
To everyone I meet
Lord make me Your servant

[Bridge]
And when You call me servant
You really call me friend
Your love has made me love You
And want to serve You
Make me the one You send
