“And Elisha returned to Gilgal, and there was a famine in the land. Now the sons of the prophets were sitting before him; and he said to his servant, “Put on the large pot, and boil stew for the sons of the prophets.” 39 So one went out into the field to gather herbs, and found a wild vine, and gathered from it a lapful of wild gourds, and came and sliced them into the pot of stew, though they did not know what they were. 40 Then they served it to the men to eat. Now it happened, as they were eating the stew, that they cried out and said, “Man of God, there is death in the pot!” And they could not eat it. 41 So he said, “Then bring some flour.” And he put it into the pot, and said, “Serve it to the people, that they may eat.” And there was nothing harmful in the pot.” 2 Kings 4:38-41 NKJV

“Then a man came from Baal Shalisha, and brought the man of God bread of the firstfruits, twenty loaves of barley bread, and newly ripened grain in his knapsack. And he said, “Give it to the people, that they may eat.” 43 But his servant said, “What? Shall I set this before one hundred men?” He said again, “Give it to the people, that they may eat; for thus says the Lord: ‘They shall eat and have some left over.’ ” 44 So he set it before them; and they ate and had some left over, according to the word of the Lord.” 2 Kings 4:42-44 NKJV

“Then Naaman went with his horses and chariot, and he stood at the door of Elisha’s house. 0 And Elisha sent a messenger to him, saying, “Go and wash in the Jordan seven times, and your flesh shall be restored to you, and you shall be clean.”” 2 Kings 5:9-10 NKJV

God of Elisha,

It is truly important to those who wrote the history that the prophets are given respect and their deeds recorded. They are the witness of You Lord God working amidst Your people regardless of their apostasy and idolatry. Here we see Elisha obeying You and seeing miracles. He is showing us Your character. The God who wants to keep us from poison, wants to feed us and wants to heal us. Leprosy was often thought to be a judgement on a person.

He gave us a glimpse into the future. To one who would be prophet, priest and King. To be the one who was a walking miracle, able to do them Himself. So we would know know Him for who he was. Jesus who removed evil spirits (Matthew 4:24) who fed the 5,000 (Matthew 14:13-21) and healed the sick and all who came to Him (Luke 4:40). Elisha served You but Jesus was Emmanuel, You God with us.

Time and again You showed Your people that You were a good God, a God for them, with them. But they did not listen to Your prophets unless they were passed desperate. Today many do not want to know about Jesus, but in crisis call upon Your name. Your grace and mercy is still there. Just as You were still there for Judah and Israel in their sin. Just as You are always here for me. Keep me from sins mess.

 “A certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets cried out to Elisha, saying, “Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that your servant feared the Lord. And the creditor is coming to take my two sons to be his slaves.” 2 So Elisha said to her, “What shall I do for you? Tell me, what do you have in the house?” And she said, “Your maidservant has nothing in the house but a jar of oil.” 3 Then he said, “Go, borrow vessels from everywhere, from all your neighbours—empty vessels; do not gather just a few. 4 And when you have come in, you shall shut the door behind you and your sons; then pour it into all those vessels, and set aside the full ones.” 5 So she went from him and shut the door behind her and her sons, who brought the vessels to her; and she poured it out. 6 Now it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said to her son, “Bring me another vessel.” And he said to her, “There is not another vessel.” So the oil ceased. 7 Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, “Go, sell the oil and pay your debt; and you and your sons live on the rest.”” 2 Kings 4:1-7 NKJV

Gracious God,

Here is a widow who has been left in debt by her husband. And she still speaks well of him as a servant who feared the Lord. It could have been a genuine reason for debt. But Elisha hears from You a way for her to pay off her debts, by her own doing, with miraculous help. He did not just give her the money. God, You took on her debt not Elisha. Elisha could not take any of the glory.

And she now could pay her debt and her and her son could begin to make a new life for themselves and earn their own living with no threat of slavery.

How can this story not remind us that You took on our debt of sin and paid the price. It was the greatest miracle of all. That freed us from slavery to sin and death to freedom in Christ and life eternal (Romans 6:22-23). And nothing we could do to pay it. A miracle of today. Can we still expect miracles? If it is the same spirit that raised Christ for the dead that lives in us (Romans 8:11) surely we may expect mercies. If we seek and wait on You, God. Grant us faith.

Just needed a sound traditional hymn to praise God for my, our, own amazing miracle.

Monday 1st June 2026

“Then Elijah said to him (Elisha), “Stay here, please, for the Lord has sent me on to the Jordan.” But he said, “As the Lord lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you!” So the two of them went on. 7 And fifty men of the sons of the prophets went and stood facing them at a distance, while the two of them stood by the Jordan. 8 Now Elijah took his mantle, rolled it up, and struck the water; and it was divided this way and that, so that the two of them crossed over on dry ground. 9 And so it was, when they had crossed over, that Elijah said to Elisha, “Ask! What may I do for you, before I am taken away from you?” Elisha said, “Please let a double portion of your spirit be upon me.” 10 So he said, “You have asked a hard thing. Nevertheless, if you see me when I am taken from you, it shall be so for you; but if not, it shall not be so.” 11 Then it happened, as they continued on and talked, that suddenly a chariot of fire appeared with horses of fire, and separated the two of them; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. 12 And Elisha saw it, and he cried out, “My father, my father, the chariot of Israel and its horsemen!” So he saw him no more. And he took hold of his own clothes and tore them into two pieces. 13 He also took up the mantle of Elijah that had fallen from him, and went back and stood by the bank of the Jordan. 14 Then he took the mantle of Elijah that had fallen from him, and struck the water, and said, “Where is the Lord God of Elijah?” And when he also had struck the water, it was divided this way and that; and Elisha crossed over.” 2 Kings 2:6-14 NKJV

Omnipotent God,

You answered the prayer of Elisha. It reminds me of when Elijah found Elisha ploughing with oxen and threw his mantle over him and called him his successor (1 Kings 19:19). Humble beginnings. Elijah, a farmer, perhaps never felt quite worthy, not having been brought up as a prophet or serving you. Perhaps he did not feel good enough or with any abilities. But he was brave and asked for Your anointing, the anointing Elijah had. Not for personal gain, we see his life spent in Your service. You enabled Elisha to see Elijah leave and become a mighty man of God, Your man.

Peter recognises that Simon desired the Holy Spirit for his own gain and challenged him to repent (Acts8:18-22). Paul warns against those who want to profit from preaching (1 Timothy 6:3-5) but believers preachers should be supported so they can serve God (2 Timothy 5:17-18). Paul himself was grateful for those who provided for him but he never took advantage (Philippians 4:14).

Sometimes I wonder that You could ever use me but then I remember You are God and generous and kind and allow me to help You! I may never see fiery chariots or part a river but I desire to serve joyfully and with an expectation of the miraculous. May we too be mighty men and women of God, for You in our own way with Your miraculous power.
