” This message concerning Nineveh came as a vision to Nahum, who lived in Elkosh. The Lord is a jealous God, filled with vengeance and rage. He takes revenge on all who oppose him and continues to rage against his enemies! The Lord is slow to get angry, but his power is great, and he never lets the guilty go unpunished. He displays his power in the whirlwind and the storm. The billowing clouds are the dust beneath his feet. At his command the oceans dry up, and the rivers disappear. The lush pastures of Bashan and Carmel fade, and the green forests of Lebanon wither. In his presence the mountains quake, and the hills melt away; the earth trembles, and its people are destroyed. Who can stand before his fierce anger? Who can survive his burning fury? His rage blazes forth like fire, and the mountains crumble to dust in his presence.

The Lord is good, a strong refuge when trouble comes. He is close to those who trust in him. But he will sweep away his enemies in an overwhelming flood. He will pursue his foes into the darkness of night.” Nahum 1:1-7

God of all the Earth,

Nahum is speaking Your message to the people of Nineveh (Capital of Assyria) where the rulers lived. The same place Jonah had been called to, and I can understand why he did not want to go to the heart of his enemies. They may have responded to Jonah’ s words but they had returned to their old ways. Nahum reminded them that You, Lord are still God even if they no longer acknowledge You!

Even if nothing seems to be stopping the Assyrians from invading Judah, You God are a God of justice. But slow to anger, you do not always respond immediately. And I am grateful that You have been slow to anger with me and taught me with great grace. You give another warning and opportunity for the Assyrians to put their house in order. You witness that You are a righteous God.

Nahum gives the benefits of choosing You as God. The God of refuge who will in the future sweep away enemies like a flood. A threat or a promise. It is time for them to choose which side they are on.They may appear to be on the winning side now but they will have to face You, the only true God one day. In some ways I am glad those who love sin and evil will be dealt with but then I am sad for those people who think they are good enough and have no need of You. It is their choice.

But over and above all I am grateful that I know You my Lord and Saviour and Your love. What would I do without You.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Worship Monday 11th August 2025.

In heavenly armour we’ll enter the land
The battle belongs to the Lord
No weapon that’s fashioned against us shall stand
The battle belongs to the Lord

We sing glory, honour
Power and strength to the Lord
We sing glory, honour
Power and strength to the Lord

When the power of darkness comes in like a flood
The battle belongs to the Lord
He’s raised up a standard, the power of His blood
The battle belongs to the Lord

We sing glory, honour
Power and strength to the lord
We sing glory, honour
Power and strength to the lord

When your enemy presses in hard do not fear
The battle belongs to the Lord
Take courage my friend, your redemption is near
The battle belongs to the Lord

And we sing glory, honour
Power and strength to the lord
We sing glory, honour
Power and strength to the lord

“Then the king called together all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem. He went up to the temple of the Lord with the people of Judah, the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the priests and the prophets—all the people from the least to the greatest. He read in their hearing all the words of the Book of the Covenant, which had been found in the temple of the Lord. The king stood by the pillar and renewed the covenant in the presence of the Lord—to follow the Lord and keep his commands, statutes and decrees with all his heart and all his soul, thus confirming the words of the covenant written in this book. Then all the people pledged themselves to the covenant. The king ordered Hilkiah the high priest, the priests next in rank and the doorkeepers to remove from the temple of the Lord all the articles made for Baal and Asherah and all the starry hosts. He burned them outside Jerusalem in the fields of the Kidron Valley and took the ashes to Bethel. He did away with the idolatrous priests appointed by the kings of Judah to burn incense on the high places of the towns of Judah and on those around Jerusalem—those who burned incense to Baal, to the sun and moon, to the constellations and to all the starry hosts . . . ”
2 Kings 23:1-5 NIV

Lord God,

The Book of the Covenant was found and Josiah determined to correct what was wrong. In worship and in behaviour. And reading the chapter it is clear to see how much was wrong. However taking away religious practices does not change someone’s inner faith and belief. we read that the people pledged themselves to the covenant but I wonder how much was to keep peace with the king and his army?

Josiah restored the Passover with all its symbolism and worship to You, Yahweh. It would instantly remind them of their history when their forefathers were slaves in Egypt. Every part of passover is symbolic of Your leading God, taking them from slavery to the promised land. And not being harmed by the plagues. The way You, God protecting them from death with the blood of the lamb smeared on their doorposts. While all the firstborn of their enemies died.

We too celebrate our freedom from slavery to sin each Sunday as we worship. Many using the symbols of bread and wine. Remembering the death of Your first born and only Son who died to set us free. Help us not to just go through the routine of rituals but come afresh in thanksgiving lest we become complacent and slip.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

During the reign of King Josiah, the Lord said to me, “Have you seen what faithless Israel has done? She has gone up on every high hill and under every spreading tree and has committed adultery there. I thought that after she had done all this she would return to me but she did not, and her unfaithful sister Judah saw it. I gave faithless Israel her certificate of divorce and sent her away because of all her adulteries. Yet I saw that her unfaithful sister Judah had no fear; she also went out and committed adultery. Because Israel’s immorality mattered so little to her, she defiled the land and committed adultery with stone and wood. 10 In spite of all this, her unfaithful sister Judah did not return to me with all her heart, but only in pretense,” declares the Lord.” Jeremiah 3:6-10 NIV

Father God of Israel and Judah,

Jeremiah spoke to Jerusalem and Judah just as the Lord told him to and he did not mellow the message. God even compares the two Kingdoms to two bad sisters who had rebelled. To Israel he gave what would seen to be the worst judgement. He divorced her. But then he says Judah in spite of this warning has continued to behaved just the same. Or was it worse to You? She pretended to return to You, God with all her heart.

It is hard work pretending to be what you are not. More than often it is the eyes that give it away. Smiles that don’t reach the eyes, Avoidance when not speaking the truth. Jesus said as much. He said the eyes are the lamp of the body and if the eyes are healthy, the whole body will be full of light. But if the eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness (Matthew 6:22,23).

There was no pretense in Jesus life and no darkness. Just pure light and eternal life. Help us be honest with ourselves and You so our eyes are clear and full of light. That we may be known as honest and open and trustworthy. And at peace with ourselves, and You, God warts and all as they say.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Worship Saturday 9th August 2025

God of grace I turn my face to You, I cannot hide
My nakedness, my shame, my guilt, are all before Your eyes
Striving and all anguished dreams in rags lie at my feet
And only grace provides the way for me to stand complete

And Your grace clothes me in righteousness
And Your mercy covers me in love
Your life adorns and beautifies
I stand complete in You
