“In the eighteenth year of King Jeroboam the son of Nebat, Abijam became king over Judah. He reigned three years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Maachah the granddaughter of Abishalom. And he walked in all the sins of his father, which he had done before him; his heart was not loyal to the Lord his God, as was the heart of his father David. Nevertheless for David’s sake the Lord his God gave him a lamp in Jerusalem, by setting up his son after him and by establishing Jerusalem; because David did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, and had not turned aside from anything that He commanded him all the days of his life, except in the matter of Uriah the Hittite. And there was war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam all the days of his life. Now the rest of the acts of Abijam, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah? And there was war between Abijam and Jeroboam.”
1 Kings 15:1-7 NKJV

God of eternity,

“Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” Paul tells the Corinthians (2 Corinthians 3:17). And another 3:17 this time from James’s letter says, “Wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy.”

There was war between Jeroboam and Rehoboam throughout their reign. Abijam walked in the sins of his father and it continued. You were still with them but unable to grant Your peace as they did not look to You for wisdom, peace or reconciliation. They just saw threat, vulnerability and the jealous desire for power.

Father we cannot always make peace. Sometimes there is no coming back from hurt or damage. But we can forgive and give over the judgement to You. We can receive Your peace. We may never trust again but we don’t have to eternally dwell on the situation. With Your wisdom we can see when we have offended and humble and apologise. Constantly living in peace where possible because You are in our midst. Refusing to continue a war by loving our enemies (Matthew 5:44). And above all we remember our sin it is cast in the deepest sea . . .(Micah 7:19) because of Jesus. Making sure we have no jealousy or desire for power.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Worship Saturday 23rd May 2026
Oh His mercy is more . . .

Praise the Lord, His mercy is more
Stronger than darkness, new every morn
Our sins they are many, His mercy is more

What love could remember no wrongs we have done
Omniscient, all knowing, He counts not their sum
Thrown into a sea without bottom or shore
Our sins they are many, His mercy is more

What patience would wait as we constantly roam
What Father, so tender, is calling us home
He welcomes the weakest, the vilest, the poor
Our sins they are many, His mercy is more

Praise the Lord, His mercy is more
Stronger than darkness, new every morn
Our sins they are many, His mercy is more

Repeat chorus

What riches of kindness He lavished on us
His blood was the payment, His life was the cost
We stood ‘neath a debt we could never afford
Our sins they are many, His mercy is more

Chorus
Repeat chorus . . .

Our sins they are many, His mercy is mоre

“Rehoboam was forty-one years old when he became king. He reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city which the Lord had chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, to put His name there. His mother’s name was Naamah, an Ammonitess. 22 Now Judah did evil in the sight of the Lord, and they provoked Him to jealousy with their sins which they committed, more than all that their fathers had done. 23 For they also built for themselves high places, sacred pillars, and wooden images on every high hill and under every green tree. 24 And there were also perverted persons in the land. They did according to all the abominations of the nations which the Lord had cast out before the children of Israel.” 1 Kings 14:21-24

“Then King Rehoboam made bronze shields in their place, and committed them to the hands of the captains of the guard, who guarded the doorway of the king’s house. 28 And whenever the king entered the house of the Lord, the guards carried them, then brought them back into the guardroom.” 1 Kings 14:27-28 NKJV

Lord God Almighty,

Even with the Temple and the history of Your people and Jerusalem, Rehoboam did not attempt to lead according to tradition, Your commands God or good judgement. Though we read later after Shishak king of Egypt came against Jerusalem and took away the treasures of the Lord’s house, the king’s house and everything, Rehoboam does go into the Temple. Too little too late?

But he made no attempt to remove or deal with  the idolatrous high places, sacred pillars, and wooden images on every high hill and under every green tree. And the perverted persons. Society was in free fall. Father we see it getting worse and yet we know how their history goes and Your unending faithfulness. Eventually, at the right time, You send deliverance and it will to cover Your people and all nations.

David’s line does continue even through sin and judgement. You hold firm to Your answer to sin, in Jesus Your Son. While we plough through the book of Kings and Chronicles, we could despair, if we did not know all this history is leading to the promise of redemption (John 3:16) and finally to a new earth and a new heaven and glorious joy! (Revelation 7:9,10).

In Jesus name we pry, Amen.

A quote from vertical worship is below the lyrics.

I am holding on to faith
‘Cause I know You’ll make a way
I don’t always understand, I don’t always get to see
But I will believe it, Yes I will believe it

[Chorus]
You make mountains move
You make giants fall
You use songs of praise
To shake prison walls
I will speak to my fear, I will preach to my doubt
You were faithful then, You’ll be faithful now

I am standing on Your word
Calling heaven down to earth
You will fight enemies this will end in victory
I will believe it, Yes I will believe it

Chorus

I know that I know, You never fail
I know that I know, You never will
I know that I know, You never fail
I know that I know. You never will

Chorus twice

Lyrics: Mia Fieldes, Jonathan Smith, Hank Bentley, and Eddie Hoagland (2020)

A band member of vertical worship, said about this song: “It is a song that not just speaks to the faithfulness of God but the story of His faithfulness through thousands of years and how His promises and Word support that message. In whatever situation or season you find yourself in, a temporary remedy will only temporarily satisfy or heal—but the fulfilled promises, the never-changing Word, and the proven faithfulness of God are capable of holding us up and seeing us through anything.”

“And behold, a man of God went from Judah to Bethel by the word of the Lord, and Jeroboam stood by the altar to burn incense. Then he cried out against the altar by the word of the Lord, and said, “O altar, altar! Thus says the Lord: ‘Behold, a child, Josiah by name, shall be born to the house of David; and on you he shall sacrifice the priests of the high places who burn incense on you, and men’s bones shall be burned on you.’ ” And he gave a sign the same day, saying, “This is the sign which the Lord has spoken: Surely the altar shall split apart, and the ashes on it shall be poured out.” So it came to pass when King Jeroboam heard the saying of the man of God, who cried out against the altar in Bethel, that he stretched out his hand from the altar, saying, “Arrest him!” Then his hand, which he stretched out toward him, withered, so that he could not pull it back to himself. The altar also was split apart, and the ashes poured out from the altar, according to the sign which the man of God had given by the word of the Lord. Then the king answered and said to the man of God, “Please entreat the favor of the Lord your God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored to me.” So the man of God entreated the Lord, and the king’s hand was restored to him, and became as before.” 1 Kings 13:1-10 NKJV

El Roi, God who sees (Genesis 16:13),

Sometimes it may appear that You are overlooking sin or allowing it. But You are the God who sees. We cannot see the whole picture of past present and future and Your plans as You do. But in this passage we see that You are very aware of Jeroboams deceptive idolatrous altar. You sent one of Your men. We do not know his name only that he is willing, obedient and brave.

He calls out that the altar will be desecrated by God and he stood fast though in danger of arrest, possibly death? And You proved his words by splitting the alter in two. You showed judgement on Jeroboam and then Your great mercy on sinners by healing him.

In a world where we are surrounded by idolatry, this event reminds us that You do see and deal with leaders in Your time. You do not leave them without a witness, because You are a merciful God and Your judgement is true. We too may be unknown but sometimes one voice is all it takes to speak the truth where it will make a difference. And we are reminded that You raise up Your men to leadership places where they can speak and be heard. We need them in this day and age, Lord.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen..

All over the world the Spirit is moving
All over the world as the prophets said it would be
All over the world there’s a mighty revelation
Of the glory of the Lord
As the waters cover the sea

All over His church God’s Spirit is moving
All over His church as the prophets said it would be
All over His church there’s a mighty revelation
Of the glory of the Lord
As the waters cover the sea

Right here in this place the Spirit is moving
Right here in this place as the prophets said it would be
Right here in this place there’s a mighty revelation
Of the glory of the Lord
As the waters cover the sea
