“Then the Lord said to Moses, “Why are you crying out to me? Tell the people to get moving! 16Pick up your staff and raise your hand over the sea. Divide the water so the Israelites can walk through the middle of the sea on dry ground. 17 And I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians, and they will charge in after the Israelites. My great glory will be displayed through Pharaoh and his troops, his chariots, and his charioteers. 18 When my glory is displayed through them, all Egypt will see my glory and know that I am the Lord!”

19 Then the angel of God, who had been leading the people of Israel, moved to the rear of the camp. The pillar of cloud also moved from the front and stood behind them. 20 The cloud settled between the Egyptian and Israelite camps. As darkness fell, the cloud turned to fire, lighting up the night. But the Egyptians and Israelites did not approach each other all night.” Exodus 14:15-20 NLT

Lrd God, My Father,

A pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. In the front to guide and lead and in the rear to protect and separate form approaching evil. The times I would have liked to see physical evidence of your leading or protection of threatening trouble. But then we have You, Holy Spirit to bring us Your presence and comfort. They could not know You personally or even know Your nature as we do in Jesus. Jesus, the visible image of You, God (Colossians 1:15).

You have always sought to lead Your people, even when they did not want to listen! And never gave up on them even when they wandered and sinned. And then You sent the Good Shepherd, Jesus. You showed that You both lead us together as a body of believers (Ephesians 4:4) and as individuals with different callings and gifts (Romans 12:6-8)..

Today as it is Sunday and a day to worship we pray for our church and the church worldwide in all its shapes, colours, traditions and worship. Wherever Jesus is Lord. Lead Your church into the future, come what may, heal it and protect it from falling within and without. And take care of each individual sheep.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Worship Sunday 9th February 2025

The church’s one Foundation
is Jesus Christ her Lord;
she is His new creation,
by water and the Word;
from heav’n He came and sought her
to be His holy bride;
with His own blood He bought her,
and for her life He died.

Elect from ev’ry nation,
yet one o’er all the earth,
her charter of salvation,
one Lord, one faith, one birth;
one holy Name she blesses,
partakes one holy food,
and to one hope she presses,
with ev’ry grace endued.

Tho’ with a scornful wonder,
men see her sore oppressed,
by schisms rent asunder,
by heresies distressed,
yet saints their watch are keeping,
their cry goes up, “How long?”
And soon the night of weeping
shall be the morn of song.

‘Mid toil and tribulation,
and tumult of her war,
she waits the consummation
of peace for evermore;
till with the vision glorious
her longing eyes are blest,
and the great church victorious
shall be the church at rest.

Yet she on earth hath union
with God the Three in One,
and mystic sweet communion
with those whose rest is won.
O happy ones and holy!
Lord, give us grace that we,
like them, the meek and lowly,
on high may dwell with Thee.

Lyrics: Samuel John Stone

This hymn was written as a direct response to the schism within the Church of South Africa caused by John William Colenso, first Bishop of Natal. The bishop was deposed for his teachings, and appealed to the ecclesiastical authorities in England where Samuel Stone became involved in the debate. It inspired Samuel to write a set of hymns titled Lyra Fidelium; Twelve Hymns on the Twelve Articles of the Apostle’s Creed (1866).He alluded to the controversy in the third verse, “Though with a scornful wonder men see her sore oppressed, by schisms rent asunder, by heresies distressed . . . ” The church survived and grew . . .

“Moses took the bones of Joseph with him because Joseph had made the Israelites swear an oath. He had said, “God will surely come to your aid, and then you must carry my bones up with you from this place.” Exodus 13:19

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Tell the Israelites to turn back and encamp near Pi Hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea. They are to encamp by the sea, directly opposite Baal Zephon, Pharaoh will think, ‘The Israelites are wandering around the land in confusion, hemmed in by the desert.’ And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and he will pursue them. But I will gain glory for myself through Pharaoh and all his army, and the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord.” So the Israelites did this.” Exodus 14:1-4

Lord God,

Joseph knew You, God would take your people back to their own land – that’s why he assured them by asking them to take his bones with them. Not because he wanted to be buried there but that they would know it would happen! Joseph trusted You for the long run, Lord, grow our faith.

The Israelites must have been a little confused when they turned back to make camp. They could not see what You see Lord. Then they would have been terrified and worried all night about crossing the Red Sea with all their belongings and children. Deep or muddy shallow. We cannot always see what people are really feeling. We cannot know all that You, God are doing in peoples lives around us and what effect we are having on them. Jesus said we should be like a light on a stand, giving light to everyone all around (Matthew 5:15). Not just those we like . . . In other words letting our good deeds shine out for all to see. It is not always our business to know – in case it starts us thinking how good we are!

When it seems the enemy is getting close and those times we seem to be in a hard place, help us to see we may be close to a breakthrough. And You, God dealing with our enemies. Help us stand firm, stay faithful, and shine.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen

Worship Saturday 8th February 2025
I rediscovered this recently and only recognised it at the chorus. Fabulous lyrics and worship.

We’re pilgrims on the journey of the narrow road
And those who’ve gone before us line the way
Cheering on the faithful, encouraging the weary
Their lives, a stirring testament to God’s sustaining grace

Surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses
Let us run the race, not only for the prize
But as those who’ve gone before us
Let us leave to those behind us the heritage of faithfulness
Passed on through godly lives

Oh, may all who come behind us find us faithful
May the fire of our devotion light their way
May the footprints that we leave lead them to believe
And the lives we live inspire them to obey
Oh, may all who come behind us find us faithful

After all our hopes and dreams have come and gone
And our children sift through all we’ve left behind
May the clues that they discover and the memories they uncover
Become the light that leads them to the road we each must find

Oh, may all who come behind us find us faithful
May the fire of our devotion light their way
May the footprints that we leave lead them to believe
And the lives we live inspire them to obey

“The Egyptians urged the people to hurry and leave the country. “For otherwise,” they said, “we will all die!” 34 So the people took their dough before the yeast was added, and carried it on their shoulders in kneading troughs wrapped in clothing. 35 The Israelites did as Moses instructed and asked the Egyptians for articles of silver and gold and for clothing. 36 The Lord had made the Egyptians favorably disposed toward the people, and they gave them what they asked for; so they plundered the Egyptians.” Exodus 12:35,36 NIV

“When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them on the road through the Philistine country, though that was shorter. For God said, “If they face war, they might change their minds and return to Egypt.” 18 So God led the people around by the desert road toward the Red Sea. The Israelites went up out of Egypt ready for battle.” Exodus 13:17,18 NIV

Father God,

Change can be a challenge even when we know it has to come or we want it to come. To hit the road and live hand to mouth, not even having time to add yeast and make bread! And they left family homes where they had put down roots even if they had been worked hard. Places where loved ones had been born and died. That’s change alright! But the Lord blessed them and Egyptian neighbours provided them with wealth and clothes! How often You bless us amid difficulties with exactly what we will need. We don’t always see it at the time.

And as they went – following Moses. Those who knew the layout of the land from grazing the sheep and goats, may have wondered why they were going on a roundabout route. God knew what was ahead and knew sometimes detours are the best. Not really detours at all. And even though it says the Israelites went out ready for battle, God knew they were not. And the long way may have looked like a watery dead end but it was not to You, God. You made a way. Thank you that we can see You in our own lives. In the detours and making a way where none seems possible. We are learning to trust Your leading even when we do not see the sense of it!

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Worship Friday 7th February 2025.
Absolutely had to be this song.

God will make a way
Where there seems to be no way
He works in ways we cannot see
He will make a way for me
He will be my guide
Hold me closely to His side
With love and strength for each new day
He will make a way, He will make a way

Repeat Chorus

By a roadway in the wilderness, He’ll lead me
Rivers in the desert will I see
Heaven and earth will fade but His Word will still remain
And He will do something new today

Oh, God will make a way
Where there seems to be no way
He works in ways we cannot see
He will make a way for me
He will be my guide
Hold me closely to His side
With love and strength for each new day
He will make a way, He will make a way

With love and strength for each new day
He will make a way, He will make a way

Yes, he will, he will make a way for you
