“Many years later, when Moses had grown up, he went out to visit his own people, the Hebrews, and he saw how hard they were forced to work. During his visit, he saw an Egyptian beating one of his fellow Hebrews. 12 After looking in all directions to make sure no one was watching, Moses killed the Egyptian and hid the body in the sand. 13 The next day, when Moses went out to visit his people again, he saw two Hebrew men fighting. “Why are you beating up your friend?” Moses said to the one who had started the fight. 14 The man replied, “Who appointed you to be our prince and judge? Are you going to kill me as you killed that Egyptian yesterday?” Then Moses was afraid, thinking, “Everyone knows what I did.” 15 And sure enough, Pharaoh heard what had happened, and he tried to kill Moses. But Moses fled from Pharaoh and went to live in the land of Midian.” Exodus 2:11-15 NLT

God who sees all,

A life-changing day in the life of a confused young man. The son of a man of the tribe of Levi. Jacob in his dying blessings had said the descendants of Levi, “Simeon and Levi are brothers; Instruments of cruelty are in their dwelling place. Let not my soul enter their council; Let not my honor be united to their assembly; For in their anger they slew a man,” (Genesis 49:5,6).The apple had not fallen far from the tree as they say. But You see the man to be and his potential and though Moses ran he could not outrun You.

Not only did you turn his future around but the future of his whole tribe who became Your priests. The Bible is full of people we would not expect You to choose. Gideon threshing wheat, hidden in winepress, young, afraid and doubtful (Judges 6:11,15). Rahab a foreigner and a prostitute who helped Joshua spy out the land of Jericho (Joshua 2 and 6) and David the youngest son forgotten by his father, out looking after the sheep (1 Samuel 16:11). Esther an exile and orphan, a woman of no substance who ended up saving her people (Esther 2:5-8). Peter an impetuous fisherman who cut off a mans ear. (John 18:10). Paul who persecuted the church and watched Christians being stoned to death (Acts 8:1-3).

Oh thank You that You choose us, because You loved us first (1 John 4:19) and not for who we are or what we have done. Rather despite what we have done.. And You make us new (2 Corinthians 5:17) and give us fruit (Galatians 5:22,23) and gifts (Romans 12:6). And You hold us firm.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

The story of this hymn is below the lyrics.

Who am I, that the Lord of all the earth
Would care to know my name
Would care to feel my hurt
Who am I, that the Bright and Morning Star
Would choose to light the way
For my ever wandering heart

Not because of who I am
But because of what You’ve done
Not because of what I’ve done
But because of who You are

I am a flower quickly fading
Here today and gone tomorrow
A wave tossed in the ocean
Vapor in the wind
Still You hear me when I’m calling
Lord, You catch me when I’m falling
And You’ve told me who I am
I am Yours, I am Yours

Who am I, that the eyes that see my sin
Would look on me with love and watch me rise again
Who am I, that the voice that calmed the sea
Would call out through the rain
And calm the storm in me

Chorus . . .
Chorus . . .

Whom shall I fear
I am Yours

Lyrics: Mark Hall (Casting Crowns)

Mark Hall was diagnosed with learning disabilities as a child, including attention deficit disorder just before third grade. He also was diagnosed with dyslexia. Mark defines himself as “a broken person made whole”. The idea for “Who Am I” came while he was driving home with his wife and children one night. He was having a personal worship-time during the drive, and wondered “Who am I to think I can just call up to God whenever I want, from the middle of nowhere, and expect Him to hear me?” Immediately I started thinking I’m a new creation, I’m more than a conqueror… I’m also grass that rises up and is gone in a day”. In an interview, he commented that “me being a conqueror is true, but at the same time I need to understand that my life is a vapor, and me being able to even pray to God is because of what he’s done for me.”

“About this time, a man and woman from the tribe of Levi got married. The woman became pregnant and gave birth to a son . . .” “when she could no longer hide him, she got a basket made of papyrus reeds and waterproofed it with tar and pitch. She put the baby in the basket and laid it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile River . . . ” “ Soon Pharaoh’s daughter came down to bathe in the river, and her attendants walked along the riverbank. When the princess saw the basket among the reeds, she sent her maid to get it for her.  When the princess opened it, she saw the baby. The little boy was crying, and she felt sorry for him . . . .” “ Then the baby’s sister approached the princess. “Should I go and find one of the Hebrew women to nurse the baby for you?” she asked. “Yes, do! . . . ” So the girl went and called the baby’s mother. “Take this baby and nurse him for me, the princess told the baby’s mother . . .” “when the boy was older, his mother brought him back to Pharaoh’s daughter, who adopted him as her own son. The princess named him Moses . . . “I lifted him out of the water.”” Exodus 2:1-10 selected NLT

God of Abraham, Isaac and Moses,

So Moses got to be with his mother. Some scholars say until he was on solid food, some say till he was much older. You, Lord God used circumstances and inspired his sister to ensure Moses was where he should be. And he had a future against all odds, because Your hand was upon Him.

We cannot always see Your hand upon our lives – sometimes till much later and sometimes we can never understand this side of heaven. Nothing could stop Moses from having the love of his parents. Not the midwives who should have killed him. Not Pharaoh’s daughter who should have had him killed. Not Pharaoh who must have spotted hat he had the traits of an Israelites and not an Egyptian?

Thank You that we have been taken from death and given life (Romans 6:23) We too have a sibling, a brother, Jesus, who watched over us till we were ready to be lifted from drowning in sin. We have a parent who will not give up on us. And You give our life of purpose and meaning. Maybe not lead a nation to freedom but maybe one person at a time. Help us Lord to be brave, to be kind, to be proactive.

In Jesus name we pray, Aman.

Worship Sunday 2nd February 2025

I, the Lord of sea and sky,
I have heard my people cry.
All who dwell in deepest sin
My hand will save.
I who made the stars of night,
I will make their darkness bright.
Who will bear my light to them?
Whom shall I send?

Here I am Lord. Is it I Lord?
I have heard you calling in the night.
I will go Lord, if you lead me.
I will hold your people in my heart.

I, the Lord of snow and rain,
I have borne my people’s pain.
I have wept for love of them.
They turn away.
I will break their hearts of stone,
Give them hearts for love alone.
I will speak my word to them,
Whom shall I send?

I, the Lord of wind and flame,
I will tend the poor and lame.
I will set a feast for them.
My hand will save.
Finest bread I will provide
Till their hearts be satisfied.
I will give my life to them.
Whom shall I send?

“Now these are the names of the children of Israel who came to Egypt; each man and his household came with Jacob: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah; Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin; Dan, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher. All those who were descendants of Jacob were seventy persons (for Joseph was in Egypt already). And Joseph died, all his brothers, and all that generation. But the children of Israel were fruitful and increased abundantly, multiplied and grew exceedingly mighty; and the land was filled with them. Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who did not know Joseph. And he said to his people, “Look, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we; 10 come, let us deal shrewdly with them, lest they multiply, and it happen, in the event of war, that they also join our enemies and fight against us, and so go up out of the land.” 11 Therefore they set taskmasters over them to afflict them with their burdens.” Exodus 1:1-10 NKJV

Father God,

We leave Job behind with his new family and living to a ripe old age and return to Josephs family in Egypt where Jacob had just blessed his children and died. They were prosperous and expending and protected by Joseph who was Potiphar’s right hand man.

But it changes with the generations and politics and jealousy and prejudice. So they become slaves and hard worked and oppressed. But You had made a promise to Abraham to give his ancestors land and as many offspring as stars in the sky! Sometimes we cannot see how You will work out Your promises and we feel cut off from it happening. They did not know that a man would come and do miracles and through the death of Pharaoh’s first born son secure their freedom. But You did it as promised.

We know that You sent Your Son as a man who performed miracles and then died to secure our freedom from slavery to sin and death. You did it as promised. We do not know how He will return and free this world and all those that believe completely from sin, evil and death. And there will be a new heaven and a new earth (Revelation 21:1-4). But we see You keep Your promises and believe it will come to pass, in Your time.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Lord we pray, plead for Ukraine and Russia and an end to conflict.

Worship Saturday 1st February 2025

One day You’ll make everything new, Jesus
One day You will bind every wound
The former things shall all pass away
No more tears
One day You’ll make sense of it all, Jesus
One day every question resolved
Every anxious thought left behind
No more fear

When we all get to heaven
What a day of rejoicing that will be
When we all see Jesus
We’ll sing and shout the victory

One day we will see face to face, Jesus
Is there a greater vision of grace
And in a moment, we shall be changed
On that day
One day we’ll be free, free indeed, Jesus
One day all this struggle will cease
And we will see Your glory revealed
On that day

Chorus x 2

One day we will see face to face, Jesus
Is there a greater vision of grace?
And in a moment, we shall be changed
Yes, in a moment, we shall be changed
In a moment, we shall be changed
On that day
