“So David rested with his fathers, and was buried in the City of David. 11 The period that David reigned over Israel was forty years; seven years he reigned in Hebron, and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty-three years. 12 Then Solomon sat on the throne of his father David; and his kingdom was firmly established.” 1 Kings 2:10-12 NKJV

“Thus David the son of Jesse reigned over all Israel. 27 And the period that he reigned over Israel was forty years; seven years he reigned in Hebron, and thirty-three years he reigned in Jerusalem. 28 So he died in a good old age, full of days and riches and honour; and Solomon his son reigned in his place” 1 Chronicles 29:26-28 NKJV

“The Spirit of the Lord spoke by me, and His word was on my tongue. The God of Israel said, the Rock of Israel spoke to me: ‘He who rules over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God. And he shall be like the light of the morning when the sun rises, a morning without clouds, like the tender grass springing out of the earth, by clear shining after rain.’ 2 Samuel 23:2-4 NKJV

Father,

David died and his last words are written in 2 Samuel 23. He reflects on his life. Not about his possessions. Not with a list of his great achievements. He has prepared materials for the building of the Temple, but left it for His Son to achieve. He speaks of his relationship with You. He sees the moments when he obeyed and it was like light dawning. When he made good decisions it was like a cloudless day and where rain had fallen and brought forth much growth.

How we pray that our lives would be full of Your light and refreshing rain and growth. Speak to us by Your Spirit, through Your Son, so we too can live to serve You, not get hung up with possessions. So we can be just and kind with a healthy fear of sinning. And when we look back over our lives we see the mistakes we made and our regrets – but in the light of Your forgiveness. Not a guilty cloud in sight and Your refreshing rain, the water of life, which has quenched our thirst for love and acceptance. You are an amazing God.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Morning has broken
like the first morning,
blackbird has spoken
like the first bird.
Praise for the singing!
Praise for the morning!
Praise for them, springing
fresh from the Word!

Sweet the rain’s new fall
sunlit from heaven,
like the first dewfall
on the first grass.
Praise for the sweetness
of the wet garden,
sprung in completeness
where God’s feet pass.

Morning has broken
Like the first dawn
Sing Hallelujah
A new day is born

Mine is the sunlight!
Mine is the morning
born of the one light
Eden saw play!
Praise with elation,
praise every morning,
God’s recreation
of the new day!

Morning has broken
Like the first dawn
Sing Hallelujah
A new day is born
