“This is the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah the son of David, the son of Abraham: . . . “
” . . . Boaz the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth, Obed the father of Jesse, 6 and Jesse the father of King David. David was the father of Solomon, whose mother had been Uriah’s wife, 7 Solomon the father of Rehoboam, Rehoboam the father of Abijah.” Matthew 1:1 and 5-7 NIV
God of Love,
The year seems to have rushed past yet scientists tell us that time goes at a regular measured speed! We read these genealogies of years long past and forget they were life times with all the emotions, daily normalities and unexpected events that we also have! Each name representing a biography of loss, hardship, poverty, generosity, love and maybe a happy ever after ending like for Ruth. The life of Ruth the Moabitess, an outside and foreigner marrying a man from the tribe of Judah. Happy ending for her, her mother in law and us!
I love the seemingly random and yet planned history. Right here in Your genealogy a coming together of a couple who would not usually even meet. Not coincidence but Your, God led incidence. Leading to the birth of a baby boy in Bethlehem. A shadow of another baby to come.
An amazing story. So many life times till the fulness of time when Jesus was born (Galatians 4:4). So many just see the cradle at Christmas. A sort of happy ending when there was no room in the inn. But You came once and for all. The fullness of the Deity living in bodily form (Colossians 2:9). The image of You, the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation (Colossians 1:15). To be before all things, and to hold all things together (Colossians 1:17). To be the head of the body, the church; and the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, and have supremacy over everything (Colossians 1:18).
Thank You, Lord, You fulfilled all Your promises in many planned lifetimes So Jesus could be born and so we could be born again in Jesus and know Your life in all its fulness (John 10:10).
In Jesus name we give thanks and praise, Amen.
Suggestions for prayer . . .
God of love,
For our family, friends, neighbours, those we promised to pray for.
Thank You for our forefathers and those to come in our family.
For our Christian family and the plans for Christmas in our churches to draw in new people.
For our king and His family and all those in authority (1 Timothy 2:2).
For our Government and wise judgements for the future and the present.
For South Korea, their democracy and public and political unrest..
For Ukraine and Russia. A miraculous end to war.
For all the conflict in the Middle East to ceasefire and find an end to the conflicts.
For all those expecting to give birth to have a safe place to live and all they need.
For maternity units the nurses and staff to see safe deliveries.
For those who suffer the loss of a child at birth or before. To know Your comfort.
For church to be the family of those who are alone or lonely.
For us to believe, with certainty, our birth was planned and our life has meaning and purpose. Whoever we are, where ever we are, whatever age we are. It’s not what we do that makes You love us.
In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

It has been said that the last line of the first verse may have come from Wesley being inspired by 17th century philosopher Blaise Pascal’s claim that, “There is a God shaped vacuum in the heart of every person that cannot be filled by any created thing, but only by God, the Creator.”
Come, thou long expected Jesus,
born to set thy people free;
from our fears and sins release us,
let us find our rest in thee.
Israel’s strength and consolation,
hope of all the earth thou art;
dear desire of every nation,
joy of every longing heart.
Born thy people to deliver,
born a child and yet a King,
born to reign in us forever,
now thy gracious kingdom bring.
By thine own eternal spirit
rule in all our hearts alone;
by thine all sufficient merit,
raise us to thy glorious throne.
Lyrics: Charles Wesley
