“Pharaoh’s birthday came three days later, and he prepared a banquet for all his officials and staff. He summoned his chief cup-bearer and chief baker to join the other officials. 21 He then restored the chief cup-bearer to his former position, so he could again hand Pharaoh his cup. 22 But Pharaoh impaled the chief baker, just as Joseph had predicted when he interpreted his dream. 23 Pharaoh’s chief cup-bearer, however, forgot all about Joseph, never giving him another thought.” Genesis 40:20-23 NLT

“Finally, the king’s chief cup-bearer spoke up. “Today I have been reminded of my failure,” he told Pharaoh. 10 “Some time ago, you were angry with the chief baker and me, and you imprisoned us in the palace of the captain of the guard. 11 One night the chief baker and I each had a dream, and each dream had its own meaning. 12 There was a young Hebrew man with us in the prison who was a slave of the captain of the guard. We told him our dreams, and he told us what each of our dreams meant. 13 And everything happened just as he had predicted. I was restored to my position as cup-bearer, and the chief baker was executed and impaled on a pole.” Genesis 41:9-13

God of eternity,

Two years later (Genesis 41:1) is the ‘some time ago’ the cup bearer talks about! Joseph went on doing his best in the prison for 2 years, that is 730 days! It must have seemed like an eternity and have been a daily disappointment waiting and hoping. And the cup bearer was not relieved enough to remember Joseph or was he so relieved he didn’t want to risk mentioning another prisoner . . .

Joseph when he is remembered, not only gets all Pharaohs wise men and magicians off the hook, he is placed where he can fulfill his own calling. Lord we pray You would speak to us as clearly through dreams, through Your Word and by Your Spirit. So we can be where we can do good and serve You. Be patient in mundane times. Assure us as You did Joseph that You are with us even as we go through difficult times. Keep us patient when we seem to be going nowhere. And if all is quiet then like Joseph perhaps we are where we are meant to be for a couple of years! Thank You for being our guide and our redeemer.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen

John Bunyan experienced a profound conversion in his early adult years, which gave him a deep desire to preach the Gospel. Because he preached without a license from the Church of England, he spent 12 years in prison. Where he wrote Pilgrims Progress and this hymn. (12 years not 2!)

He who would valiant be ’gainst all disaster,
Let him in constancy follow the Master.
There’s no discouragement shall make him once relent
His first avowed intent to be a pilgrim.

Who so beset him round with dismal stories
Do but themselves confound—his strength the more is.
No foes shall stay his might; though he with giants fight,
He will make good his right to be a pilgrim.

Since, Lord, Thou dost defend us with Thy Spirit,
We know we at the end, shall life inherit.
Then fancies flee away! I’ll fear not what men say,
I’ll labour night and day to be a pilgrim.

“Abraham lived for 175 years, and he died at a ripe old age, having lived a long and satisfying life.” Genesis 25:7,8 NLT
“As the boys grew up, Esau became a skilful hunter. He was an outdoorsman, but Jacob had a quiet temperament, preferring to stay at home. 28 Isaac loved Esau because he enjoyed eating the wild game Esau brought home, but Rebekah loved Jacob. 29 One day when Jacob was cooking some stew, Esau arrived home from the wilderness exhausted and hungry. 30 Esau said to Jacob, “I’m starved! Give me some of that red stew!” (This is how Esau got his other name, Edom, which means “red.”) 31 “All right,” Jacob replied, “but trade me your rights as the firstborn son.” 32 “Look, I’m dying of starvation!” said Esau. “What good is my birthright to me now?”” Genesis 25:27-32 NLT

Father God,

Even your people can become dysfunctional families! There was obviously favouritism and jealousy from birth and openly shown. Do we show favouritism and in doing so put someone down? It led to Esau showing disrespect for his family openly. He disrespected and traded his birthright as the firstborn son for a meal. Afterward, when he wanted his father’s blessing, he was rejected. One wrong action led to another . . .and it was then too late for repentance, even though he begged (Hebrews 12:16-17).

Help us to learn to love as You love. Paul words it so beautifully in Hebrews 13:4-8 “Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.” We just need to be the best we can be and trust You, God for the rest.

Esau was not dying of starvation. Help us to not just see our own immediate needs out of proportion. Thank You that it is never too late to repent with Jesus and help us to grow like Jim in grace and truth.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen

Love this thoughtful rendition.

O to be like Thee! blessed Redeemer;
This is my constant longing and prayer;
Gladly I’ll forfeit all of earth’s treasures,
Jesus, Thy perfect likeness to wear.

O to be like Thee! O to be like Thee!
Blessed Redeemer, pure as Thou art;
Come in Thy sweetness, come in Thy fullness;
 Stamp Thine own image deep on my heart.

O to be like Thee! full of compassion,
Loving, forgiving, tender and kind,
Helping the helpless, cheering the fainting,
Seeking the wand’ring sinners to find.

Chorus

O to be like Thee! lowly in spirit,
Holy and harmless, patient and brave;
Meekly enduring cruel reproaches,
Willing to suffer, others to save.

Chorus

“Thomas said, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going. How can we know the way?” Jesus replied, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:5-6 NET

 “Then Pilate said, “So you are a king!” Jesus replied, “You say that I am a king. For this reason I was born, and for this reason I came into the world—to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.” 38 Pilate asked, “What is truth?” John 18:37-38 NET

God of truth,

Sometimes Father, I like to read Your word by the story and sometimes I just like to concentrate on a couple of verses. Today I just want to read the verses from yesterday again and concentrate on Jesus the Word made flesh (John 1:14). I have a Bible where the words Jesus spoke are in red print. I can read them and then the surrounding verses to put them into context. Truth. It does not change for any generation. But the enemy sometimes tries to disguise its meaning!

The enemy used the truth, but twisted it, in the garden to tempt Adam and Eve to eat the apple. He uses the same tactics today twisting the truth and half lies. Telling us other people are doing it and society has changed, moved forward so it must be ok!

Help us see truth. That sin is still sin. Some sin has become more acceptable to society, overlooked and the line has been moved. But not with You. We as Christians will always be looked upon as old fashioned, because we choose Your way. Not murdering, not getting drunk, only sleeping with our marriage partner, not telling fibs, not stealing even a safety clip! The list is endless. Will we regret living this way?

I do not think I will and it is for others to make their choices. And You forgive me when I slip and remind me if I begin to judge others. We are Your light of truth shining for all to see. We will show our joy and happiness are not dependant on sex, money or power. And we will not judge others, it is there choice, but where possible direct them to You.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine.
This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine.
This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine.
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.
(Repeat)

Light that shines is the light of love,
Hides the darkness from above,
Shines on me and it shines on you,
Shows you what the power of love can do.
Shine my light both bright and clear,
Shine my light both far and near,
In every dark corner that I find,
Gonna let my little light shine.

This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine.
This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine.
This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine.
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.

Monday gave me the gift of love,
Tuesday peace came from above,
Wednesday told me to have more faith,
Thursday gave me a little more grace,
Friday told me to watch and pray,
Saturday told me just what to say,
Sunday gave me the power divine
To let my little light shine.

This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine.
This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine.
This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine.
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.
