“Then He said to the disciples, “It is impossible that no offenses should come, but woe to him through whom they do come! It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were thrown into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones. Take heed to yourselves. If your brother sins against you, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him. And if he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times in a day returns to you, saying, ‘I repent,’ you shall forgive him.”” Luke 17:1-4 NKJV

God of the impossible,

We can say You didn’t tell it like it is. Its easier to start the day with promises rather than reality – but you prepare us for all eventualities. Because for some of us life is unexpected, confusing, and confusing. It is s not always easy especially if we are not even aware we have caused a problem. Families and friends are just people. Prone to sin like us. Misunderstandings can arise without any evil intentions. But here you are talking about the nitty gritty of being a Christian, to those who follow You.

Jesus knew what he was talking about- he experienced every sort of possible stumbling offence. He was disliked, hated for being good, disbelieved, misunderstood Later he was alone in temptation to give up, and finally betrayed by everyone. But it did not affect His behaviour. He even forgave those who put Him to death on the cross. What an example.

Not humanly possible? Help me to remember that I have been forgiven a lifetime of sin so I can forgive what others do to me. They still have to answer to You for judgement. And then rebuild trust and friendship.

Help us keep our hearts and minds uncluttered by unforgiveness and heal the memories that would seek to replay it in our minds. And help us be quick to apologise and make amends if we cause offence even unintentionally.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

God of the impossible,

For our family and friends and neighbours. Good relationships, good health, a good day.
For our Ministers, lay leaders, church members. Build the family of God.
For the royal family. Opportunities to supernaturally rebuild family and heal relationships.
For our nation and the Government we need for the future. Shake up and settle as best.
For Ukraine, a powerful move of Your Spirit to change circumstances and end war.
For families still resident here from Ukraine and still separated from their family.
For Gaza, and the Middle East. A move forward past all history and vengeance to make peace.
For schools, universities and colleges. Students, teachers, staff. Sports days and school trips.
For those living with pain and ongoing treatment, in mind or body. Our NHS, Doctors.
For those who seek vengeance to have a change of heart, seek reconciliation and let You judge.
For us to let go of hurts, unforgiveness with Your help. Unclutter minds, hearts and make room for goodness, kindness and joy.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

According to the editor of The Oxford Edition of the Works of John Wesley, “And Can It Be” was written immediately following Charles Wesley’s conversion to Christianity on May 21, 1738. Wesley had known his Bible well before this time but had not yet experienced affirmation of new birth or the wholeness of grace in his life.
Being a Christian begins with a decision. Come into my heart Lord Jesus. Best decision ever.

  1. And can it be that I should gain
An int’rest in the Saviour’s blood?
Died He for me, who caused His pain
For me, who Him to death pursued?
Amazing love! How can it be,
That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?

He left His Father’s throne above
So free, so infinite His grace
Emptied Himself of all but love,
And bled for Adam’s helpless race:
’Tis mercy all, immense and free,
For, O my God, it found out me!

    Long my imprisoned spirit lay,
    Fast bound in sin and nature’s night;
Thine eye diffused a quick’ning ray
    I woke, the dungeon flamed with light;
My chains fell off, my heart was free,
I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.

    No condemnation now I dread;
    Jesus, and all in Him, is mine;
Alive in Him, my living Head,
    And clothed in righteousness divine,
Bold I approach the eternal throne,
And claim the crown, through Christ my own.

God of the possible,

Sometimes the words of Jesus hit just the right spot. Well if we read them they hit the right spot but on occasions they seem to jump right off the page and into our present situation! That’s Your Holy Spirit working and I love the reassurance it brings. Jesus said “It is impossible that no offenses should come.” Other versions say that things that cause people to stumble are bound to come. Exactly, you understand that life just happens sometimes, Lord!

Bound to come, its impossible for them not to! Life is not all plain sailing and anyway I get sea sick sometimes. It is not devoid of emotions and reactions. But also we have to try not to be the stumbling block or cause of offence. And we do not always see what is going on in other peoples lives. What they have been through. Sometimes we see only their present behaviour, their outward appearance. Sometimes they do not see what is bothering us!

So the best way is to live and forgive as You did. Even when its hard to forgive and trust has gone.It is all about relationship. Talking, listening and forgiving and being forgiven. Lord that is not always easy, in fact it is hard. Help us.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

God of the impossible,

For our family and friends and neighbours. Good relationships, good health, a good day.
For our Ministers, lay leaders, church members. Opportunities to give a word in season.
For the royal family. Good relationships and healing conversations.
For our nation during this time of change and consideration politically. Truth, respect, honesty.
For Ukraine, a powerful move of Your Spirit to change circumstances and end war.
For families still resident here from Ukraine and still separated from family.
For Gaza, and the Middle East.
For refugees in this country to find a place to belong, friends, homes and safe living.
For schools, universities and colleges. Students, teachers, staff.
For those living with pain and ongoing treatment be it in mind or body. The NHS, Doctors.
For those who offer marriage guidance, couples therapy. For ministers premarital counselling.
For us to discover You have gone before us and prepare the way today, for good. Bumps and all!

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

A simple but profound rendition of a simple but profound hymn. Anniversary of it being written 142 years ago today! See story below.

O Love that will not let me go,
I rest my weary soul in thee.
I give thee back the life I owe,
that in thine ocean depths its flow
may richer, fuller be.

O Light that follows all my way,
I yield my flickering torch to thee.
My heart restores its borrowed ray,
that in thy sunshine’s blaze its day
may brighter, fairer be.

O Joy that seekest me through pain,
I cannot close my heart to thee.
I trace the rainbow through the rain,
and feel the promise is not vain,
that morn shall tearless be.

O Cross that liftest up my head,
I dare not ask to fly from thee.
I lay in dust, life’s glory dead,
and from the ground there blossoms red,
life that shall endless be.

Lyrics: George Matheson 1882

A much loved clergymen in the Church of Scotland. His writings were numerous and of a high order. The marvel of it all is that he accomplished so much as from the age of fifteen he was totally blind.

This is his own story of how he came to write this hymn. “My hymn was composed in the manse of Innellan on the evening of June 6, 1882. I was at the time alone. It was the day of my sisters marriage, and the rest of the family were staying overnight in Glasgow. Something had happened to me, which was known only to myself; and which caused the most severe mental suffering. But writing this was the quickest bit of work I ever did in my life. I had the impression rather of having it dictated to me by some inward voice than of working it out myself.”

“If you love me, you will obey my commandments.16 Then I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot accept, because it does not see him or know him. But you know him, because he resides with you and will be in you.” John 14:16-17 NET

“And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.” Romans 9:11 NIV

God,

Some people like to pray Father, some pray and ask Jesus, some like to intercede through the Holy Spirit. It is so wonderful that which ever name we use because You are One You hear. Using the name of Jesus reminds us that in His authority we can ask. Sometimes prayer is intimate and Your Spirit helps us in our weakness and when we just don’t have the words to say. Sometimes we pray using Your name God when we need to remember we are coming to the Lord of all. When we need a miracle.

I like that Paul writing to the Romans 9:11 is beginning to put the Trinity into words. It is a mystery and marvellous at the same time. Thank you for Your Word of truth which keeps us on the straight and narrow way (Matthew 7:13-14). Thank you for the Spirit of Truth who guides us into all righteousness. More than a comforter or helper – our advocate.

Thank You. Help us know Your presence and hear Your thoughts in our hearts and minds. Direct our steps and help us know Your peace and joy.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

God who is and always will be,

For our family and friends and neighbours. Your best for today.
For our Ministers, lay leaders, church members. Bless them and send us a harvest of new people.
For the royal family. Safe travelling and good health.
For our nation during this time of change and consideration politically. Truth, respect, honesty
For Ukraine, a powerful move of Your Spirit to change circumstances and end war.
For families still resident here from Ukraine and still separated from family.
For Gaza, and the Middle East.
For refugees around the world escaping war and persecution and with nowhere to go.
For schools, universities and colleges. Buildings with the weak concrete. Students, teachers, staff.
For those living with pain be it in mind or body.
For market gardeners in the UK. For generous allotment growers who give away their surplus.
For us to have a good day, a good nights sleep and good conversation.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Worship Wednesday 5th June 2024
Yes we had this last Saturday (different singers) but it has stayed with me and is my worship prayer for today. Indulge me.

 Come, thou almighty King,
help us thy name to sing;
help us to praise.
Father all-glorious,
o’er all victorious,
come and reign over us,
Ancient of Days.

Come, thou incarnate Word,
gird on thy mighty sword;
our prayer attend.
Come and thy people bless,
and give thy Word success,
Spirit of Holiness
on us descend.

All glory be to the Father
All glory be to the Son
All glory be to the Spirit
The blessed three in one

Come, holy Comforter,
thy sacred witness bear
in this glad hour!
Thou, who almighty art,
now rule in every heart,
and ne’er from us depart,
Spirit of power.

Chorus . . .

To thee, great One in Three,
eternal praises be
hence evermore!
Thy sovereign majesty
may we in glory see,
and to eternity
love and adore.

Chorus . . .
