“But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I am going away. For if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you, but if I go, I will send him to you.” John 16:7 NET

Now when the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like a violent wind blowing came from heaven and filled the entire house where they were sitting. And tongues spreading out like a fire appeared to them and came to rest on each one of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit, and they began to speak in other languages as the Spirit enabled them.” Acts 2:1-4 NET

God with me,

Lots of people went on holiday last week when it was half term holidays in school. They left family and friends and we missed them in church – but only for a week. We know what it is like to miss someone who has moved away for work or to be nearer their family. Or when someone has died, that is a different kind of missing.

You poured out Your Spirit on that first Pentecost morning to bereft disciples. Missing You. You went away so You could come back and never leave them alone again. And here we are today. Thanks to the faithfulness of all Your disciples down through history. Language may have changed a bit – but Thou art – or You are still our faithful ever present God and Saviour.

We may have not experienced the sound of a mighty wind or what look like tongues of fire . . . but when we asked Jesus into our lives and accepted Your forgiveness, we received Your Spirit.

We are loved unconditionally (John 3:16). You give us hope despite our circumstances (Hebrews 10:23). We have a reason to live, a calling to live Holy lives for You (2 Timothy 1:9).
We are part of Your body, the family of God united in Christ (1 Corinthians 12:27).
We have a destination beyond even death. a new home in Heaven (2 Peter 3:13).

Thank you for sending Your Spirit so we will never be left behind or alone again.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

God with me,

For our family and friends and neighbours. Meet their deepest needs for their best. Laughter.
For our Ministers, lay leaders, church members. Assure them of Your presence and love.
For the royal family. Safe travelling and good health.
For our nation during this time of change and consideration politically.
For Ukraine, a powerful move of Your Spirit to change circumstances and end war.
For Gaza, and the Middle East.
For the persecuted church in Myanmar and the struggling church in hostile countries..
For those living alone and those bereaved. For the lonely an awareness of You holding them.
For a good summer season not to hot not too dry.
For us to know Your loving presence and the joy of seeing, hearing from friends and family.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Can’t believe this was written back in the early ’70’s.

Dave says: On becoming a Christian I started to go along to my local church and found that many of the hymns and songs that they were singing I just couldn’t relate to. They were using words that were in a language and tradition I was not familiar with and very often I didn’t understand the terminology. So, I got this old guitar and I started to strum along to the songbook of the day and from there came the very first song I ever wrote. At the time I was going through a difficult patch, but I knew I had discovered something of the fatherhood of God and I knew that a relationship with Him was the only thing that would keep me secure, nothing else. Out of that response, came a very simple melody and some very simple words, and the song became ‘Abba Father'”.

Abba Father, let me be
Yours and Yours alone
May my will forever be
Ever more Your own
Never let my heart grow cold
Never let me go
Abba Father, let me be
Yours and Yours alone

“So when they had gathered together, they began to ask him, “Lord, is this the time when you are restoring the kingdom to Israel?” He told them, “You are not permitted to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the farthest parts of the earth.”” Acts 1:6-8 NET

“Therefore stay alert, because you do not know on what day our Lord will come. 43 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have been alert and would not have let his house be broken into. 44 Therefore you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.” Matthew 24:42-44 NET

Father of order,

You revealed Yourself to a man who became a family that became a nation. You travelled with them speaking through Your priests, prophets and kings. Then You revealed Yourself in person in human form as Jesus. But man being man they put You to death for doing good. But You are the God of life! You forgave and poured out Your Spirit to those who seek You. You have changed millions of lives, You changed mine.

The disciples and followers of Jesus were waiting in Jerusalem. Not sure of what would happen next or how or when! Some times we are not sure what You are going to do in our lives. We pray and wait. We are also waiting for Jesus to come back as He promised.

Thank You that as we wait we have Your Holy Spirit. Assuring us of Your forgiveness and love and the power of Your resurrection (Philippians 3:10). Reminding us You are faithful and keep Your promises. Keep us faithful while we wait for answers to prayers in Your time and Your way. With our eyes to the future with You, even if You do not come again in our lifetime.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

I am resurrecting this Pentecostal hymn once again as I love it. It is old but for me – timeless. And we need the Spirit every day every minute. Read the story of the hymn below the lyrics.

They were gathered in an upper chamber,
As commanded by the risen Lord,
And the promise of the Father
There they sought with one accord
When the Holy Ghost from heav’n descended
Like a rushing wind and tongues of fire:
So dear Lord, we seek Thy blessing,
Come with glory now our hearts inspire.

Let the fire fall, let the fire fall
Let the fire from heaven fall;
We are waiting and expecting
Now in faith dear Lord we call;
Let the fire fall, let the fire fall
On Thy promise we depend;
From the glory of Thy presence
Let the Pentecostal fire descend.

As Elijah we would raise the altar
For our testimony clear and true
Christ the Saviour, loving Healer,
Coming Lord Baptizer too
Ever flowing grace and full salvation
For a ruined race Thy love has planned
For this blessed revelation
For Thy written Word we dare to stand

This the Covenanted promise given
To as many as the Lord shall call,
To the fathers and their children,
To thy people, one and all;
So rejoicing in thy Word unfailing,
We draw nigh In faith Thy power to know –
Come, O come, thou burning Spirit,
Set our hearts with heavenly fire aglow.

Lyrics: Harry Tee
First published in 1951 and again in 2006 and 2015

The test of true revival is that the fruit will be seen in individual lives which will then have a marked effect upon the community. One such true revival was that in Kilsyth, Scotland, beginning in 1908 where the writer of this hymn, Harry Tee, was the leading elder of the church from 1922 until his death in 1959. Harry and the church there in Kilsyth, experienced a true ‘upper chamber’ revival. For 9 months, meetings were held every night as folk gathered in and around the church. Crowds spilled out on to the streets and on to the church roof (!) which made Kilsyth something of a ‘Pentecostal spectacle’. Alexander Boddy, had stood on a pulpit with Evan Roberts in 1905 during the Welsh Revival and one year previous had been with T.B. Barratt in Norway ministering in the new Pentecostal revival. Yet when he visited the Kilsyth revival for three days at the end of March 1908, he was overwhelmed at what he saw. It was heaven on earth. He lay on his face unable to say anything.

True to real revival, hundreds of lives were radically changed and signs followed. Some of the worst characters in the community were saved. One infamous man who had had to be restrained with rope, held by no less than FIVE policemen, was transformed instantly when he was born-again and filled with the Spirit. A lady who was ill with diphtheria and had lost her hearing and speech, was instantly healed when hands were laid on her. The town which was built mostly on mining was filled with rough, hard-working men whose hearts were touched and changed. This then affected the homes and children, and it was not uncommon to hear and see children earnestly seeking the Lord, speaking in tongues and even being used of God to bring sobering prophecies. Beyond the little Scottish town of Kilsyth, this outpouring affected nations and continents as, with any true revival, a missionary zeal burned in hearts. When Harry Tee wrote the words and music to this revival hymn, he was both describing what happened in the Book of Acts as well as what happened in Kilsyth.

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.” Galatians 5:22-26 KJV

God, who is Father, Son and Spirit,

It is good to pause on this familiar, well loved Bible Verse again today but to turn to the King James version. My attention is drawn to a word we do not often use now Father, and which recent translations have changed from temperance to self-control (the ability to control oneself, in particular one’s emotions and desires, especially in difficult situations). Temperance: moderation in action, thought, or feeling. I quite like the change to self control! One could be moderately sinful where as to control oneself is about not doing what is sinful?

I suppose I have to confess I do not always control myself and You know when I am smiling but inside there is a hidden reaction. Or a far from kind quip or response. Ice Cream? No self control there either. Temperance at one time was about not drinking I believe? Perhaps it is self control after all. For some one drink is one too many!

Lord, to grow Your fruit, display Your fruit and share it with others we definitely need self control. To limit the opposites. When humour crosses over to crudity, irritability, pessimism, unkindness etc . . . Sometimes it is a battle and when we are knocked down or not well it’s harder. Help us by Your Spirit.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

I love this meditational hymn. God’s gentle Spirit but who comes with the power to conquer fear and death.

Breathe on me, breath of God
Love and life that makes me free
Breathe on me, breath of God
Fan the flame within me

Chorus
Teach my heart, heal my soul
Speak the mind that in Christ we know
Take me to Your sanctuary
Breathe on me

Breathe on me, breath of God
Love and life that makes me free
Breathe on me, breath of God
Fan the flame within me

Chorus

Speak to me, voice of God
Soft and still, inside my heart
Speak to me, word of God
Comfort, heal, restore with light

Chorus . . .

Breathe on me . . .
