Then Lot said to them, “Please, no, my lords! 19 Indeed now, your servant has found favour in your sight, and you have increased your mercy which you have shown me by saving my life; but I cannot escape to the mountains, lest some evil overtake me and I die. 20 See now, this city is near enough to flee to, and it is a little one; please let me escape there (is it not a little one?) and my soul shall live.” 21 And he said to him, “See, I have favoured you concerning this thing also, in that I will not overthrow this city for which you have spoken. 22 Hurry, escape there. For I cannot do anything until you arrive there.” Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar. 23 The sun had risen upon the earth when Lot entered Zoar. 24 Then the Lord rained brimstone and fire on Sodom and Gomorrah, from the Lord out of the heavens. 25 So He overthrew those cities, all the plain, all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground. 26 But his wife looked back behind him, and she became a pillar of salt. Genesis 19:18-26 NKJV

Lord God,

Salt, while we are on the subject. Lot’s wife, known for becoming a pillar of the white stuff. Even Jesus used her as a warning in Luke 17:32 not to look back! Her history in Genesis reads like a horror movie. Just when we think , happy ending . . .

So what are You saying to me? Did Lot and his two daughters run looking forward together encouraging each other? Did she lag behind and temptation whisper in her ear? Do we need to keep in the company of those who encourage us to look to You?

Was it punishment for her looking back or was it that she lagged behind while looking and was caught up in the destruction? Perhaps we do not have the threat of being turned into salt today but we do not always listen when Your still small voice Holy Spirit corrects or directs us . . . . Help us to trust and obey.

She became salt! I think that is much more of a statement than the newer versions which say she changed into a pillar of salt. They scattered salt to ruin the land. She became part of the dead land of Sodom and Gomorrah. A stark warning to keep our eyes on Jesus. To grow and have Your life in all its fulness, forever more (Hebrews 12:2).

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

An outline of prayer to get you started on those things you need to pray for today:-

Lord God,

Today we pray for family, friends, neighbours, neighbourhood, city and our church family.
For Putin and the end of war in Ukraine. For countries where there is no justice and equality.
For help, relief and comfort for those affected by natural disasters such as Libya and Morocco.
For the many murders in the news. For Your justice and comfort for those who have lost a loved one through violence and murder.
For our Government and the King for all they need to lead this country and set and example of commitment, honesty and dedicated service. To reveal those who have their own agenda.
For those projects our church prays for and supports, that much good would result.
For those on missions overseas that they would see miracles and be blessed themselves.
For the things we are involved in and long to see flourish. For strength for today.

Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Worship Friday 7th October 2023
Two hymns! These words are just as relevant today.

When we walk with the Lord in the light of His Word
What a glory He sheds on our way!
While we do His good will, He abides with us still
And with all who will trust and obey

Chorus
Trust and obey, for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey

Not a shadow can rise, not a cloud in the skies
But His smile quickly drives it away
Not a doubt or a fear, not a sigh or a tear
Can abide while we trust and obey

Then in fellowship sweet we will sit at His feet
Or we’ll walk by His side in the way
What He says we will do, where He sends we will go
Never fear, only trust and obey

And ‘Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus
Just to take Him at His Word
Just to rest upon His promise
Just to know, “Thus saith the Lord”

Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him!
How I’ve proved Him o’er and o’er
Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus!
Oh, for grace to trust Him more

Lord oh, for grace to trust You more

Lyrics: John H Sammis Tune: Daniel B Towner
Lyrics: Louisa M R Stead

Trust and obey was inspired in 1886 when Daniel B. Towner, was the music leader during one of Dwight L. Moody’s famous revivals. Daniel says, “Mr. Moody was conducting a series of meetings in Brockton, Massachusetts, and I had the pleasure of singing for him there. One night a young man rose in a testimony meeting and said, ‘I am not quite sure—but I am going to trust, and I am going to obey.’ I just jotted that sentence down, and sent it with a little story to the Rev. J. H. Sammis, a Presbyterian minister. He wrote the hymn, and the tune was born.” Sammis is said to have composed the lines of the refrain upon receiving the letter:
“Trust and obey—for there’s no other way To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.”

The song ‘Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus was inspired by Louisa M.R. Stead’s personal tragedy of losing her husband in a drowning accident. She found solace in trusting Jesus and wrote the hymn’s lyrics, which were later set to music by William J. Kirkpatrick. The song was published in 1882 and remains popular for its message of hope and comfort during life’s challenges.

“Then the men of the city said to Elisha, “Please notice, the situation of this city is pleasant, as my lord sees; but the water is bad, and the ground barren.” 20 And he said, “Bring me a new bowl, and put salt in it.” So they brought it to him. 21 Then he went out to the source of the water, and cast in the salt there, and said, “Thus says the Lord: ‘I have healed this water; from it there shall be no more death or barrenness.’ ” 22 So the water remains healed to this day, according to the word of Elisha which he spoke.” 2 Kings 2:19-21 NKJV

Lord God,

Yesterdays verse about being the salt of the earth reminded me of this occasion when Elisha used salt to heal the water when he visited Jericho. Joshua fought the battle of Jericho and the walls tumbled down and he cursed the ruins of the city (Joshua 6:26). Hiel of Bethel rebuilt it and as prophesied it cost the lives of two of his sons (1 Kings 16:34). And when Elisha visits much, much later there is still problems – bad crop killing water.

Elisha calls for a new bowl. No contamination in it and clearly held only the salt and water. So it could only have been a miracle, You God, answering the prayer that changed the water from death to life!

At times, the simple things we are asked to do, which seem almost pointless, are the very things which bring about wonderful results. At other times things are so beyond us we have to trust for a miracle. But then like with Elijah, the glory all goes to You, God. Not to the bowl, the water or the salt or even the one saying the words – but the one who can turn death to life. You, thank You Lord.

To some it seems pointless to simply have faith in Jesus in order to be saved. But that is the greatest miracle of all. Thank You.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

With a grateful heart, with a song of praise,
With an outstretched arm I’ll bless Your Name and
Thank You, Lord, I just want to thank You, Lord
Thank You, Lord, I just want to thank You, Lord

Thank You Lord

For all You’ve done in my life,
You took my darkness and gave me Your light
Thank You, Lord, thank You, Lord
You took my sin and my shame,
You took my sickness and heal all my pain
Thank You, Lord, thank You, Lord

With a grateful heart, with a song of praise,
With an outstretched arm I’ll bless Your Name and
Thank You, Lord, I just want to thank You, Lord

Thank You Lord

Lyrics: Paul Baloche

“When I’m writing worship songs,” Paul explains, “I realize that I’m offering a vocabulary for people to sing back to God. My hope is that, as they sing those words with melodies, it will act as a catalyst in their hearts, creating transformation deep down in their soul.”

 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.” Matthew 5:13 NIV

Almighty Everlasting God,

Salt has never lost its value. It is amazing stuff Lord and has been used for preserving, bringing out flavour and even removing stains for as long as we know. From the Egyptians in 6050 BC. Today we have all different kinds of salt, even designer ones, but they all perform exactly the same service. And You used something unchangeable to highlight Your point in Matthews Gospel.

Salt of the earth – we say it about people who we know are honest of great worth and reliable. Like salt. Do not pretend to be something they are not. Jesus is giving them a great compliment and showing them He values them. Thank You that You do encourage us first before warning us.

Just keep the main thing the main thing a tutor once told me. How wise. You tell us to keep our saltiness the main thing. You are the source of our flavour. We can taste and see that You, our Lord are good (Psalm 34:8). You keep us (preserve us) in Your love and nothing can separate us (Romans 8:38) and You keep us cleansed from all impurities (Ezekiel 36:25).

Help us keep salty for You, through You and with You.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Almighty everlasting God,

We know that this world will never be at peace till You come again. But that does not stop us asking Your help to live safe and blessed in these days. To request help for our friends and family and the grown of the churches we belong to. God of peace and mercy help us and ours live quiet, peaceful and blessed lives today.

Speak peace into world leaders and help them direct Russia to a way out of war. Change His hard heart and the hearts of those who say what he wants to hear. Or take his attention away and distract his ability to continue.

We pray the words of Your prayer Lord, lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. Help us hold fast to being good and kind and help those who are in a battle and have given themselves to the evil of drugs, crime and violence. Father deliver them to a place they can find freedom and peace in You. And surround them with support or put them where they cannot hurt and do damage.

Thank You for the blessing of a new day full of Your good company and promises.

In Jesus name we pry, Amen.

Sing them over again to me,
Wonderful words of life;
Let me more of their beauty see,
Wonderful words of life;
Words of life and beauty
Teach me faith and duty.

Beautiful words, wonderful words,
Wonderful words of life;
Beautiful words, wonderful words,
Wonderful words of life.

Christ, the blessed one, gives to all
Wonderful words of life;
Sinner, list to the loving call,
Wonderful words of life;
All so freely given,
Wooing us to heaven.

Sweetly echo the gospel call,
Wonderful words of life;
Offer pardon and peace to all,
Wonderful words of life;
Jesus, only Savior,
Sanctify forever.
