“Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!” 2 Corinthians 9:15 NLT

“For by grace you are saved through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God;” Ephesians 2:8 NLT

Saviour God,

Pauls letters are deeply personal and very passionate. He wants his readers to know the truth, stay safe, grow and have the very best of You, God. Little did he know we would be blessed by them 2000 years later! Reading verses like the one yesterday which tell us it will not be easy and people will not like us because of our faith reminds us we live in a sinful world.

So why bother, trying to tell people. Some who appear not to want to know and become irritated at the mention of Jesus. I remember being one of those people but am glad that some cared enough to make me give it some thought,. Sowed seeds till the day I realised what an indescribable gift You gave us when You sent Your Son to earth as one of us. What a gift His life was and what a gift His death and resurrection provided.

It has made an indescribable difference to my life. This gift. And all I can do is thank You and live with and for You for the rest of my life.

In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

Saviour God,

We pray all our friends, family, church and neighbours will have joy this coming week in lots of ways. We pray they will know the joy of being loved by You if not today or this week, some time soon.

Father not long ago a man escaped from prison and we heard about how overcrowded they are. We pray that not only would the justice system have truth running through it but You would shake up the system and make it fit for purpose. We pray the ministers and Christian visitors would be able to sow seeds of Your salvation and there would be good soil in their hearts. We pray for support and help on release so they do not just repeat offend.

Thank You for those who encourage us in our faith.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Worship Wednesday 4th October 2023

Everyone needs compassion
A love that’s never failing
Let mercy fall on me
Everyone needs forgiveness
The kindness of a Savior
The hope of nations

Savior, He can move the mountains
My God is mighty to save
He is mighty to save
Forever author of salvation
He rose and conquered the grave
Jesus conquered the grave

So take me as You find me
With all my fears and failures
Fill my life again
I give my life to follow
Everything I believe in
And now I surrender

Savior, He can move the mountains
My God (my God) is mighty to save
He is mighty to save
Forever author of salvation
He rose and conquered the grave
Jesus conquered the grave

Shine Your light and let the whole world see
We’re singing for the glory of the risen King, Jesus
Shine Your light and let the whole world see
We’re singing for the glory of the risen King

“Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” Matthew 5:11-12 NIV

God of truth,

Sometimes we read verses like these, and hope they will not apply to us, Father. And we remember to pray for those who are persecuted in countries where they cannot be Christian. But these are words that Jesus spoke to prepare us and they come after the sermon on the mount and before further teaching on how to live. Words that presume being a Christian will sometimes annoy others and warn us so we will not be surprised or loose faith.

We all want to be liked and be able to share how we feel with friends and family. Family and friends do not need to say anything evil against us for us to know they think our faith is foolish or a waste of time. Not being able to share Your love, share prayer can hurt Father. We turn to the verses which tell us to seek, knock and ask such as Matthew 7:7 but they still do not want to know.

Prayer is not magic and we cannot force others to know You. We can keep asking Your Holy Spirit to help them see! The only reward we want Father is to see them find You as their Saviour. We thank You for those who have. Help us to shake off and not take offence at those who do not think our faith of value. We know what it cost you and value it above all.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

God of truth,

We pray blessings on our friend, family, neighbours and church family. More than all we pray they will be open to life in You through Jesus. Help us to show them Your love.

Lord we have heard of so many attacks and deaths through the use of knives recently. We pray Holy Spirit You will cut through the evil, the hurt and the damage and plant goodness in their hearts. We pray that You would help young people be able to turn and walk away from violence.

We pray for Putin. Bless Ukraine with the end of war. And the other countries where there is the threat of conflict or ongoing internal conflicts. Help those who are seeking to make peace see success.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Worship Tuesday 3rd October 2023

Everyday they pass me by
I can see it in their eyes
Empty people filled with care
Headed who knows where

On they go through private pain
Living fear to fear
Laughter hides their silent cries
Only Jesus hears

People need the Lord, people need the Lord
At the end of broken dreams, He’s the open door
People need the Lord, people need the Lord
When will we realize people need the Lord?

We are called to take His light
To a world where wrong seems right
What could be too great a cost
For sharing life with one who’s lost?

Through His love our hearts can feel
All the grief they bear
They must hear the words of life
Only we can share

People need the Lord, people need the Lord
At the end of broken dreams, He’s the open door
People need the Lord, people need the Lord
When will we realize that we must give our lives?
For people need the Lord, people need the Lord

Lyrics: Greg Nelson / Phil Mchugh

The idea for this song emerged from a luncheon meeting in a Nashville, Tennessee, restaurant. According to the composers, as McHugh became aware of the pain in the eyes of their waitress, he said to Nelson, “People need the Lord, don’t they?” Nelson responded, “Yes, people do need the Lord.” From that brief exchange came the idea for the song, which was sketched in outline during the remainder of the meal.

“What is causing the quarrels and fights among you? Don’t they come from the evil desires at war within you? You want what you don’t have, so you scheme and kill to get it. You are jealous of what others have, but you can’t get it, so you fight and wage war to take it away from them. Yet you don’t have what you want because you don’t ask God for it. And even when you ask, you don’t get it because your motives are all wrong—you want only what will give you pleasure. James 4:1-3 NLT

Generous God,

It sounds to me like James had heard that the church was not all sweetness and light! I sort of feel this should be read with a little annoyance in the voice. They didn’t have what they wanted because they didn’t ask You, and were asking for unsuitable things, things offensive to You even!

A great preacher I was reading recently said, ” I don’t understand electricity but I’m not going to sit around in the dark till I do.” We don’t have to understand prayer fully in order to pray. But maybe we need to know our motives. James clearly says we need to know our motives! Win the lottery? We would give nearly all of it away? If we can’t give from the little we have now how would we ever give a lot?? Sometimes we need to have a word with ourselves to find the motives.

You do want us to be joyful and to provide for our needs. You are our Good Shepherd delighting to lead us into green pastures and refresh us. But we do not need envy, jealousy, malice or pride. Help us not to be afraid to ask from a seeking heart or a worried mind. You love to answer.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Generous God,

We pray for friends, family, neighbourhood and our church fellowship. All those people with so many different needs, But we can ask for their best from Your generous heart.

Pour out the hope of the end of war across Russia and Ukraine. May it be a reality and not just a hope. Pour out Your compassion upon those struggling from disaster and loss. May it also be felt through human hands and aid to feed and provide shelter and all they need.

Rain down righteousness and goodness and truth upon our politicians and councillors. May there be a consensus to do what is right rather looking to getting voted back in. We pray for Birmingham and that a solution would be found that would not cause suffering to those living there.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Worship Monday 2nd October 2023

Change my heart Oh God, make it ever true.
Change my heart Oh God, may I be like You.

Change my heart Oh God, make it ever true.
Change my heart Oh God, may I be like You.
You are the potter, I am the clay,
Mold me and make me, this is what I pray.
Change my heart Oh God, make it ever true.
Change my heart Oh God, may I be like You.

Lyrics: Eddie Espinosa

This song was written in a car in the middle of Southern California traffic not far from Disneyland. Eddie Espinosa was driving to work one day, and he prayed as he drove. He wanted to get closer to God, but there were things in his life that weren’t pleasing to God. So he prayed this prayer out loud: “God, do something. I need You to change my heart.” In the middle of traffic this song came to him and he began to sing it. He didn’t know what he was singing until he sang it.

He reached for a scrap of yellow paper, and when he stopped at the next traffic light, scribbled as quickly as possible. He tried to keep the tune in mind until he got to work. That night he taught it to a Bible study group that met in his home.
