“God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: plants yielding seeds and trees on the land bearing fruit with seed in it, according to their kinds.” It was so. 12 The land produced vegetation—plants yielding seeds according to their kinds, and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. God saw that it was good. 13 There was evening, and there was morning, a third day.” Genesis 1:11-13 NET

“Remember the Sabbath day to set it apart as holy. For six days you may labour and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God; on it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, or your male servant, or your female servant, or your cattle, or the resident foreigner who is in your gates. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth and the sea and all that is in them, and he rested on the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart as holy.” Exodus 20:8-11 NET

God of creation and rest,

The forth time God spoke in creation it was both productive and reproductive. Does it marry up with the forth commandment about Sabbath rest!? They look like opposites at first glance. W. H. Davis wrote the well known stanza, “what is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare?” Sometimes we do need to stop and rest and get a God perspective on what is in our hands and what is in Yours. You hold all creation in perpetual growth and development. Amazing. We just need to do what we can and trust You for the things which we cannot.

You taught by example from the very beginning. Time to work, time to rest, time to consider what is good. Jesus knew how to take rest and withdraw and rest in You (Luke 5:16). If he needed to take time to pause, how much more do we. The third day saw creation bursting with nature’s activity. The world will not end if we stop and rest.

Jesus showed us that Sabbath was not about rules and regulations (Matthew 12:1-8). Thou shalt not. But a day to relax, allow ourselves to unwind, know You are in control. And even consider all the wonderful lavish creation You have set in motion. Time to recharge and rejoice. Tomorrow has enough worry of its own ( Matthew 6:34). Creation is free to view, each single flower.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

God of creation and rest,

We pray:

For all our family, friends, neighbours, our church family. Those we are not close to any more.
Those living in our street or road or cul-de-sac or area. For hospitals and our Doctors surgery.
For our town, our local council and the well being of our surrounding area.
For Gaza and the Middle East, to an end to the terrorism there without more bloodshed.
For Putin, the Russian people and for change. An end of war in Ukraine.
For help, relief and comfort for those in the earthquakes zones in Afghanistan, and for those in the devastated areas in Libya and Morocco. For the ongoing aid and medical agencies.
For our world, for help to farm without harmful chemicals and room for wildlife to coexist.
For ourselves, for Your gentle guiding, support and encouragement.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

A hymn to reassure

This is my Father’s world,
And to my listening ears
All nature sings, and round me rings
The music of the spheres.
This is my Father’s world:
I rest me in the thought
Of rocks and trees, of skies and seas,
His hand the wonders wrought.

This is my Father’s world:
The birds their carols raise,
The morning light, the lily white,
Declare their Maker’s praise.
This is my Father’s world:
He shines in all that’s fair;
In the rustling grass I hear Him pass,
He speaks to me everywhere.

This is my Father’s world:
O let me ne’er forget
That though the wrong seems oft so strong,
God is the Ruler yet.
This is my Father’s world:
Why should my heart be sad?
The Lord is King: let the heavens ring!
God reigns; let earth be glad!

God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place and let dry ground appear.” It was so. 10 God called the dry ground “land” and the gathered waters he called “seas.” God saw that it was good. Genesis 1:9-10 NET

“You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold guiltless anyone who takes his name in vain.” Exodus 20:7 NET

God of the windswept sea,

Into the atmosphere and water comes dry land. Something for Your creation to stand, work and to rest upon and look heavenward to You. In hindsight we know it didn’t take them long to take Your name in vain. To believe the serpent and taste the forbidden fruit. The name of God no longer was law but something to be put to the test?

The names of my friends and family evoke good feelings treasured memories and thanksgiving. Your name evokes much more than thanksgiving. For You placed my feet upon solid ground. Giving me the choice and knowledge to build my house upon the rock. On Jesus, Your beloved Son.

“O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!” (Psalm 8:1). “Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name” (Psalm 29:2. “Hallowed be your name” (Matthew 6:9). There is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12).

So many ways we hear Your name misused today even in the shorthand of modern text OMG – Oh my God. Some people use Your name to justify their behaviour, God led me to do it, when it is their own will. Some people just use the name of Jesus as a random word! But we cannot judge and they do not know You yet. For those of us that do, as we stand on this Your created earth. in Jesus our rock of Salvation – keep us revering (to honour, admire, respect) Your name.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

God of the islands,

We pray:

For all our extended family, friends, neighbours, our church family.
Those living in our street or road or cul-de-sac or area. For isolated farmers and outworkers.
For our town, our local council and the safety of our surrounding area.
For Gaza and the Middle East, a way to forward to the end of terrorism there without more bloodshed.
For Putin, the Russian people and for their political desires to change. An end of war in Ukraine.
For help, relief and comfort for those in the earthquakes zones in Afghanistan, and for those in the devastated areas in Libya and Morocco. For the ongoing aid and medical agencies.
For our world, for solutions to pollution of the seas and rivers to be ended. Along with a solution to already used plastic and alternatives that are eco friendly.
For ourselves, for Your helping hand to guide and to keep.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Oh God, You are my God
And I will ever praise You
Oh God, You are my God
And I will ever praise You

And I will learn to walk in Your ways
And Step by step You’ll lead me
And I will follow You all of my days

Hallelujah!
For you alone are worthy
And forever we will sing
Hallelujah!
Hallelujah!
Hallelujah!
Hallelujah!

“Then God said, “Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.” Thus God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament; and it was so. And God called the firmament Heaven. So the evening and the morning were the second day.” Genesis 1:6-8 NKJV

“You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.” Exodus 20:4-6 NKJV

God Almighty,

A look at the second of ten times You spoke in creation and Your second commandment.

So a separation. Water and firmament. Modern translations looking at biblical Hebrew call firmament, ‘an expanse, a space’. Like sky and atmosphere being poured out. I had not thought of it before but it makes sense. Atmosphere and space was needed to put everything into!

If man had been there . . . would some of them have worshiped sky and some of them water. Would there have been religious division, distrust even war? And would some still have missed You, God, the creator? But then You chose to give us free will to think and choose.

We see through history and today, society worshipping, people, money, power, fame even shoes, but not You. Something, somebody becomes their idol.

But it is not for us to judge. We ned to ensure we do not think more of anything, anyone more than You. We can make no image of You because there is nothing You made anything like You. You are beyond our understanding. We may have been made in Your image (Genesis 1:27) but not with You power, majesty and glory!

Sky, air and water are the basics of life. You created, You gave us life, the very breath we breathe. We thank You for creation and worship You our creator.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Lord Almighty,

We pray:

For all those we know and love and even those we struggle with. Our church family and the church fellowships around us and all those working in them for the good of their neighbourhood.
For our our local council, the employers, the employees and the economical health of our area.
For Gaza and the Middle East a way to safe ground, peace and away from extremism. Global peacemakers.
For Russia, Putin and His driving forces to be turned away from conflict to end war in Ukraine.
For ongoing help, relief and comfort for those hit by the earthquakes in Afghanistan, and for those in the devastated areas in Libya and Morocco. For the stretched aid and medical agencies.
For our world, for solutions to pollution, rubbish and the things we do that harm it.
For our Government. For our King and His working royal family. For their family rifts to be healed.
For ourselves, for todays grace to be good, to do good and to know You with us.
In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Worship Wednesday 18th October 2023

Above all powers, above all kings
Above all nature and all created things
Above all wisdom and all the ways of man
You were here before the world began

Above all kingdoms, above all thrones
Above all wonders the world has ever known
Above all wealth and treasures of the earth
There’s no way to measure what You’re worth

Crucified, laid behind a stone
You lived to die, rejected and alone
Like a rose, trampled on the ground
You took the fall and thought of me
Above all

Lyrics: Paul Baloche, Lenny Leblanc
