“On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2 Now both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding. 3 And when they ran out of wine, the mother of Jesus said to Him, “They have no wine.” 4 Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does your concern have to do with Me? My hour has not yet come.” 5 His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.”” John 2:1-5 NKJV
Almighty and Everlasting God,
John gives us this glimpse into Jesus normal life before He completely stepped away from home to begin his ministry. Many have used this occasion to show You approve of wine drinking, and weddings. But for me it speaks about Your humanity and divinity. Your sense of family and service.
On the cusp of ministry as the Son of God you attend a wedding. A happy event but a little embarrassing because the hospitality drink had run out. No pub cellar to come to the rescue or caterers! And his mother speaks to Him as if she knows He can sort it! How did she know?
Jesus is not sure this is time for a miracle – yet – he does as His earthly mother asks. His humanity, answering His mothers request. His divinity, providing not just more wedding wine – but a great vintage wine. ( John 2:10).
Thank You that the more we read Your Word the more we see You in Your Son. And we cannot but give thanks that You came among us, as one of us and touched us with the divine. We too are changed, not from water to the best wine but from sinners to saints (one of God’s chosen and forgiven children). And You are saving the best till last, for when we see You face to face.
In Jesus name we pray.
Suggestions for prayer . . .
Almighty and everlasting God,
For our family, friends, neighbours. Touch their lives with the best of Your love and provision,
For our Ministers, lay leaders, church members. Drop blessings before them and refresh them.
For the Royal family. Ongoing health and joy in service.
For our nation and the members yet to be elected to Parliament. Encourage true hearts.
For athletes preparing for the Olympics. For good venues and accommodation.
For Gaza, and the Middle East. A change to lasting solutions for peace and the good of all.
For Ukraine, an end to war. Speak to Russian leaders and decision makers unexpectedly for peace.
For our County and its local councils and the MPs yet to be elected.
For those who need Your touch today to heal, help or perhaps hinder from doing evil.
For alcoholics and addicts. Be their constant strength and support. Freedom.
For us in the midst of whatever we are doing today to know we drink the best, the water of life. Hear and meet our needs for today.
In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
Worship Friday 28th June 2024
A song never far from my mind. The first verse addresses Jesus. Verses 2 and 3 are sung to ourselves and each other. Then Verse 4 is a crescendo, a peon of praise and worship to the Son of God, Son of man. And I love all the beautiful faces and fidgeting in the video.!
Fairest Lord Jesus,
ruler of all nature,
O thou of God and man the Son,
Thee will I cherish,
Thee will I honor,
thou, my soul’s glory, joy, and crown.
Fair are the meadows,
fairer still the woodlands,
robed in the blooming garb of spring:
Jesus is fairer,
Jesus is purer
who makes the woeful heart to sing.
Fair is the sunshine,
fairer still the moonlight,
and all the twinkling starry host:
Jesus shines brighter,
Jesus shines purer
than all the angels heaven can boast.
Beautiful Savior!
Lord of all the nations!
Son of God and Son of Man!
Glory and honor,
praise, adoration,
now and forevermore be thine.
