Holy Spirit living breath of God.

“So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves. ¹⁷The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions. ¹⁸But when you are directed by the Spirit, you are not under obligation to the law of Moses. ¹⁹When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, ²⁰idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarrelling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, ²¹envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God. ²²But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, ²³gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things! ²⁴Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there. ²⁵Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives. ²⁶Let us not become conceited, or provoke one another, or be jealous of one another.” Galatians 5:16-24 NLT

Lord Saviour and Father,

The letter to the Galatians does not just give Jewish believers freedom from the Law and gentiles the freedom not to learn it. It shows them the fulfilled law which comes by Your Holy Spirit showing them how to live. Paul does not mince his words. Immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarrelling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, envy, drunkenness, wild parties are out. And we know that all these start with a small step from the narrow way that Jesus talked about (Matthew 7:13-14). A second look. Feeding anger. Not being contented . . . they could not and we cannot say we have not been warned.

But judgement comes with generosity and the help to live right. Paul makes sure they know what takes the place of sin if they keep in step with the Holy Spirit. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law to limit these to where and when! And we should not become conceited that we have You and Your Spirit – rather we should desire that others have Your Spirit and the fruit too (Galatians 6:1-10). If I have nailed my passions and desires to the cross – why do I desire to take them back? Yet on occasions I know I do in a moment of selfishness . . . We each have different temptations and weaknesses to keep us humble and on our knees. Help us to help each other too.

“The Lord took hold of me, and I was carried away by the Spirit of the Lord to a valley filled with bones. ²He led me all around among the bones that covered the valley floor. They were scattered everywhere across the ground and were completely dried out. ³Then he asked me, “Son of man, can these bones become living people again?” Then he said to me, “Speak a prophetic message to these bones and say, ‘Dry bones, listen to the word of the Lord! ⁵This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Look! I am going to put breath into you and make you live again! ⁶I will put flesh and muscles on you and cover you with skin. I will put breath into you, and you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the Lord.’”⁷So I spoke this message, just as he told me. Suddenly as I spoke, there was a rattling noise all across the valley. The bones of each body came together and attached themselves as complete skeletons.

⁸Then as I watched, muscles and flesh formed over the bones. Then skin formed to cover their bodies, but they still had no breath in them. ⁹Then he said to me, “Speak a prophetic message to the winds, son of man. Speak a prophetic message and say, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Come, O breath, from the four winds! Breathe into these dead bodies so they may live again.’” ¹⁰So I spoke the message as he commanded me, and breath came into their bodies. They all came to life and stood up on their feet—a great army.” Ezekiel 37:1-10 NLT

Sovereign Lord,

So rich a passage. Bones of the dead and many, many of them. Disgraced because they had not been buried. Bones have no life of their own, yet they are essential. You showed Ezekiel that their is hope even for fallen and rebellious Israel for revival. But not just to bring them back but to breathe Your life into them. To become an army. Focussed together under one leader You God and willing to serve as an Army serves. But they have to be willing to listen to the message. The bones came together but were not alive utile=until they received the prophetic message of Your life. We are sad knowing that they did not listen to Ezekiel.

It is the breath of creation from You, God that brings us to life. When we are born and take our first breath. But You offer to breath in us something more. Your eternal life. We are not just bones knit together in our mothers womb to live and die and have no meaning. Jesus came and prophesied too that we could have life and life more abundantly (John 10:10). He breathed upon His disciples following His resurrection and they received Your Holy Spirit (John 20:22) .

We are saddened that people do not want to hear about the gift of life in You. You do not want nice good people but an Army filled with Your Spirit, Your love and grace. Your passion. That the whole world may have the opportunity to hear, choose Christ and know real life. Even if it is one at a time! I feel so small and weak and dependant on You breath of life. Lift me up in Your strength.

^“And the people of the land took Jehoahaz son of Josiah and made him king in Jerusalem in place of his father. ²Jehoahaz was twenty-three years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem three months. ³The king of Egypt dethroned him in Jerusalem and imposed on Judah a levy of a hundred talents of silver and a talent of gold. ⁴The king of Egypt made Eliakim, a brother of Jehoahaz, king over Judah and Jerusalem and changed Eliakim’s name to Jehoiakim. But Necho took Eliakim’s brother Jehoahaz and carried him off to Egypt.” 2 Chronicles 36:1-4

“This is what the Lord says: “Go down to the palace of the king of Judah and proclaim this message there: ²‘Hear the word of the Lord to you, king of Judah, you who sit on David’s throne—you, your officials and your people who come through these gates. ³This is what the Lord says: Do what is just and right. Rescue from the hand of the oppressor the one who has been robbed. Do no wrong or violence to the foreigner, the fatherless or the widow, and do not shed innocent blood in this place. ⁴For if you are careful to carry out these commands, then kings who sit on David’s throne will come through the gates of this palace, riding in chariots and on horses, accompanied by their officials and their people. ⁵But if you do not obey these commands, declares the Lord, I swear by myself that this palace will become a ruin.’” Jeremiah 22:1-5 NLT

“Jehoiakim was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eleven years. He did evil in the eyes of the Lord his God.” 2 Chronicles 36:5 NLT

Lord of Righteousness,

Jeremiah spoke Your truth and gave a clear specific warning. They either did not take him seriously, were defiant in not wanting to live Your way or they just thought You, God would still help them anyway. They did not heed the word of a man of God. Jeremiah had it tough he was disbelieved, he was openly opposed and later suffered for his words of truth.

We can learn much from Him heavenly Father about longsuffering, steadfastness and obedience. Even though he did complained to You, God privately long and loud (Jeremiah 20:7-18).

Jesus too suffered for speaking the truth and He privately asked You, God ‘to take the cup from him’ when praying on the Mount of Olives (Luke 22:42). All the disciples had fallen asleep.

Sometimes it is amazing to be one of Your children and singing Your praises. Other times it can be a long lonely walk. And no-one can truly know what we are going through but You, God by Your Holy Spirit. Help us when we complain and doubt and get fed up. Jeremiah said I wish I had never been born (Jeremiah 20:17). Jeremiah looked to You and went on to serve mightily His weakness became strength in You. Help us to look up to You and serve on this Sabbath day and this week and always. And perhaps humanly speaking Lord God not so much of the suffering and complaining?
