“And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and forgot the Lord their God, and served Baalim and the groves. Therefore the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Chushanrishathaim king of Mesopotamia: and the children of Israel served Chushanrishathaim eight years. And when the children of Israel cried unto the Lord, the Lord raised up a deliverer to the children of Israel, who delivered them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother. And the Spirit of the Lord came upon him, and he judged Israel, and went out to war: and the Lord delivered Chushanrishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed against Chushanrishathaim. 11 And the land had rest forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died.” Judges 3:7-11 NKJV

Lord God,

The children of Israel may have forgotten You and be doing whatever they liked in the groves . . . but You could not forget them. And where do they call in times of trouble? To the only one who could help them?

Othniel was mentioned in chapter 1:13, Caleb’s younger brother and from the tribe of Judah. He already has proven leadership and battle success. And we read under him there was 40 years rest. Till he died. Ah well. But the most important verse for me is , “And the Spirit of the Lord came upon him. Your Spirit Lord. You generously provided for his need as a leader and he was able to judge, lead and know when to war.

It was Your generosity in giving of Yourself that enabled 40 years rest for the children of Israel. Today it is not just one man, one leader who can know Your presence by Your Spirit – but You have poured out Your Spirit upon all Your children, all those who are Yours in Jesus. Giving us gifts and guidance and reassurance and rest.

We pray at this time that leaders of churches would be led by You and that Your Spirit would speak peace into world leaders too. And that we may walk in step with Your Spirit and find rest in the mess.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Spirit of the living God
Spirit of the living God
We only want to hear Your voice
We’re hanging on every word

Spirit of the living God
Spirit of the living God
We want to know You more and more
We’re hanging on every word

‘Cause when You speak, and when You move
When You do what only You can do
It changes us
It changes what we see and what we seek
When You come in the room
When You do what only You can do
It changes us
It changes what we see and what we seek
You’re changing everything

Spirit of the living God
Spirit of the living God
We’re leaning in to all You are
Everything else can wait

Spirit of the living God
Spirit of the living God
Come now and breathe upon our hearts
Come now and have Your way

‘Cause when You speak, and when You move
When You do what only You can do
It changes us
It changes what we see and what we seek
When You come in the room
When You do what only You can do
It changes us
It changes what we see and what we seek
You’re changing everything

When You move, You move all our fears
When You move, You move us to tears
When You move, You move all our fears (yes, You do)
When You move, You move us to tears

When You fall, we fall on our knees
When You fall, we fall at Your feet
When You fall, we fall on our knees
When You fall, we fall at Your feet

Cause when You speak, when You move
When You do what only You can do
It changes us
It changes what we see and what we seek
When You come in the room
When You do what only You can do
It changes us
It changes what we see and what we seek
You’re changing everything

“The Israelites did evil in the Lord’s sight. They forgot about the Lord their God, and they served the images of Baal and the Asherah poles. Then the Lord burned with anger against Israel, and he turned them over to King Cushan-rishathaim of Aram-naharaim. And the Israelites served Cushan-rishathaim for eight years. But when the people of Israel cried out to the Lord for help, the Lord raised up a rescuer to save them. His name was Othniel, the son of Caleb’s younger brother, Kenaz. 10 The Spirit of the Lord came upon him, and he became Israel’s judge. He went to war against King Cushan-rishathaim of Aram, and the Lord gave Othniel victory over him. 11 So there was peace in the land for forty years. Then Othniel son of Kenaz died.”
Judges 3:7-11 NLT

Lord God of all,

Joshua has died (Joshua 24:29) and Eleazar the High Priest died (Joshua 24:3). History is a history of change. But it is in keeping a firm foundation that gives a good future. It is not standing still but keeping those things that give stability. But once again we read the children of Israel forgot God their security. But even here in the midst of their enemies and living in war torn lands You proved faithful. You waited till they realised their need and cried to You, You answered. It was not an easy answer and they had to deal with the trouble it did not just disappear! But then their was 40 years peace.

It is very reassuring Lord to know that we can call on You whether trouble is just life happening, because we have got in a mess, sinned or the enemy trying to get us down. Many of the Psalms speak about being able to call on You in times of trouble (34:17, 50:15) Then Jesus came and said, “Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened.” (Matthew 7:7)

There is no limit to Your help in all our situations. And there is an eternity of peace. Not dead peace and calm and quiet. But a living, joyful love filled fellowship of peace with You now and in Heaven. Please be our help at all times, O Lord our God.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Our God, our help in ages past,
Our hope for years to come,
Our shelter from the stormy blast,
And our eternal home:

Under the shadow of your throne
Your saints have dwelt secure;
All we need is You alone,
And our defense is sure.

Our God, our help in ages past,
Our hope for years to come,
God be our guide

As long as life will last
As long as life will las

Before the hills in order stood
Or Earth received her frame,
From everlasting you are God,
For evermore the same.

Our God, our help in ages past,
Our hope for years to come,
God be our guide

As long as life will last
As long as life will las
