“Then Abimelek said to Isaac, “Move away from us; you have become too powerful for us.”17 So Isaac moved away from there and encamped in the Valley of Gerar, where he settled. 18 Isaac reopened the wells that had been dug in the time of his father Abraham, which the Philistines had stopped up after Abraham died, and he gave them the same names his father had given them. 19 Isaac’s servants dug in the valley and discovered a well of fresh water there. 20 But the herders of Gerar quarrelled with those of Isaac and said, “The water is ours!” So he named the well Esek, because they disputed with him. 21 Then they dug another well, but they quarrelled over that one also; so he named it Sitnah. 22 He moved on from there and dug another well, and no one quarrelled over it. He named it Rehoboth, saying, “Now the Lord has given us room and we will flourish in the land.” Genesis 26:16-23 NIV

God of the thirsty,

It is easy to pass over passages like this where there is movement but no real life changing experiences. But for Isaac and his shepherds these were days of worry, trouble and annoyance. Probably sleepless not knowing what may happen next. Abimelek was true to his word and the disputes were only verbal scuffles and threats (Genesis 26:11)!

Isaac seemed to know what arguments to stand up to and when to back off for a peaceful life. Did You prompt him? There was an awful lot of digging and this was when it was all done by hand in stony land with no modern equipment. At last they had a well to water their livestock and keep themselves alive.

Sometimes it does feel like we are having to dig for blessings and sometimes our spiritual life is still dry. But they had perseverance. Help us persevere and not be willing to succumb to negative voices around us or within! Remind us that negativity cannot kill us! Like at work or church if there is someone we just cannot get along with for whatever reason. Or there are those who know just how to provoke us. Help us know when to move away and dig into You for refreshment Lord. Holy Spirit release Your water of life in our hearts and grant us peace amidst the challenges of life.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Let Your living water flow over my soul,
Let your Holy Spirit come and take control,
Of every situation that has troubled my mind,
All my cares and burdens on to you I roll.

Jesus, Jesus, Jesus
Father, Father, Father
Spirit, Spirit, Spirit

Come now Holy Spirit and take control,
Hold me in your loving arms and make me whole,
Wipe away all doubt and fear and take my pride,
Draw me to your love and keep me by your side.

Give your life to Jesus, let Him fill your soul,
Let Him take you in His arms and make you whole,
As you give your life to Him, He’ll set you free,
You will live and reign with Him eternally.

Repeat first verse . . .

Lyrics: John Watson (Vinesong).

Pray for your family and friends
For Kings and those in authority
For peace and freedom for Ukraine
For our community, nation, world
Our needs.

“During harvest time, three of the thirty chief warriors came down to David at the cave of Adullam, while a band of Philistines was encamped in the Valley of Rephaim. 14 At that time David was in the stronghold, and the Philistine garrison was at Bethlehem. 15 David longed for water and said, “Oh, that someone would get me a drink of water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem!” 16 So the three mighty warriors broke through the Philistine lines, drew water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem and carried it back to David. But he refused to drink it; instead, he poured it out before the Lord. 17 “Far be it from me, Lord, to do this!” he said. “Is it not the blood of men who went at the risk of their lives?” And David would not drink it.”
2 Samuel 23:13-17 NIV

Our Father,

Last Monday I reread this passage of scripture as I had quoted it. It also came to mind again as I saw an advert for WaterAid (A charity dedicated to providing parasite free water). I was also thinking about how clean my tap water is for drinking with all these sewerage spills we hear of! I am sure the fresh well water in Jerusalem did taste better than from the skin water carriers of the day. And maybe David was remembering as a boy quenching his thirst where he was raised in Bethlehem.

Tastes, aromas can stir up happy memories. I wonder if the three were a bit miffed because he didn’t drink it after all their effort? David had a dilemma. Drink the water? But would look like he valued the water over his men and the risk they took? He decided to pour it out to God – to give thanks for their safe return. Three men, a trinity. A small witness of the lengths You would later go to to give us the water of life.

Thank You for the many things which trigger happy memories. Thank You for the things that remind us of the lengths You went to on our behalf. A glass of water reminds us You are the water of life poured out for us (John 4:14). Bread and wine remind us of the cost to Jesus(Luke 22:19). You, God paying the price while we were still Your enemies. Keep us drinking the water and pouring out our worship to You. We are never shut outside Your gates.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Our Father,

For our family, friends, neighbours, those we promised to pray for.
For our fellowship and congregation members, our ministers, servers, wardens.
For our king and His family and all those in authority (1 Timothy 2:2).
For our Government, advisors, diplomats and ambassadors.
For Ukraine and Russia. We will not stop asking for an end to war Lord God almighty.
For Israel, Lebanon, the Middle East. Countries in conflict. Your purposes override those of man.
For those charities providing clean water, pumps, purifiers and new wells near villages.
For the persecuted members of church in China. Provision, protection and purpose.
For water in places where there is drought. Both for people and livestock.
For those struggling with the frozen iciness underfoot.
For us to be filled with good thoughts and happy memories and enable our day to go smoothly.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Saturday 20th July 2024

“On the last day of the feast, the greatest day, Jesus stood up and shouted out, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me, and let the one who believes in me drink. Just as the scripture says, ‘From within him will flow rivers of living water.’” (Now he said this about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were going to receive, for the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.)” John 7:37-39 NLT

Almighty and most merciful God,

We have all known thirst, though maybe not the same as those who walk miles to find only muddy water. Jesus is attending the last day of the festival of Tabernacles and He knew all the Old testament celebrations. Everyone was gathered to celebrate and give thanks for You, God, providing daily manna (bread) and water in Moses day in the wilderness. And to remember the tabernacle was a symbol of You being in their midst as a nation. Now we see Your Son, who earlier claimed to be the bread of heaven, saying He is also the water of life and in the midst of them! More than just a tabernacle, the Word made flesh. You God dwelling among them.

On that day, I have read, Your priests would carry water from the pool of Siloam, circle the altar seven times then and pour the precious water out. Reciting Psalm 118:25, “Lord, save us! Lord, grant us success!” Praying for the day when their deliverer would come. They were looking for a great King and warrior to arise and set them free.

They did not see the humble King, the one who would pour out His life to conquer death and sin and set us free. But as the priests poured out the water, Jesus clearly spoke of what was to come and John faithfully records it in His memory to write it later in his gospel.

Water gives life. Your Holy Spirit brings eternal life and cleansing. You ensure we never need thirst again for Your presence, life, love and guidance.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

God of life,

For our family, extended family, friends, neighbours.
For unbelieving members hearts to be refreshed by Your Spirit.
For our Ministers, lay leaders, church members. Sunday school teachers.
For our king and all those in authority (1 Timothy 2:2).
For Gaza, Middle East, solutions for peace for all.
For Ukraine. Send a miracle, an end to war.
For USA amid political decisions and debates.
For the new children’s Malaria vaccines being trialled successfully in Africa.
For those who dig wells and put water purification systems in villages.
For those who set modern day slaves free and help rehabilitate them.
For appreciation of running water, clean water and Your refreshment and cleansing.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
