“So He came to a city of Samaria which is called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied from His journey, sat thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour. A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.” For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food. Then the woman of Samaria said to Him, “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans. 10 Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.” John 4:5-10 NKJV

God of Love,

Jesus weary and thirsty. It reassures me that He was truly human and yet truly divine! He knows what real life feels like. He lived as most people did, he did not have transport or His own land or vineyard. His earthly father was a tradesman. So on this day, he knew hungry and thirst. He let His disciples go ahead to fetch food and waited by a well. A well steeped in history, not any old well. On the plot of land Jacob bought when he returned home and made up with his brother Esau (Genesis 33:18). Where later Josephs bones were laid to rest when the the children of Israel reached the promised land (Joshua 24:32). A well that down through history had seen reconciliation and freedom from slavery.

Now Your Son, who came to reconcile us to You and set us free, is at the well and thirsty. A man and yet one who can offer this woman living water. Like us, she takes a minute to catch on what He is meaning and offering because she is thinking literally about water.

A thirsty Saviour and a resourceful woman (she had the means to draw and contain water). The Saviour thirsty to give her real water and satisfy her soul. We too receive Your water of life to wash us clean and quench our thirst. To satisfy our deepest longing. To be reconciled to You our loving Father and freed from the wages of sin and death to life. Life now and forever.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”” John 10:13-14 NKJV

Father God,

After yesterdays reading about You knowing us as individuals by name, this cannot have been just a random meeting between Jesus and this woman from Samaria. You knew this woman and what she needed – more than actual water!

We can live for some time without food in emergencies – but we cannot survive long without water, I think the medical profession say 3 days?! Same length of time that You were in the grave. Reminding us that thirst may be fatal after 3 days but death was beaten in 3 days! Death cannot take us because we have You, Jesus, our water of eternal life. But I digress, Lord, You organised this moment to explain to an outcast woman of Samaria, a foreigner, that You knew her problem, cared and had the solution. The water of life.

You offer us the same, personally, intimately with the same life giving power. Streams of life welling up within us, washing us clean from sin, refreshing our souls, quenching our thirst in the midst of the challenges of life. And it will never run out.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. 28 You have heard Me say to you, ‘I am going away and coming back to you.’ If you loved Me, you would rejoice because I said, ‘I am going to the Father,’ for My Father is greater than I.” John 14:26-28 NKJV

Father God,

Peace and quiet? Sometimes we equate the two together, especially if we have been in the company of small children. But quiet does not always bring peace. Peace? For me its like when that knot in my stomach goes, I do something I have worried about or I talk to someone about my fears. Or when I fall sleep after waking in the night and all those unhelpful thoughts are silenced! Here in John’s Gospel, You show us what we can exchange for those things which take away our peace of mind. Your presence can remove them, chase them away and show them up to be lies and half lies.

Thank You for showing us an aerial view beyond the present of Your eternal future. Your Son coming back to put everything right one day. Dealing finally and completely with sin and evil and creating a new heaven and earth. Thank You that we have You. There is none greater, wiser, more merciful or kinder than You. We will never be in a position where we cannot ask for help.

Thank You that life is not like and exam where we have to know everything, all the time and do more than enough to get over the pass mark. You are able to do immeasurably more than we ask or imagine through Your power within us (Ephesians 3:20). Your peace God, does not have to be earned or worked at through hours of meditation, it is a gift. The enemy would like to scare it out of us, squash it with his darkness. But You are Lord of all.

Keep us trusting Your Holy Spirit, knowing Your Word and turning away from the enemies dark thoughts. Help us to turn to You for the peace that passes all understanding when unsettling or worrying situations arise.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

God our Father,

For family, friends, neighbours, we pray answers for their prayers and for their peace of mind.
For our church family, ministers and all who serve, that they will not have worries and stress.
For all the Royal family. Charles ongoing treatment and good health. Kates full recovery.
For our local council and those who work for the council in our community.
For our government to see the way ahead through Your eyes and help speak peace for the world.
For an end to the war in Ukraine. Give Ukraine a living hope of peace. Change Russia to end war.
For the church in Ukraine, Myanmar. The underground church in many countries.
For Gaza an end to all the killing, hostage taking and hate.. Give a yearning for peace. Send hope into the situation.
For those who make life easier, shopping delivery, home helps, district nurses and carers . . .
For us and for our minds to see the good, hope for the best and laugh if little things go wrong!.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
