“When Gideon heard the dream and its interpretation, he bowed in worship before the Lord. Then he returned to the Israelite camp and shouted, “Get up! For the Lord has given you victory over the Midianite hordes!” 16 He divided the 300 men into three groups and gave each man a ram’s horn and a clay jar with a torch in it. 17 Then he said to them, “Keep your eyes on me. When I come to the edge of the camp, do just as I do. 18 As soon as I and those with me blow the rams’ horns, blow your horns, too, all around the entire camp, and shout, ‘For the Lord and for Gideon!’ 19 It was just after midnight, after the changing of the guard, when Gideon and the 100 men with him reached the edge of the Midianite camp. Suddenly, they blew the rams’ horns and broke their clay jars. 20 Then all three groups blew their horns and broke their jars. They held the blazing torches in their left hands and the horns in their right hands, and they all shouted, “A sword for the Lord and for Gideon!” 21 Each man stood at his position around the camp and watched as all the Midianites rushed around in a panic, shouting as they ran to escape. 22 When the 300 Israelites blew their rams’ horns, the Lord caused the warriors in the camp to fight against each other with their swords.” Judges 7:15-22 NLT

Lord of Order and disorder,

The three hundred men trusted Gideon had heard form God or they would never have followed him into the enemy camp armed with a jar a torch and a trumpet. No hand free for holding a weapon!?

Sometimes we have to look for Your plan forward even if it does not seem the most sensible. And be in unity so God can command the blessing (Psalm 133:3). Even here, deep in the book of endless, random Judges, we see You have a plan. They were to keep their eyes on Gideon, their Saviour, as we should keep our eyes fixed on Jesus (Hebrews 12:2). To praise you by voice or with instruments (Hebrews 13:15). Break the clay jars as we are clay jars that must die to self (Luke 9:24) and hold the light of Christ for all to see (Matthew 5:16).

I love the story of Gideon, the three hundred and Your plan for victory. We seek Your face, and praise Your name and ask that You would bring to nothing those who would oppose the gospel of Your Son. And that this Easter, and every day, Your Light would stream from heaven into many new hearts and through Your people into our families and the world.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Worship Wednesday 9th April 2025
We have a mighty wonderful God.

Well, everyone needs compassion
A love that’s never failing
Let mercy fall on me
Well, everyone needs forgiveness
The kindness of a Saviour
The hope of nations

Saviour, He can move the mountains
And my God is mighty to save, He is mighty to save
Forever, Author of Salvation
He rose and conquered the grave
Jesus conquered the grave

So take me as You find me
All my fears and failures
And fill my life again
I give my life to follow
Everything I believe in
And now I surrender, I surrender

Beware to the filthy, stained city; the city filled with oppressors!
She is disobedient; she has refused correction. She does not trust the Lord; she has not sought the advice of her God. Her princes are as fierce as roaring lions; her rulers are as hungry as wolves in the desert, who completely devour their prey by morni
ng. Zephaniah 3:1-3 NET

God who is merciful from everlasting to everlasting,

Reading Zephaniah I am struck how nothing really changes. We may think we are more sophisticated and ordered as a society but human nature is much the same. Zephaniah grew up under the reign of king Josiah’s predecessors: his evil grandfather, king Manasseh, and Manasseh’s son, the evil Amon. Surrounded by idolatry, child sacrifice, unjust killings. (2 Kings 21:16, 2 Chronicles 33:1010)

We are blessed with royalty who do not hide their faith and attend church. But over the years, members of the house of commons and Lords have hit the headlines for the wrong reasons. And society is not all well behaved or clean living. Today we are careful not to use such colourful language about sinful people for fear of slander! Sometimes the truth does not come out for years! And we are shocked by supposedly good people doing evil. Our cities do hold many today who worship anything else but You. Money, self, their own desires, the stars, science . . . We see children neglected, unloved and even murdered. Like Zephaniah we are horrified and reminded how seriously You, God, take our relationship with You. Zachariah in his first chapter reminds us that one day the unrepentant will answer to You.

Zephaniah reminds us we must choose sides. But in the midst be reminded You are still seeking and reaching out to the rebellious. Like the Good Shepherd who went after one small lost and wandering sheep (Luke 15). Our daily battle is to love the sinner, hate the sin and pray for the lost. Once upon a time it was us . . . we were sinners. We can never thank You enough that You saved us.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Suggestions for prayer . . .
God of miracles,

For our family and friends and neighbours. Health, safety purpose and salvation.
For our church, Ministers, lay leaders, church members. For renewal in the church.
For the royal family. To know You through the generations.
For our Government. Draw men and women with good hearts and good lives to take up the call.
For Ukraine, to stay free and lead Russia to desire peace and withdraw from war.
For Gaza, empower talks towards next step and give unity to all those in talks for peace.
For all who deal with sin, police, crown, magistrates and youth offending courts and prisons.
For teachers, tutors, carers, parents, mental health nurses.
For those who struggle with temper and poor mental health. Your love and power to change.
For a day to be grateful for whatever comes and look for You in our circumstances.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

“If you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.” Matthew 17:20 NKJV

God of miracles,

Nothing is impossible for you (Luke 1:37). This was also what the angel told Mary, the mother to be of Jesus! Jesus told his disciples the same in the verse quoted from Matthew above. It is another one of those verses that I remember in words and with images. I grew mustard and cress on blotting paper at junior school! I can picture a tiny little mustard seed compared to a mountain. I must admit I picture a lake district snow covered peak not a middle eastern mount! And I need my faith to grow.

This statement was in response to the disciples being unable to heal a boy who suffered seizures. The disciples came to Jesus later, privately, to learn from their failure. I do not believe I can move a mountain! But that was not what Jesus was saying. Its about praying with faith You will do something. Talking to You, eternal, immortal, to powerful to imagine, God. Trusting that You hear and answer our prayers. Its about asking for the impossible and leaving the answers to You. And not loosing faith because You do not answer as I want You to. The power will never come from our might, ability to persuade You or because we have been goodness. It will always be by Your Spirit through Your love (Zachariah 4;6).

Keep us asking for, listening and learning about and growing in faith.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Suggestions for prayer . . .
God who can,

For our family, friends, neighbours, church fellowship. Meet their many personal needs today and we ask for the miracles that some of them need, both great and small.
For Kings, rulers and Governments. Good and oppressive. Lead them to generosity and kindness.
For the HRH King Charles and HRH Duchess of Cambridge, full recovery and rest at home.
For our government, for wisdom in decisions at home and regarding other countries.
For nations and their rulers and governments to have a desire to make peace, and make it happen.
For Ukraine and Gaza permanent peace. Along with Myanmar, North Korea, Chine, Sudan, Syria.
For those who work away often unseen making society safer and pleasant. District nurses, dustbin men, electrician’s, reservoir keepers, police, bakers, carers, home helps, farmers . . .
For those who do not have what they need to live through no fault of their own. The organisations that work out of compassion to provide food, medical care and support to become self sufficient.
For refugees and children who live in continual danger and need. Send support and supplies.
For us, to have the contentment of trusting You and simple surprises to brighten our day.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Lyrics: Reuben Morgan and Ben Fielding

“Mighty to Save” is a song that came not from one situation or circumstance in our lives, but as the sum of many. Our God who is all powerful, chooses not to turn his power against us, but towards us, drawing us to himself, writing us into a new story—his salvation story. We have seen it in our own lives. We see it every week in our church. God is all about restoring people to himself.

Reuben and I have been friends since I was 15 years old and that helps a lot when co-writing, to feel comfortable to present ideas and to be honest throughout the process. “Mighty to Save” was the first song we ever finished together.

On the day we began working on “Mighty to Save,” Reuben and I were sitting in his living room working on another song. We had sort of reached a dead end and decided to move on to a new idea. We definitely didn’t realize at the time the significance of that decision, as we began to sing the words “mighty to save.”
