” And Isaac said to his father Abraham, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” He said, “Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” Abraham said, “God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.” So they went both of them together.
When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built the altar there and laid the wood in order and bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. 10 Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son. 11 But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” 12 He said, “Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.” 13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him was a ram, caught in a thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son. 14 So Abraham called the name of that place, “The Lord will provide”; as it is said to this day, “On the mount of the Lord it shall be provided.”” Genesis 22:7-14

Jehovah Jireh, God our Provider,

We worship You because we awoke to a new day. With the breath of Your Holy Spirit bringing life to our mortal bodies through Jesus Christ Your Son. Thank you for being our daily strength, not making us younger, but helping us right where we are.

Father, December seems to be galloping on and Christmas is being thought about and planned in homes and churches. That first Christmas was not just a couple of months in the planning, a good idea, a last minute attempt to speak to mankind . Your promise of a Saviour was at the beginning and seen through all the Old Testament.

We cannot understand how Abraham was willing to sacrifice His son and trust You. Isaac was a young man and, more miraculously, he was willing to be bound! They trusted and You provided. The right and appropriate sacrifice..

The ram had been born, grown up and got tangled in exactly the right place at the right time. Jesus the lamb of God who came to take away the sin of the world (John 1:29) was born so He could grow up and be our sacrifice in the right place at the right time.

Today, even before we put the baby in the manger on Christmas eve, we marvel that You sent your son. A baby in the right place at the right time. The perfect sacrifice, sinless, willing and obedient to Your will. You were willing, You planned to give You Son. Christmas is all about You, our provider and our provision. We worship You, God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen

Suggestions for prayer . . .
God our provider,

For all our family, friends and neighbours. For their many individual needs and hopes. We pray with shameless persistence they will know the true meaning of Christmas.
For churches as they prepare advent services and carol services that visitors will attend. That visitors will be blessed and drawn to come again to meet You not just to sing about baby Jesus.
For those who turn to Your prayer in times of need – help them to meet with You through it.
For our Government, King, Queen and their family and a coming together.
For Gaza and the Middle East, a miracle that will halt the war and enable peace.
For Putin and Ukraine. An end of war, conflict and bloodshed.
For all those who need to know they are loved with Your everlasting, unfailing love today.
For all those who are delivering help and aid in difficult times, war zones and places where there is famine, flood or just severe poverty.
For all those who give time to help others, prayers and finances to bless others.
For ourselves, we pray that You would accept our worship, bless us and cheer our day. Help us see Your provision in our own lives.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

“Once Jesus was in a certain place praying. As he finished, one of his disciples came to him and said, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.” Jesus said, “This is how you should pray: “Father, may your name be kept holy. May your Kingdom come soon. Give us each day the food we need, and forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. And don’t let us yield to temptation.”” Luke 11:1-4 NLT

“This, then, is how you should pray: “‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, 10 your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us today our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’” Matthew 6:9-13 NIV

Father,

I wonder how Jesus prayed when he went off alone. Silent, out loud, in tongues? Perhaps singing the Psalms? The disciples obviously felt humbled by His prayers and wanted to learn. I know the feeling of inadequacy sometimes when I pray.

I have listened to sermons, read books, been to prayer meetings and am often overwhelmed. Others seem to pray with ease. Others know more about it! Thank you that you started by simply leading the disciples in such a simple and yet profound all encompassing prayer. Whichever version we use! Help us not to say it rote like we are saying our times table off by heart.

When we do not know where to start, Your prayer can be like turning on the tap to start the water flowing. It reminds me who You are, what Your reason to be is, how I should live and be dependant on You. Sometimes we need to sort out ourselves out first, deal with any unforgiveness, temptation etc, so we can unblock ourselves and move on to listen and pray. And if, when we are down and it is all we can manage, or out of our depth, we can keep close to You with the familiar words. Thank you.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Our Father in heaven,

Hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

We pray,
For all our family, friends and neighbours. For their many individual needs and hopes. We pray they will know the true meaning of Christmas.
For churches as they prepare advent services and carol services that visitors will attend. That visitors will be blessed and drawn to come again to meet You not just to sing about baby Jesus.
For those who turn to Your prayer in times of need – help them to meet with You through it.
For our Government, King, Queen and their family.
For those in Iceland in the dangerous areas and those evacuated.
For Gaza and the Middle East, for a miracle that would enable peace.
For Putin and Ukraine. For a miracle in Putin and his entourages hearts to desire peace.
For all those who need to know they are loved with Your everlasting, unfailing love today.
For giving us a prayer which is relevant for all Christians whatever their background, personality or situation and which reminds us we are all in this together. United in Your love, hope and Your future.
For ourselves, we pray that You would accept our worship, forgive us, deliver us from evil, feed us with all we need to be nourished in mind, body and soul. And touch us with Your Kingdom love and strength.

In Jesus name we pray.

“Then Jesus turned to his disciples and said privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see! 24 For I tell you that many prophets and kings longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.”” Luke 10:23,24 New English Translation

Wonderful Lord God,

You spoke into darkness and gave us the first light of creation. Ready for our arrival. You spoke into our sinful world and gave us Your Son to light our way back to You. You gave us the light of Your Word to be a spotlight on our journey and the way home to You.

I often wonder what it would have been like to meet Jesus in the flesh. Then I remember the times the Holy Spirit has made Your presence almost tangible. And I praise You. And all the times Your Holy Spirit has reminded me Christ (and therefore You) are with me, even when I don’t feel it so.

How blessed we are that we can read and hear the words You spoke. The truth inspired by You to those who wrote the Bible. Both the Old and the New. Those who walked with You and saw the beginning faith spreading around the world and wrote in down. Thank You for Your Word. Help us read it. Understand it. Remember it. And most of all apply it where it speaks into our situation personally.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

God of Light,

We pray,
For all our family, friends, neighbours, and our church family. For their many individual needs and hopes. Keep them from evil and open their eyes to good. For our ministers, pastors and all in our congregations.
For the health of the workers rescued in India. For new safety laws and applicable good pay for such difficult work.
For Bible translators and for those who get Bibles into the hands of those who need them and have been praying for one of their own.
For our Government, King, Queen and their family.
For those in Iceland in the danger area and those evacuated.
For Gaza and the Middle East, Lord thank You for this ceasefire and pause, enable it to continue.
For Putin and Ukraine. For a beginning to the end of this war, conflict and bloodshed.
For all those who need to know they are loved with an everlasting, unfailing love today.
For ourselves, thank You for a new day. Help us see today through Your eyes how You love us and those around us.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

This is one of those hymns that allows God to speak to us directly through His Word in verses 2, 3,4 and 5. I love this gentle version.

How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord,
Is laid for your faith in His excellent Word!
What more can He say than to you He hath said,
To you who for refuge to Jesus have fled?

“Fear not, I am with thee, O be not dismayed,
For I am thy God, and will still give thee aid;
I’ll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand,
Upheld by My righteous, omnipotent hand.”

“When through fiery trials thy pathway shall lie,
My grace, all sufficient, shall be thy supply;
The flame shall not hurt thee; I only design
Thy dross to consume, and thy gold to refine.”

“The soul that on Jesus hath leaned for repose,
I will not, I will not desert to his foes;
That soul, though all hell should endeavour to shake,
I’ll never, no, never, no, never forsake!”
