Thursday 20th February 2025

“When the people saw how long it was taking Moses to come back down the mountain, they gathered around Aaron. “Come on,” they said, “make us some gods who can lead us. We don’t know what happened to this fellow Moses, who brought us here from the land of Egypt.” 2 So Aaron said, “Take the gold rings from the ears of your wives and sons and daughters, and bring them to me.” 3 All the people took the gold rings from their ears and brought them to Aaron. 4 Then Aaron took the gold, melted it down, and molded it into the shape of a calf. When the people saw it, they exclaimed, “O Israel, these are the gods who brought you out of the land of Egypt!”” Exodus 32:1-4 NLT

“When they came near the camp, Moses saw the calf and the dancing, and he burned with anger. He threw the stone tablets to the ground, smashing them at the foot of the mountain. 20 He took the calf they had made and burned it. Then he ground it into powder, threw it into the water, and forced the people to drink it. 21 Finally, he turned to Aaron and demanded, “What did these people do to you to make you bring such terrible sin upon them?” 22 “Don’t get so upset, my lord,” Aaron replied. “You yourself know how evil these people are.” Exodus 32:19-22 NLT

God of Israel,

I find it very east to sit on my high horse and see everything in black and white and in some ways it is. They disobey in the worst way possible by breaking the first commandment.

Then I can take the other side and remember Moses went up the mountain of fire for 40 days and nights. Did they think he had died or gone? And Aaron had the opportunity to calm them down lead them in worship of You and assure them Moses and You God had never let them down before! But maybe he was intimidated and feared for his life|? And the children of Israel had shown in past behaviour how short their memory of deliverance was.

But You cannot overlook their revelry and pagan worship. You cannot overlook Aarons planting the blame on others to make himself look ok. You cannot overlook their impatience at being paused for 40 days in a safe place.

Help us be content when nothing seems to be happening. You may be giving us a break. Help us keep our worship fresh when it seems we do not hear new inspiration. Help us wait for You have not left us, abandoned us and are not sleeping! Perhaps You are waiting to see if we will be faithful . . .

“The Lord then gave these instructions to Moses: 13 “Tell the people of Israel: ‘Be careful to keep my Sabbath day, for the Sabbath is a sign of the covenant between me and you from generation to generation. It is given so you may know that I am the Lord, who makes you holy. 14 You must keep the Sabbath day, for it is a holy day for you. Anyone who desecrates it must be put to death; anyone who works on that day will be cut off from the community. 15 You have six days each week for your ordinary work, but the seventh day must be a Sabbath day of complete rest, a holy day dedicated to the Lord. Anyone who works on the Sabbath must be put to death. 16 The people of Israel must keep the Sabbath day by observing it from generation to generation. This is a covenant obligation for all time. 17 It is a permanent sign of my covenant with the people of Israel. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, but on the seventh day he stopped working and was refreshed.’ 18 When the Lord finished speaking with Moses on Mount Sinai, he gave him the two stone tablets inscribed with the terms of the covenant, written by the finger of God.” Exodus 31:12-18 NLT

Lord of Creation,

The Sabbath, the day of rest from our weekly toil. Does it remind us that You, God created for six days and then rested for one? Does it remind us that You created all we see for our benefit? Does it remind us that we are no longer in a weedless, perfect garden because we just cannot resist temptation to sin. Or is it a day of rushing to get to church in the morning, washed, dressed smart and breakfasted? A day we have to cook a Sunday lunch as tradition or take the in-laws out for a meal. Or visit elderly relatives who need help. Sometimes Sunday is not a rest day – but we still need one even if it is midweek. Some people have to work.

Jesus spent a Sabbath with his disciples wandering through a field of corn and nibbling on the grains. Christian mindfulness? He silenced those who said that eating a grain of wheat on the Sabbath was breaking the law. He was the law personified and was using the Sabbath to give them rest and restoration on a relaxing walk with him (Matthew 12:1,2,8). Perhaps our Sabbath needs to contain time when we allow You, Holy Spirit to just be with us in an unstressful place. Not trying to worship, not trying to digesting large chunks of Bible, trying to keep everyone happy . . . resting in the way that is bests for us. And maybe our Sabbath needs to be on a Wednesday or another day?

“Put the altar in front of the curtain that shields the ark of the covenant law—before the atonement cover that is over the tablets of the covenant law—where I will meet with you. 7 “Aaron must burn fragrant incense on the altar every morning when he tends the lamps. 8 He must burn incense again when he lights the lamps at twilight so incense will burn regularly before the Lord for the generations to come. ” Exodus 30:6-8 NIV
“Never use this formula to make this incense for yourselves. It is reserved for the Lord, and you must treat it as holy.” Exodus 30:37 NLT
“But thank God! He has made us his captives and continues to lead us along in Christ’s triumphal procession. Now he uses us to spread the knowledge of Christ everywhere, like a sweet perfume. ” 2 Corinthians 2:14 NLT

Lord God Almighty,

All the implements, curtains and furniture are being made for the Tabernacle and the Ark. Extraordinary intricate goldwork and embroidery. Then we hear about their use. Exact, precise and only under God’s instruction. A fragrant incense only to be used on Your altar so it would remind them of Your beautiful holiness? The aroma would linger day and night all around the altar and before the ark, the symbol of Your presence in the midst of them. Where only Moses entered once a year on the Day of Atonement.

I wonder if Paul recalled this holy aroma when he said that when we spread the knowledge of Christ it is like a sweet perfume (NLT) the fragrance of his knowledge in every place (KJV). I read somewhere that the Romans when they had won a war send soldiers ahead with fragrance to denote a victory and bring out the crowds to cheer them home. Mary poured out expensive oil on Jesus feet in John 12:3, and the fragrance filled the house. We thank You, Lord that there is now no forbidden entry into Your presence because Christ has opened the way to You and the fragrance of Your presence and love can be ours always. Help us to spread the fragrance of Christ wherever we go, today and this week, and help us fill our homes with the fragrance of Your presence.
