“I took you from the ends of the earth, from its farthest corners I called you. I said, ‘You are my servant’; I have chosen you and have not rejected you. 10 So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:9,10

“For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.” Isaiah 41:13 NLT

Father of all comfort,

On wet, damp September days we shudder at the thought of extra jumpers, the cost of fuel, icy roads and socks warming on radiators. We are reminded not to worry about tomorrow!

But there are days spiritually when we do not want to be challenged by Your word, though we may need it. We do not want to learn new songs or struggle through a difficult passage of scripture. We just want to pause, be held and reminded how much You love us.

Isaiah’s times were perilous, there was war rumours of war. Food was often short or costly and not everyone was neighbourly. And they did not have TV and the radio to tell them exactly what was happening.

So today we thank You for the comfort verses that reassure us, enfold us and remind us that You are our God, You keep Your promises, proven in Jesus. Like a parent You take us by the hand and lead us.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Father of all comfort,

We pray that our friends and family will know Your comfort and Your leading. That You will take them by the hand and let them know the assurance of being loved, wanted and planned for. Meet there needs for today in mind, body and Spirit.

We continue to ask for You to change the situation in Russia and Ukraine so that there can be an end to war, conflict and oppression. Bless Your church, the people who know and love You in both countries. Give them words of faith, encouragement and a voice.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Worship Tuesday 19th Sept 2023
I heard this sung at a church I was visiting recently and it touched me with a deep assurance.

He leadeth me, O blessed thought!
O words with heav’nly comfort fraught!
Whate’er I do, where’er I be
Still ’tis God’s hand that leadeth me.

He leadeth me, He leadeth me,
By His own hand He leadeth me;
His faithful foll’wer I would be,
For by His hand He leadeth me.

Sometimes ‘mid scenes of deepest gloom,
Sometimes where Eden’s bowers bloom,
By waters still, o’er troubled sea,
Still ’tis His hand that leadeth me.

Lord, I would place my hand in Thine,
Nor ever murmur nor repine;
Content, whatever lot I see,
Since ’tis my God that leadeth me.

And when my task on earth is done,
When by Thy grace the vict’ry’s won,
E’en death’s cold wave I will not flee,
Since God through Jordan leadeth me.

Lyrics: Dr. Joseph Gilmore

When Dr. Joseph Gilmore of New Hampshire had just graduated from Newton Theological Seminary, and he served as a supply minister for a couple of Sundays in 1862 in the First Baptist Church of Philadelphia. For a midweek service, he planned to do an exposition of Psalm 23. As he began preparing his message, he got no further than, “He leadeth me…” Gilmore felt that the words take hold of him, and seemed to have special significance. In his message he emphasized that it doesn’t matter how or where God leads us, as long as we are sure that He is. A few people lingered to discuss of the message. Dr. Gilmore says: “Then and there, on a blank page of the brief from which I had intended to speak, I pencilled the hymn, talking and writing at the same time. I handed it to my wife and thought no more about it.” Mrs. Gilmore sent the poem to a Boston paper, where it was printed. In 1865 Dr. Gilmore learned his words had been set to music by William Bradbury. Gilmore said later, “I went to Rochester to preach as a candidate before the Second Baptist Church. Going into their chapel… I picked up a hymnal to see what hymns they sung, and opened it at my own hymn, He Leadeth Me.

5Let the faithful rejoice that he honours them. Let them sing for joy as they lie on their beds.Let the praises of God be in their mouths, and a sharp sword in their hands—to execute vengeance on the nations and punishment on the peoples, to bind their kings with shackles and their leaders with iron chains, to execute the judgment written against them. This is the glorious privilege of his faithful ones.” Psalm 149:5-9 NLT

God Almighty,

Your servants of old lived in perilous times and marauding armies and enemies were a real danger. The Israelites also believed they were appointed to execute vengeance. Not from personal revenge or earthly politics, but at times, in obedience to Your command.

So is this Psalm still relevant to us, Your people in Christ? Do we still have enemies? Christ never intended his gospel should be accompanied by sword or did he?

Well, we are called to praise You, while we wield the sword of the word of God, with the shield of faith, in warfare with the world (sin), the flesh, and the devil (Ephesians 6). You assure us we will be more than conquerors (Romans 8:37) through the blood of the Lamb and the word of our testimony (Revelation 12:11). A testimony about the love of God can melt the hardest heart.

We do have an enemy. We are responsible to not only be worshippers, but warriors in a spiritual warfare that at times may seem very real and difficult. In a spiritual sense, we are to execute vengeance and oppose everything that would seek to take Christ from us. Or deny Him Lord. Help us to fight the good fight of faith.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

God Almighty,

We pray for our family and friends and our neighbourhood. We pray for there present needs. But we ask for those outside Your Kingdom that You would cut through their unbelief so they can see and know Jesus in all HIs glory and grace. And find life and hope in You.

We pray for the success of the gospel wherever it is shared. We pray that the persecutors would find freedom and change sides. We pray You will keep Your church safe in areas of conflict.

Bring war to an end in Ukraine and other counties where there is no peace. Have mercy in Libya and Morocco and those who mourn and those whose lives have changed forever. Send help and comfort and gradually hope and light in their darkness.

As the nights draw in we thank You for the light of love which surrounds us.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Worship Monday 18th September 2023

Onward, Christian soldiers,
marching as to war,
With the cross of Jesus
going on before!
Christ, the royal Master,
leads against the foe;
Forward into battle,
see his banner go!

Onward, Christian soldiers,
marching as to war,
With the cross of Jesus
going on before!

At the sign of triumph
Satan’s host doth flee;
On, then, Christian soldiers,
on to victory!
Hell’s foundations quiver
at the shout of praise;
Brothers, lift your voices,
loud your anthems raise!

Like a mighty army
moves the church of God;
Brothers, we are treading
where the saints have trod;
We are not divided;
all one body we,
One in hope and doctrine,
one in charity.

Crowns and thrones may perish,
Kingdoms rise and wane;
But the Church of Jesus
Constant will remain.
Gates of hell can never
’Gainst the Church prevail;
We have Christ’s own promise,
Which can never fail.

Onward, then, ye people,
join our happy throng,
Blend with ours your voices
in the triumph song;
Glory, laud, and honor,
unto Christ the King;
This thro’ countless ages
men and angels sing.

Lyrics: S. Baring-Gould

Sunday 17th Sept 2023

“Praise the Lord! Sing to the Lord a new song. Sing his praises in the assembly of the faithful. O Israel, rejoice in your Maker. O people of Jerusalem, exult in your King. Praise his name with dancing, accompanied by tambourine and harp. For the Lord delights in his people; he crowns the humble with victory. Let the faithful rejoice that he honours them. Let them sing for joy as they lie on their beds.” Psalm 149:1-5 NLT

God of Glory and singing,

Well, this Psalmist says we should even sing for joy as we lie on our beds. Now that is not something I do too often. But its a good Sunday suggestion! Then we will be warmed up to praise and thanksgiving before we even get to church and there will be less room for negativity. And if we cannot get to church we will have an attitude of worship right where we are and no one can complain about our lack of tunefulness! Unless the windows are open.

Dancing, tambourine and harp? Maybe not for public display my dancing and I don’t have a harp or any musical instrument. I have been known to sashaying a little while washing up or clap to Christian radio or a CD!

But there’s something to think about in the middle of these 5 verses, The Lord delights in His people, crowns the humble with victory and honours the faithful. How wonderful to see ourselves from Your point of view. As giving You delight, being crowned and honoured! That surely brings joy, to know that You delight in our praises, and honour us for being faithful.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

God of Glory and singing,

Sing a love song over those we love and care about so they are soothed, refreshed and have hope. Bless our congregations with joy and praise and delight. Lift those up who are down and heal those who need a touch of Your Spirit. Give us joy in You even as we lie on our beds this evening.

Provide a safe and comfortable place to sleep for those who have lost their homes in earthquakes or floods. We pray for the transport of aid and relief to arrive quickly and where needed most.

We pray for a miracle and peace in our world and the end of conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

We thank You for all that blessed us in the week just passed and commit the week ahead to Your guidance and care.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Worship Sunday 17th September 2023

Come, we that love the Lord,
and let our joys be known;
join in a song with sweet accord,
and thus surround the throne.

Let those refuse to sing
who never knew our God;
but children of the heav’nly King
may speak their joys abroad.

The hill of Zion yields
a thousand sacred sweets
before we reach the heav’nly fields,
or walk the golden streets.

Then let our songs abound,
and every tear be dry;
we’re marching through Emmanuel’s ground
to fairer worlds on high.

‘Cause we’re marching to Zion,
beautiful, beautiful Zion.
We’re marching upward to Zion,
the beautiful city of God.
