“Are you rejoicing in the land of Uz, O people of Edom? But you, too, must drink from the cup of the Lord’s anger. You, too, will be stripped naked in your drunkenness.” Lamentations 4:21 NLT

“The Lord says to Edom, “I will cut you down to size among the nations; you will be greatly despised. You have been deceived by your own pride Because you live in a rock fortress and make your home high in the mountains.‘Who can ever reach us way up here? you ask boastfully. But even if you soar as high as eagles and build your nest among the stars, I will bring you crashing down,” says the Lord.” Obadiah 1:2-4 NLT

“Because of the violence you did to your close relatives in Israel, you will be filled with shame and destroyed forever. When they were invaded, you stood aloof, refusing to help them. Foreign invaders carried off their wealth and cast lots to divide up Jerusalem, but you acted like one of Israel’s enemies. You should not have gloated then they exiled your relatives to distant lands. You should not have rejoiced when the people of Judah suffered such misfortune.” Obadiah 1:10-12 NLT

God of all nations,

Edom. That was the land that Esau settled in. So they were related to those in Jerusalem. Isaac and Rebecca had 2 sons Esau and Jacob. Esau settled in Edom and Jacob we followed the story of his ancestors to this point. They do not escape Your judgement. The were not only neighbours but relations. They did nothing to help. Perhaps they thought it was nothing to do with them or they gloated a bit at Israel getting taken down a peg or two or three . . .

Jesus had to tell the story of the good samaritan to the Jews in his day. Because they hated the Samaritans and like wise the Samaritans hated the Jews. But they were distant relations and in neighbouring territories. It takes a brave person or a good Samaritan to go the extra mile and do good to someone not of their close family. But You God tell us no matter how safe we feel we are and how much we may not want to get involved, doing nothing when we see a neighbour in need is not acceptable to You. But we cannot help everyone all the time – show us where and when and what and how to do the best . . .

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Oh, I have days I lose the fight
Try my best but just don’t get it right
Where I talk a talk that I don’t walk
And miss the moments right before my eyes

Somebody with a hurt that I could have helped
Somebody with a hand that I could have held
When I just can’t see past myself
Lord, help me be

A little more like mercy, a little more like grace
A little more like kindness, goodness, love, and faith
A little more like patience, a little more like peace
A little more like Jesus, a little less like me

Yeah, there’s no denying I have changed
‘Cause I’ve been saved from who I used to be
But even at my best, I must confess
I still need help to see the way You see

Somebody with a hurt that I could have helped
Somebody with a hand that I could have held
When I just can’t see past myself
Lord, help me be
A little more like mercy, a little more like grace
A little more like kindness, goodness, love, and faith
A little more like patience, a little more like peace
A little more like Jesus, a little less like me

Oh, I wanna feed the beggar on the street
Learn to be Your hands and feet
Freely give what I receive
Lord, help me be
I want put You first above all else
Love my neighbor as myself
In the moments no one sees
Lord, help me be

A little more like mercy, a little more like grace
A little more like kindness, goodness, love, and faith
A little more like patience, a little more like peace
A little more like Jesus, oh, a little less like me

A little more of living everything I preach
A little more like Jesus, a little less like me
Oh, a little less like me

“Jerusalem, once so full of people, is now deserted. She who was once great among the nations now sits alone like a widow. Once the queen of all the earth, she is now a slave. She sobs through the night; tears stream down her cheeks. Among all her lovers, there is no one left to comfort her. All her friends have betrayed her and become her enemies. Judah has been led away into captivity, oppressed with cruel slavery. She lives among foreign nations and has no place of rest. Her enemies have chased her down, and she has nowhere to turn.” Lamentations 1:1-3 NLT

“Cry aloud before the Lord, O walls of beautiful Jerusalem! Let your tears flow like a river day and night. Give yourselves no rest; give your eyes no relief. 19 Rise during the night and cry out. Pour out your hearts like water to the Lord. Lift up your hands to him in prayer, pleading for your children, for in every street they are faint with hunger.” Lamentations 2:18-19

“The thought of my suffering and homelessness is bitter beyond words. 20 I will never forget this awful time, as I grieve over my loss. 21 Yet I still dare to hope when I remember this: 22 The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease. 23 Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning. 24 I say to myself, “The Lord is my inheritance; therefore, I will hope in him!” Lamentations 3:19-24 NLT

God of hope,

Lamentations anonymous and poetic. Written by a person or persons who survived. A reflection of Babylon’s siege of Jerusalem and the destruction and exile that followed (2 Kings 24 and 25)

One of the worst catastrophes in Israel’s history up to this point. God had promised Abraham the land of Canaan, David had made Jerusalem Israel’s capital where the kings from the line of David lived. Where Solomon built the temple for You, God, and where the priests maintained the rituals of Israel’s worship. 500 years of their history and then everything was lost. Lamentations a memorial to pain and confusion. And perhaps a beginning of repentance, regret and humility? And finally hope.

Amidst catastrophe however it happens the best we can do is grieve, cry out to You God, repent if we have had any part in it and finally hope in You. You will not fail us.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

The steadfast Love of the Lord never changes,
His mercies never come to an end.
They are new every morning, new every morning,
Great is Thy faithfulness.

6 At that time the Lord sent me a message. He said, “Your cousin Hanamel son of Shallum will come and say to you, ‘Buy my field at Anathoth. By law you have the right to buy it before it is offered to anyone else.’” Then, just as the Lord had said he would, my cousin Hanamel came and visited me in the prison. He said, “Please buy my field at Anathoth in the land of Benjamin. By law you have the right to buy it before it is offered to anyone else, so buy it for yourself.” Then I knew that the message I had heard was from the Lord. So I bought the field at Anathoth, paying Hanamel seventeen pieces of silver for it. 10 I signed and sealed the deed of purchase before witnesses, weighed out the silver, and paid him. 11 Then I took the sealed deed and an unseale copy of the deed, which contained the terms and conditions of the purchase, 12 and I handed them to Baruch son of Neriah and grandson of Mahseiah. I did all this in the presence of my cousin Hanamel, the witnesses who had signed the deed, and all the men of Judah who were there in the courtyard of the guardhouse. 13 Then I said to Baruch as they all listened, 14 “This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, says: ‘Take both this sealed deed and the unsealed copy, and put them into a pottery jar to preserve them for a long time.’ 15 For this is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, says: ‘Someday people will again own property here in this land and will buy and sell houses and vineyards and fields.’”
Jeremiah 32:6-15 NLT

God of Israel, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies,

Jeremiah has a dream or a vision or hears God. And even though it does not make sense he obeys! I wonder how he felt when his cousin then came and offered him his land as a purchase? Was he encouraged he had heard right? He does not hesitate but buys it and we are told the price in silver so not a token price. And this land would be only about 5 miles from Jerusalem. This would at that time still have been a war zone and looking like it would fall to the Babylonians. So it would have looked like he was throwing away his money not investing.

But he obeyed because he had heard You and even if not for a long time (it took 7 years) You were showing him there would be restoration recovery and a return for those who would be taken captive. It looks easy. He heard and he obeyed. But I wonder if he doubted he had heard. Till his cousin came. Or was it just a coincidence.

Sometimes Lord we wish You would make it clear when You speak to us. Keep the prophetic alive in our day. Sometimes You do speak and we hear the same thing several times and know we must do it. Thank You that You have infinite patience with us. Thank You that You allow us to help You. Thank You that you do not give up on us when we get it wrong. Thank You for investing Your love in us and Your people the church.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

When you come in the room
When you do what only you can do
It changes us, it changes
What we see and what we seek
You’re changing everything

When you do what only you can do
It changes us, it changes
What we see and what we seek

When you fall, we fall at your feet

When you speak and when you move
When you do what only you can do
It changes us, it changes
What we see and what we seek
When you come in the room
When you do what only you can do
It changes us, it changes
What we see and what we seek
