“So tell them, ‘As surely as I live, declares the Lord, I will do to you the very thing I heard you say: 29 In this wilderness your bodies will fall—every one of you twenty years old or more who was counted in the census and who has grumbled against me. 30 Not one of you will enter the land I swore with uplifted hand to make your home, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun. 31 As for your children that you said would be taken as plunder, I will bring them in to enjoy the land you have rejected. 32 But as for you, your bodies will fall in this wilderness. 33 Your children will be shepherds here for forty years, suffering for your unfaithfulness, until the last of your bodies lies in the wilderness. 34 For forty years—one year for each of the forty days you explored the land—you will suffer for your sins and know what it is like to have me against you.’ 35 I, the Lord, have spoken, and I will surely do these things to this whole wicked community, which has banded together against me. They will meet their end in this wilderness; here they will die.’” Numbers 14:28-35
“Of the men who went to explore the land, only Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh survived.” Numbers 14:38

Lord God Almighty,

This reminds us that You are God. There is judgement at Your throne. Not theoretical, not that doesn’t apply now but that still sees the complexity of the heart and mind of man. This generation that left Egypt constantly doubted You, complained and nothing was good enough. They always say You should have left them as slaves. One could say the spoke an endless self fulfilling prophecy that they would not make it. And they didn’t. But You in Your mercy kept Your promise to Abraham and led the next generation into the promise. Along with Caleb and Joshua. We can begin to see why Joshua becomes Moses right hand man.

Help us not to become unbelievers by our attitude. Not to get stuck in the rut of negativity and look back to what we think of as better days. Help us to see that today is the day to seek Your Kingdom, God and all Your blessings (Matthew 6:33). Help us in all our ways to acknowledge You as God and Lord, so You can direct our paths (Proverbs 3:6). And worship not whine and complain (Philippians 2:14).

At Your throne there is judgement. But Jesus took our punishment. Keep us in Your love through Your Your Son. Walking the right way, willingly, not dragging our feet or whining.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Of the men who went to explore the land, only Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh survived.

We are marching in the light of God.
We are marching in the light of God.
We are marching in the light of God.
We are marching in the light of God.
We are marching, marching, marching,
O, we are marching in the light of God.
We are marching, marching, marching,
O, we are marching in the light of God.

2. We are living in the love of God…

3. We are moving in the power of God…

Sunday 3rd November 2024

“From the rising of the sun unto the going down of the same the LORD’S name is to be praised.” Psalm 113:3

God of Light and Life,

Sunday and we praise You, Father, Saviour, Provider, Redeemer, Almighty, God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. We could go on as their are so many names trying to give us some understanding of who You are, what You do and what You mean to us. Till we get to “I Am” the name You told Moses at the burning bush and we are silenced by Your magnitude.

Some of may be praising You as they jump out of bed and others will be pulling up the covers and thinking about getting up for church . . . some will be busy getting others up and some . . . just having a second cuppa and thinking about moving!

However we start today, help us to remember to praise You for how wonderful You are and to thank You for who You are. Dawn brings light every day. The true light came into the world (John 1:9) comes into our hearts just as certainly every day, all day. If there is just one thing to start our praise today . . . it is for sending the light of Jesus for us and in us by Your Spirit.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Suggestions for prayer . . .
God of light and love,

For our family, friends, neighbours, those we promised to pray for.
For our fellowship, ministers and our and neighbouring congregations.
For our king and all those in authority (1 Timothy 2:2).
For our Government. Lords and commons. Civil Servants. Local councillors.
For Ukraine and Russia. For Israel, Lebanon, the Middle East. Miracles of Peace.
For schools as they reopen after half term tomorrow. Light of good knowledge.
For the power of the gospel to set shed light into new believers all over the world today.
For us to experience You today through Your Word even if we cannot get to church.

In Jesus name, Amen

Just enjoy this hymn first in Welsh and then in English. There is something beautiful about listening to it in the language it was written in.

Here is love, vast as the ocean,
loving-kindness as the flood,
when the Prince of Life, our Ransom,
shed for us His precious blood.
Who His love will not remember?
Who can cease to sing His praise?
He can never be forgotten
throughout heav’n’s eternal days.

On the mount of crucifixion
fountains opened deep and wide;
through the floodgates of God’s mercy
flowed a vast and gracious tide.
Grace and love, like mighty rivers,
poured incessant from above,
and heav’n’s peace and perfect justice
kissed a guilty world in love.

“Yes, you who trust him (Jesus) recognise the honour God has given him. But for those who reject him, “The stone that the builders rejected has now become the cornerstone.” And, “He is the stone that makes people stumble, the rock that makes them fall.” They stumble because they do not obey God’s word, and so they meet the fate that was planned for them. But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.” 1 Peter 2:7-9 New Living Translation

Honourable God,

Thank You that we did not trip and fall into this year. We did not come stumbling into it relying on ourselves. Frantically hoping to try harder. Like Hannah in 1 Samuel 2:2 we know, “There is no one holy like the Lord, Indeed, there is no one besides You, Nor is there any rock like our God.” And we are Yours.

In the winter winds and storms we are glad and grateful our houses are built well. (And we pray for those flooded out). But we are so much more grateful that You are our certain foundation and the cornerstone who keeps us in life’s rough weather.. The Kingdom of Heaven is secure eternally. You have kept Your church, which has Jesus as its foundation, from collapse and grown it for over 2000 years.. Whatever nation we live in we are part of Your Holy nation. Belonging to You, together, Your beloved possession.

We may not always feel it but it is true. We step daily into You. Not alone in darkness, pessimism or dread but in Your presence and light. Help us to step bravely and securely hand in hand with You. Keep us walking in the light so we can show others Your goodness and discover all the good that this year holds for us.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Suggested for prayer
Honourable God,

For all our family, friends and neighbours. So many faces come to mind and so many hopes and desires. Hear and answer their individual needs.
For our church fellowships, ministers, church officials, congregations. Grow and enrich them.
For King Charles, the Queen and their families.
Our government for You to be in all that happens this year for good..
For Ukraine and a withdrawal of Russian troops. Peace and an end to oppression.
For all areas where there is war, military oppression and civil war. For peace and a new way forward. Gaza, Sudan, the Middle East, Afghanistan, North Korea, Nigeria . . .
For those working to protect and help species threatened by extinction and loss of habitat.
For the farmers who are replanting hedges and leaving wildlife strips of land.
For our NHS. Every part of it, every employee and the ambulance services. For its future.
For winter rest for the land even though we do not always enjoy the cold and wet.
For those flooded out at home or business and those struggling to clear roads, railway lines.
For ourselves a day of good conversations that cheer us and the sound of Your encouragement in our hearts.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Lyrics: Siyahamba (written down by Andries Van Tonder, and possibly composed by him, or possibly a Zulu folk song) is a South African hymn that became popular in North American churches in the 1990s. Translated as “We Are Marching” or “We are Walking” from the Zulu language.
