Welcome

But Abram said, “Sovereign Lord, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?” And Abram said, “You have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir.” Then the word of the Lord came to him: “This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir.”” Genesis 15:2-4 NIV
“Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. But she had an Egyptian slave named Hagar; so she said to Abram, “The Lord has kept me from having children. Go, sleep with my slave; perhaps I can build a family through her.”” Genesis 16:1-2 NIV
“Now the Lord was gracious to Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did for Sarah what he had promised. Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised him.” Genesis 21:1-2 NIV

Father of life,

We have cloned animals, fertilised eggs in test tubes but we have not created life. Sarah did not believe You, God could breathe life into her womb because it did not happen straight way. As time went on she doubted. So she gave Abram her slave who give birth to a son. But she was jealous and Hagar was cast out along with her child. Her sin caused others trouble indeed! But God still kept his promise in His time.

Sometimes we pray and pray and then put it aside and wonder if it is not Your will for our life. Sometimes something happens suddenly in a surprising way and we have forgotten those prayers.
Your suddenly’s do not always come right away, then they come when the time is right. Sarah needed to be patient and trust in Your promise for years. Help us to be patient and look out for Your suddenly’s and see Your provision and opportunities. And when we pray be patient. You may answer in an amazing way. And You will answer in Your way and Your time.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Written several years before his healing miracle Standing on the Promises became an integral part of Russell Kelso Carter life.

Standing on the promises of Christ, my King,
Through eternal ages let his praises ring;
Glory in the highest, I will shout and sing,
Standing on the promises of God.

Standing, standing,
Standing on the promises of God, my Savior;
Standing, standing,
I’m standing on the promises of God.

Standing on the promises that cannot fail.
When the howling storms of doubt and fear assail,
By the living Word of God I shall prevail,
Standing on the promises of God.

Standing on the promises of Christ, the Lord,
Bound to him eternally by love’s strong cord,
Overcoming daily with the Spirit’s sword,
Standing on the promises of God.

Standing on the promises I cannot fall,
List’ning ev’ry moment to the Spirit’s call,
Resting in my Savior as my all in all,
Standing on the promises of God.

Lyrics: Russell Kelso Carter

Although Russell Carter was a professed Christian most of his life, it wasn’t until a crisis with his natural heart that he began to understand the reality and power of Bible promises. At 30, when his health was critical and physicians could do no more, he turned to God for help and healing.

He knelt and made a promise that healing or no, his life was finally and forever, fully consecrated to the service of the Lord. From that moment the written Word of God became alive to him. He began to stand upon the promises of healing, determining to believe no matter what his physical condition, or how he felt. Over the course of the next several months his strength returned, and his heart was healed! Carter lived another healthy 49 years.

The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you. “I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” Genesis 12:1-3 NIV

God of purpose,

Abram discovered that life has direction, purpose and meaning. He heard You and believed. What a difference it makes to know we have You, a God who cares, directs and has a plan for our lives. For good and not for evil (Jeremiah 29:11). It certainly was not an easy life and he never knew what was coming next! He even made mistakes. He lied and said his wife was his sister twice (Genesis 12:19 and 20:2). He took his wife’s maidservant to have a son rather than trust God to provide at first . . . then laughed at Your plan. How often we need to remember that You always lead and the enemy always tries to push!

We read through his life’s story, that Abraham keeps the faith, passes it on. Indeed today we see how all peoples have been blessed through a child born to His line. Jesus. Keep us following, not being pushed, faithful and when necessary repentant. And thank you for the purpose, meaning and direction you give to our lives.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Worship Sunday 5th January 2025

Why You ever chose me
Has always been a mystery
All my life I’ve been told I belong
At the end of the line
With all the other not-quites
With all the never-get-it-rights
But it turns out they’re the ones You were looking for
All this time

‘Cause I’m just a nobody
Trying to tell everybody
All about Somebody
Who saved my soul
Ever since You rescued me
You gave my heart a song to sing

I’m living for the world to see
Nobody but Jesus

Moses had stage fright
When David brought a rock to a sword fight
You picked twelve outsiders nobody would have chosen
And You changed the world
Well the moral of the story is
Everybody’s got a purpose
So when I hear that devil start talking to me saying
“Who do you think you are?”
I say

Chorus

So let me go down, down, down in history
As another blood-bought faithful member of a family
And if they all forget my name, well that’s fine with me
I’m living for the world to see
Nobody but Jesus
Repeat

Chorus

“And the Lord said, “Indeed the people are one and they all have one language, and this is what they begin to do; now nothing that they propose to do will be withheld from them. Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.” So the Lord scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they ceased building the city. Therefore its name is called Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of all the earth; and from there the Lord scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth.” Genesis 11:6-9 NKJV

God Almighty,

So they ceased building the city. It says that in every translation I have looked at! And yet somehow I have it in my mind that it was destroyed? Perhaps I am remembering the tower of Siloam that Jesus talks about in Luke 13:4-5. No You scattered the people because they were raising an alter to their own achievements? They were comparing themselves to You, denying you or putting You aside to make more room for themselves? Reminds me of King Nebuchadnezzar who said, “Is not this great Babylon, which I have built by my mighty power as a royal residence and for the glory of my majesty?” (Daniel 4:30). He too took all the glory for himself. He ate grass and lived as a hermit till he humbled himself.

It is good to remember that You are God, there is no other, You are the creator and there is no other. We can achieve great things, do marvelous things or even small wonderful things but You are still God and our help support and provision. Please bring us down a peg if we need it, so that You do not have to come and confuse what we are doing to get out attention. And help us build for good.

May we and You be pleased at what You have enabled us to do.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
