Welcome

“Eliashib the high priest and his fellow priests went to work and rebuilt the Sheep Gate. They dedicated it and set its doors in place, building as far as the Tower of the Hundred, which they dedicated, and as far as the Tower of Hananel. The men of Jericho built the adjoining section, and Zakkur son of Imri built next to them The Fish Gate was rebuilt by the sons of Hassenaah. They laid its beams and put its doors and bolts and bars in place. ” Nehemiah 3:1-3

 Next to him, Baruch son of Zabbai zealously repaired another section, from the angle to the entrance of the house of Eliashib the high priest. 21 Next to him, Meremoth son of Uriah, the son of Hakkoz, repaired another section, from the entrance of Eliashib’s house to the end of it. 22 The repairs next to him were made by the priests from the surrounding region. ” Nehemiah 3:20-22

30 Next to him, Hananiah son of Shelemiah, and Hanun, the sixth son of Zalaph, repaired another section. Next to them, Meshullam son of Berekiah made repairs opposite his living quarters. 31 Next to him, Malkijah, one of the goldsmiths, made repairs as far as the house of the temple servants and the merchants, opposite the Inspection Gate, and as far as the room above the corner; 32 and between the room above the corner and the Sheep Gate the goldsmiths and merchants made repairs.” Nehemiah 3:30-32 NIV

Author of Creation, God and Lord,

Nehemiah ensured all was done efficiently and in order and everyone knew what they were doing. And it was made a simple as possible. No long journeys to work at the other side of the city. You build where you lived. I love the details of the names and exactly where they started and finished and who they joined up with! Everyone knew there patch well and built well because it was for their own good. Some times God calls people to travel and work in different places like those marvelous missionaries who work overseas in countries where it is challenging. Nehemiah was called to return home!

Many he calls us to work right where they are. When I moved a few miles, around the city, it was hard to move church. But I wanted to worship where You placed me and not journey to someone else’s part of the wall. And we have to learn joined up building to reach our city for the Lord. I love that You God make us interdependent for our own good. We learn so much more by working together, side by side, staying humble, sharing the credit, learning many lessons about following You Lord with others in the flock. I love that You know us individually and as a church where we are building. Thank you that we have Your Holy Spirit to guide us, show us how to build up a joined together people not bricks . . .

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

I find myself listening to this as I do not know it well enough yet and I keep spotting scripture in the lyrics . . . some walls have to come down as some go up . . .

People
Come together
Strange as neighbours
Our blood is one

Children
Of generations
Of every nation
Of kingdom come

Don’t let your heart be troubled
Hold your head up high
Don’t fear no evil
Fix your eyes on this one truth
God is madly in love with you
Take courage, hold on, be strong
Remember where our help comes from

Jesus
Our redemption
Our salvation
Is in His blood

Jesus
Light of heaven
Friend forever
His kingdom come

Don’t let your heart be troubled
Hold your head up high
Don’t fear no evil
Fix your eyes on this one truth
God is madly in love with you
Take courage, hold on, be strong
Remember where our help comes from

Swing wide all you heavens
Let the praise go up
As the walls come down
All creation, everything with breath
Repeat the sound
All His children, clean hands
Pure hearts, good grace
Good God, His Name is Jesus
Repeat 4 times.

 I went to Jerusalem, and after staying there three days 12 I set out during the night with a few others. I had not told anyone what my God had put in my heart to do for Jerusalem. There were no mounts with me except the one I was riding on.

13 By night I went out through the Valley Gate toward the Jackal Well and the Dung Gate, examining the walls of Jerusalem, which had been broken down, and its gates, which had been destroyed by fire. 14 Then I moved on toward the Fountain Gate and the King’s Pool, but there was not enough room for my mount to get through; 15 so I went up the valley by night, examining the wall. Finally, I turned back and re-entered through the Valley Gate. 16 The officials did not know where I had gone or what I was doing, because as yet I had said nothing to the Jews or the priests or nobles or officials or any others who would be doing the work.

Then I said to them, “You see the trouble we are in: Jerusalem lies in ruins, and its gates have been burned with fire. Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, and we will no longer be in disgrace.” 18 I also told them about the gracious hand of my God on me and what the king had said to me.” Nehemiah 2:11-18 NIV

Almighty and Gracious God,

Nehemiah did not arrive in a fanfare of trumpets, laying his authority down and shouting orders. He rests three days and gets a lie of the land so to speak. Then quietly took stock of the situation actually inspecting it himself, by himself to get an unbiased view of the situation.

I am constantly reminded that the devil (the enemy) pushes and God leads. He tried to push Jesus in the desert for 40 night but Jesus was led by You, Father and Your Word and safely passed the temptation. Nehemiah takes time to see the whole actual situation so he cannot be misled. It was an overwhelming task he saw! But he did not condemn people with what he saw but called them to trust Your gracious hand and succeed together.

And Nehemiah understood that even though You had sent him there it was not his task but theirs. He was just a part of it. We may have al sorts of things we do at church, for church, in our community and it is good to remember that it is all part of the bigger picture and we are never alone. No only are You with us but we are a part of the church local, national and worldwide. Nehemiah reminds me too that where You guide us God, You provide. Thankyou that You, God did not send Your Son into the world to condemn but to save the world through Him (John 3:17).

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

The story of the song is below the lyrics.

God sent his son;
they called him Jesus;
he came to love, heal and forgive;
he lived and died to buy my pardon;
an empty grave is there
to prove my Saviour lives.

Because he lives I can face tomorrow;
because he lives all fear is gone;
because I know he holds the future,
and life is worth the living
just because he lives.

How sweet to hold a new-born baby,
and feel the pride and joy he gives;
but greater still the calm assurance,
this child can face uncertain days
because he lives.

And then one day I’ll cross the river;
I’ll fight life’s final war with pain;
and then as death gives way to victory,
I’ll see the lights of glory
and I’ll know he lives.

Lyrics: Gloria Gaynor
She writes her account: “I am a wife and a mother. It was in the middle of the upheaval in the ’60s that we were expecting our third baby. The drug culture was in full swing, existential thought had obviously saturated every area of our American thought, the cities were seething with racial tension, and the God-is-dead pronouncement had giggled its way all through our educational system.” She explains that Bill had been down physically and emotionally with mononucleosis. They had been verbally attacked by a close friend for their Christian ministry. The stress on them was intense. Gloria continues: “It was on New Year’s Eve that I sat alone in the darkness and quiet of our living room, thinking about the world and our country and Bill’s discouragement and the family problems – and about our baby yet unborn. Who in their right mind would bring a child into a world like this? I thought. The world is so evil. Influences beyond our control are so strong. What will happen to this child? I can’t quite explain what happened at that moment, but suddenly I felt released from it all. The panic that had begun to build inside was gently dispelled by a reassuring presence that engulfed my life and drew my attention. “Gradually, the fear left and the joy began to return. I knew I could have that baby and face the future with optimism and trust. It was the Resurrection affirming itself in our lives once again. It was LIFE conquering death in the regularity of my day.”

“Early the following spring, in the month of Nisan, during the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes’ reign, I was serving the king his wine. I had never before appeared sad in his presence. So the king asked me, “Why are you looking so sad? You don’t look sick to me. You must be deeply troubled.” Then I was terrified, but I replied, “Long live the king! How can I not be sad? For the city where my ancestors are buried is in ruins, and the gates have been destroyed by fire.” The king asked, “Well, how can I help you?” With a prayer to the God of heaven, I replied, “If it please the king, and if you are pleased with me, your servant, send me to Judah to rebuild the city where my ancestors are buried.” The king, with the queen sitting beside him, asked, “How long will you be gone? When will you return?” After I told him how long I would be gone, the king agreed to my request.

I also said to the king, “If it please the king, let me have letters addressed to the governors of the province west of the Euphrates River, instructing them to let me travel safely through their territories on my way to Judah. And please give me a letter addressed to Asaph, the manager of the king’s forest, instructing him to give me timber. I will need it to make beams for the gates of the Temple fortress, for the city walls, and for a house for myself.” And the king granted these requests, because the gracious hand of God was on me.” Nehemiah 9:1-8 New Living Translation

Gracious God,

Again God we read of Nehemiah giving glory to You for protecting and providing his every need. (verse 8). And before that has admitted that he was both sad and terrified. But he found Your strength in his weakness, to ask the king and queen, not just for time off but for expensive timber and letters of royal authority. And realistically, would a king and queen want a trustworthy always cheerful servant (serving wine), to be away for a long time?

Did Nehemiah have building experience? Leadership experience? He certainly seems to develop both as we read on later. Or was he just so moved at the bad news that the wall was broken down and the gates burned he was passionate for his homeland. Was he just moved to do something and not leave it to someone else?

One thing we are sure of. Your gracious hand was upon him as surely as it was on Ezra. How can we ever know if we keep quiet and never ask. The worst that can happen is a no. It took Nehemiah out of his comfort zone into the unknown. But he was not alone Your gracious hand was upon him all the way, all the time. So we too look for those opportunities to serve You God . Give us grace to ask and to see it through. Even if it is mundane and not as grand as building city walls! Build Your church Lord, use even me.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Do you remember this? Written in 1975 when the church began singing ‘modern’ choruses.

For I’m building a people of power
And I’m making a people of praise
That will move through this land by my Spirit
And will glorify my precious name

Build your church, Lord, make her strong, Lord
Join her hearts, Lord, through your Son
Make us one, Lord, in your body
In the kingdom of your Son

For I’m building a people of power
And I’m making a people of praise
That will move through this land by my Spirit
And will glorify my precious name

Build your church, Lord, make her strong, Lord
Join her hearts, Lord, through your Son
Make us one, Lord, in your body
In the kingdom of your Son

Build your church, Lord, make her strong, Lord
Join her hearts, Lord, through your Son
Make us one, Lord, in your body
In the kingdom of your Son
