“This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, after King Zedekiah had made a covenant with all the people who were at Jerusalem to proclaim liberty to them: 9 that every man should set free his male and female slave—a Hebrew man or woman—that no one should keep a Jewish brother in bondage. 10 Now when all the princes and all the people, who had entered into the covenant, heard that everyone should set free his male and female slaves, that no one should keep them in bondage anymore, they obeyed and let them go. 11 But afterward they changed their minds and made the male and female slaves return, whom they had set free, and brought them into subjection as male and female slaves.” Jeremiah 34:8-11 NKJV
Father, Lord of freedom,
I wonder which is worse? Forgetting that they should not make permanent slaves of their own people or deciding to put it right and free them and then not doing it? I don’t think that is even a valid question. Sin is sin. But it is a symptom of their not following You, and actually rejecting Your law and in the same breath rejecting Your protection and provision. I am sure if they looked at their history they would see that the two things went together. Their faithfulness to You God and Your protection. When all the first born of the Egyptians died they all lived and walked free. When their faith in You lead them through deep water and destroyed the chasing army. When they survived starving and dying of thirst in the wilderness by Your provision of manna and water. Though they did sin from time to time . . .You God showed your faithfulness.
And today we need to know Your faithfulness as we still sin.. “if we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:8-9) Help us to be truly free. Keep us from double mindedness, honest, humble and walking in You and in Your forgiveness.
