“18 So the king of Egypt called for the midwives and said to them, “Why have you done this thing, and saved the male children alive?” 19 And the midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women; for they are lively and give birth before the midwives come to them.” 20 Therefore God dealt well with the midwives, and the people multiplied and grew very mighty. 21 And so it was, because the midwives feared God, that He provided households for them. 22 So Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying, “Every son who is born you shall cast into the river, and every daughter you shall save alive.”” Exodus 1:18-22 NKJV

“And a man of the house of Levi went and took as wife a daughter of Levi. 2 So the woman conceived and bore a son. And when she saw that he was a beautiful child, she hid him three months. 3 But when she could no longer hide him, she took an ark of bulrushes for him, daubed it with asphalt and pitch, put the child in it, and laid it in the reeds by the river’s bank. 4 And his sister stood afar off, to know what would be done to him. 5 Then the daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the river. And her maidens walked along the riverside; and when she saw the ark among the reeds, she sent her maid to get it. 6 And when she opened it, she saw the child, and behold, the baby wept. So she had compassion on him, and said, “This is one of the Hebrews’ children.” 7 Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and call a nurse for you from the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for you?”” Exodus 2:1-7 NKJV

Lord God,

These are real biographies and it is hard to shorten them to a couple of verses. They give us context and emotions. You promised Abraham and through Jacobs twelve sons, his family was becoming a nation of people. The Egyptians began to fear being overtaken.

Moses birth at this time is a well known story. The Hebrew midwives, bless them, feared You more than their Egyptian Lords. But then all Egyptian people were told to cast Hebrew babies into the river to die. Levi’s wife put him in the very river he should have died in, but with a prayer and a hope. This baby still cried and the daughter of Pharaoh was touched by the babies vulnerability. Moses began his childhood. With his real mother till he was weaned and then living wealthy, educated and comfortably.

He would come to a moment of decision, but his temper caused him to sin step over the line and he had to flee. Doubtless thinking himself rubbished for the rest of his life. I wonder if he looked over his shoulder all the time. Such a burden weighs heavy. Guilt is a terrible weight.

We too come to a moments of decision, and choose not run or rather run to You and lay our burdens down. You call us to You in Matthew 11: “Come to Me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” We do not have to stay in slavery to sin and guilt. Yes, we remember, but You God say the burden of guilt is lifted and we can rest in forgiveness.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

I read that there is an interest in the Christian faith with the young adult generation. A good time to pray for revival and the laying down of burdens.

As sure as gold is precious and the honey sweet
So you love this city and you love these streets
Every child out playing by their own front door
Every baby laying on the bedroom floor
Every dreamer dreaming in her dead-end job
Every driver driving through the rush hour mob
I feel it in my spirit, feel it in my bones
You’re going to send revival, bring them all back home

I can hear that thunder in the distance
Like a train on the edge of town
I can feel the brooding of Your Spirit
“Lay your burdens down, lay your burdens down”
“Lay your burdens down, lay your burdens down”

From the Preacher preaching when the well is dry
To the lost soul reaching for a higher high
From the young man working through his hopes and fears
To the widow walking through the veil of tears
Every man and woman, every old and young
Every fathers daughter, every mothers son
I feel it in my spirit, feel it in my bones
You’re going to send revival, bring them all back home

I can hear that thunder in the distance
Like a train on the edge of town
I can feel the brooding of Your Spirit
“Lay your burdens down, lay your burdens down”
“Lay your burdens down, lay your burdens down”

Revive us, revive us. Revive us with your fire!
Revive us, revive us. Revive us with your fire!

“Then Joseph could not restrain himself before all those who stood by him, and he cried out, “Make everyone go out from me!” So no one stood with him while Joseph made himself known to his brothers. 2 And he wept aloud, and the Egyptians and the house of Pharaoh heard it. 3 Then Joseph said to his brothers, “I am Joseph; does my father still live?” But his brothers could not answer him, for they were dismayed in his presence. 4 And Joseph said to his brothers, “Please come near to me.” So they came near. Then he said: “I am Joseph your brother, whom you sold into Egypt. 5 But now, do not therefore be grieved or angry with yourselves because you sold me here; for God sent me before you to preserve life. 6 For these two years the famine has been in the land, and there are still five years in which there will be neither plowing nor harvesting. 7 And God sent me before you to preserve a posterity for you in the earth, and to save your lives by a great deliverance. 8 So now it was not you who sent me here, but God; and He has made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house, and a ruler throughout all the land of Egypt.” Genesis 45:1-8 NKJV

Father of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Joseph,

You dig each one of your people out of trouble. But the next generation still needs to learn the same lessons. To humble themselves and follow You Lord God. They cannot save anyone fully only those who follow them and only for their lifetime. They point to the need for someone to save us, from sin, slavery and death. It could not be just a man, Joseph had to die eventually and left his family to grow and prosper in freedom but to become . . . slaves.

But many did dream about a Saviour who would come. And many prophesied that he would come. And many many generations later He came as a baby Not to live and die and leave us the same. But to live and die and live again to lead us on the path back to the presence of God and peace and reconciliation and life beyond even death..

I almost always cry when I read the emotional story leading to Josephs family reunion in Egypt Tears of joy. And I wonder at the joy that will be ours and Yours God, when we enter heaven and meet Jesus face to face. We forget that You, God joy in one sinner who repents (Luke 15:7)and Your joy remains (John 15:11). There will be a day when You God sing in joy over us, Your people. (Zephaniah 3:17) I joy to be in Your family now and to remain there forever. There will be no separation (Romans 8:39).

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

“How Great Thou Art” is a hymn based on a Swedish poem entitled “O Store Gud” written in 1885 by the Swedish poet and minister Carl Boberg . The English version it is believed is a loose translation in 1949 by the English missionary Stuart K. Hine, from a Russian translation of a German translation of the original Swedish hymn. Hine had been a missionary in Western Ukraine in the 1920s.. A miracle in itself!

O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder,
Consider all the worlds thy hands have made;
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed:

Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to thee:
How great thou art! How great thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to thee:
How great thou art! How great thou art!

When through the woods and forest glades I wander
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees,
When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur,
And hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze:

And when I think how God, his Son not sparing,
Sent him to die, I scarce can take it in;
That on the cross, my burdens gladly bearing,
He bled and died to take away my sin:

When Christ shall come with shouts of acclamation,
To take me home, what joy will fill my heart!
Then I will bow in humble adoration,
And there proclaim, my God, how great thou art!

Lyrics: Carl Boberg 1859-1940

“Now Joseph was handsome in form and appearance. 7 And it came to pass after these things that his master’s wife cast longing eyes on Joseph, and she said, “Lie with me.” 8 But he refused and said to his master’s wife, “Look, my master does not know what is with me in the house, and he has committed all that he has to my hand. 9 Thereis no one greater in this house than I, nor has he kept back anything from me but you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?” 10 So it was, as she spoke to Joseph day by day, that he did not heed her, to lie with her or to be with her. 11 But it happened about this time, when Joseph went into the house to do his work, and none of the men of the house was inside, 12 that she caught him by his garment, saying, “Lie with me.” But he left his garment in her hand, and fled and ran outside.” Genesis 39:6-12 NKJV

God who knows,

I wonder at Joseph. This makes him look like a wonderful godly, heavenly focused young man. But I suspect that he was quite normal and I wonder if he did have a moments temptation. But he fought it and did not give in. The enemy knows all our weak spots though he does not know everything, cannot be everywhere and is not all powerful. Only You God are all those things and Lord of all! Sometimes it is just life that trips us up and the tempter needs do nothing!

In almost every employment I have had, there has been something that has tested me. A person who seemed to make life difficult for no reason or did not like me. A part of the job I disliked and always had to do. A situation that made me nervous or not prepared . . . Opportunities to get angry, be negative or be as unpleasant?

Joseph sets us a good example and speaks out his truth, “How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?” Yes he would be betraying his boss but much worse than that he would be sinning against You, God. That was what mattered most. It cost Joseph his position and he was unjustly accused and found guilty. He seemed to know it was better to stick with You God than step off the straight and narrow (Matthew 7:14). Lead us not into temptation Lord God, and when temptation comes to us help us go round it, over it and not into it.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Love this. Mat Maher indulges in the first verse of the hymn that inspired his modern take on it.

What a friend we have in Jesus,
all our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
everything to God in prayer!
O what peace we often forfeit,
O what needless pain we bear,
all because we do not carry
everything to God in prayer!

Everybody has trials and temptations
Everybody knows heart break, isolation
But we can lay our burdens down
Lay our burdens down

What a friend we have in Jesus
East to west my sins are gone
I see grace on every horizon
And forever and ever
His heart is my home

Everybody has fears, everybody got worries
Everybody knows sorrow, devastation
But we can lay our burdens down
Lay our burdens down

Chorus

No more betrayal, for He is faithful
He fills me up and my cup runneth over
No more betrayal, for He is faithful
How He has proven it over and over

No more betrayal, for He is faithful
He fills me up and my cup runneth over
No more betrayal, for He is faithful
How He has proven it over and over

Chorus Twice
