And he cried out with a loud voice, 34 saying, “Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!” 35 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him in their midst, it came out of him and did not hurt him. “ Luke 4:23-35 NKJV

Lord God Almighty,

Jesus is in Nazareth, He has just read the scroll in the Temple and then taken the seat reserved, through all their history, for the returning Messiah. The only seat in the inner Temple I think. They were happy to greet the returning celebrity but not when He revealed Himself as something more than just a teacher. There was nothing He would do to change their minds, You give freewill Lord God, and so in the confusion of being thrown out of the city, down a cliff, he walked safely away unseen.

I have found many people open to talking about Jesus the good Shepherd, teacher, friend of little children, who can be prayed to for help. But often the problem comes when sharing that Jesus was You, is You, God amongst us. God made man who walked among us. Who now, through Your Spirit is still with us. More than a good man.

Jesus never forced understanding even on those he would have known from His hometown. He graciously allowed them to put Him out with no recourse to getting His own back. It reminds me of when a group of young men called Elisha baldhead and bears came and killed them. Elisha was not personally offended by the name but that the area, these youths, had no respect for You God. He dealt with them. Jesus dealt with unbelief a different way. He gave time to repent and at the cross a way of escaping the curse. Thank You God. Father Son and Holy Spirit, that Jesus was truly and properly God and truly and properly man. And by Your Spirit You rule in my heart.

“Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name when they saw the signs which He did. 24 But Jesus did not commit Himself to them, because He knew all men, 25 and had no need that anyone should testify of man, for He knew what was in man.” John 2:23-25 NKJV

“There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. 2 This man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.” 3 Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” ” John 3:1-3 NKJV

Lord God and Father,

Early on in Jesus ministry and we see Jesus as He is. He does not try styles and change his way of working to be more effective or successful. He does not need gimmicks or to plan how he reacts. He is Who He is always and He displays Your nature in all He does all His life. I love seeing the way he interacts with those he meets. He knows those who just want the miracles and not anything to do with where they come from or who is doing them. He doesn’t tell Nicodemus to just believe, he listens to what Nicodemus is struggling to understand, and leads him to the truth. He knows what the woman at the well really needs and doesn’t try to beat her up for her sin or blind her with scripture. He gives her the way to life and a new start.

Jesus understood man, he met every one where they were and met their needs. He never forced Himself upon them. He even asked the man at the Sheep Gate pool, Bethesda, if he would like to be well. Father You are still the same today.

Those of us who have met Your risen Son, know that You have not changed. You are still willing to talk us through scripture if we are willing to learn. You still give us life and refreshment if we choose Your way. You give us so many opportunities to learn and You are always there to respond to our slightest prayer and the whisper of our hearts.

An old hymn but it has just kept running through my mind – since I listened to it a few days ago. It literally keeps flowing on in endless song. How can I keep from singing.

God and Father,

It is a shock to me that in my mind I had put the first sign (miracle) of the water to wine as coming before Jesus started His ministry. Perhaps because Jesus himself says it is not His time yet? But clearly Jesus has already called some of His disciples and they were following Him. Jesus responds to His mother with grace and has mercy on the hosts of the wedding. He does it all quietly. His mother knows and there is another verse I seem to have skipped over, that his disciples must have seen and believed, and it manifested His glory. It manifested: showed, revealed, or made something clear through sign, action, or physical appearance. They witnessed it with their own eyes. I had not pictured them being there. But they were.

There are so many experiences that we have had Father that have assured us of Your love, provision and guidance in our lives. We look back and cannot deny them. And we know that new believers can be encouraged by our testimony but, they need their own, seeing is believing, moments. We pray that You will open hearts and minds to see Your miracles at work just as the disciples did in their early days. And give us faith to go on expecting and seeing You call new disciples. As well as the privilege of serving You.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
