“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy he gave us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, that is, into an inheritance imperishable, undefiled, and unfading. It is reserved in heaven for you, who by God’s power are protected through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. ”
1 Peter 1:3-5 NET

God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

Some of us are not naturally joyful all the time or even some of the time. We are not sad or depressed just not overtly joyful. And there are times when someone else’s joy can be irritating or even inappropriate. Yet here is Peter writing to people going through terrible trials starting off with a joyful burst of praise! Because he knows from personal experience that it is important never to forget and stand in the truth that Jesus is the source of our hope and joy and the answer to our questions.

He gives us, in three verses, a wide angle and aerial view of what You, God have done for us and then a close up view of what You provides. A living hope. Rounding off with the promised future.

Nearly everything we do is motivated by some hope somewhere down the line. Big hopes, small or insignificant hopes. We hope that we will be successful, that the preacher won’t go on too long. We hope the best for our children, grandchildren and friends. We hope we can think of something for diner. We hope we will remember what we need to do today! Hope is a part of being human. But, nothing can give us a living hope but You.

It is a living sure hope (1:3), an imperishable eternal hope (1:4) and a protected enduring hope (1:5). We may be disappointed in this life but we have a living , sure, imperishable, and enduring hope of our inheritance in Christ now and throughout eternity. Keep that living hope burning alive and bright in our hearts every day, come what may.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Perhaps one to listen to and enjoy the words. Or just read with thanksgiving. Their are comments about it by the author underneath the lyrics.

How great the chasm that lay between us
How high the mountain I could not climb
In desperation, I turned to heaven
And spoke your name into the night
Then through the darkness
Your loving kindness
Tore through the shadows of my soul
The work is finished, the end is written
Jesus Christ, my living hope

Who could imagine so great a mercy?
What heart could fathom such boundless grace?
The God of ages stepped down from glory
To wear my sin and bear my shame
The cross has spoken, I am forgiven
The king of kings calls me His own
Beautiful saviour, I’m yours forever
Jesus Christ, my living hope

Hallelujah, praise the one who set me free
Hallelujah, death has lost its grip on me
You have broken every chain
There’s salvation in your name
Jesus Christ, my living hope
(repeat)

Then came the morning that sealed the promise
Your buried body began to breathe
Out of the silence, the roaring lion
Declared the grave has no claim on me
(Repeat)
Jesus Yours is the victory

Hallelujah, praise the one who set me free
Hallelujah, death has lost its grip on me
You have broken every chain
There’s salvation in your name
Jesus Christ, my living hope
(Repeat)

Phil Wickham, the author of this song, spoke about what it meant to him.
He said, “God has rescued us from a place that we could never have rescued ourselves. Our future was death, but Jesus came in and brought life – a living hope – into our souls and into our lives. I love singing the truth of ‘Living Hope,’ and this song has already become an anthem at both of the churches where we lead worship. I hope anybody who gets to hear it not only sings along, but their hearts’ cling to it as well.”

“As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love. If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love. These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full.” John 15:9-11 NKJV

God of joy,

Thank you that You promised that Your joy would remain with and in us because of Jesus and Your Holy Spirit. We cannot work up joy, we cannot force it, we cannot manipulate it. Sometimes it appears we have run flat out of it! But we need it, not over the top but to bring appreciation of life.. Then we need to wait and not despair for, ‘Joy cometh in the morning’ (Psalm 30:5). The Psalmist knew to hang on. Then there are those occasions when You enable us to have our spirits raised by joy.

.Joy, but not the kind of happiness that needs things or occasions to buy or provide it. That kind passes fast and is hard to make happen again. We need Your fruit of joy that makes us smile within. The joy that wells up in us and makes us laugh and we cant always remember what about but we feel good. The overwhelming joy, when we see something simple yet beautiful that You, Lord, have made.

The gift of joy that enables us to keep the sparkle in our eyes and heart. Help us to share Your loving joy not just cheer someone up and leave them feeling better than when we found them. Help us, even when we feel down, know Your joy is still ours and waiting to be reawakened.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Joy is in this place- here!

Oh I could sing unending songs
Of how you saved my soul
Well I could dance a thousand miles
Because of your great love.

My heart is bursting Lord
To tell of all you’ve done
Of how you changed my life
And wiped away the past
I wanna shout it out
From every roof top sing
For now I know that God
Is for me not against me

Everybody’s singing now Cos we’re so happy
Everybody’s dancing now Cos we’re so happy
If only we could see your face
And see you smiling over us
And unseen angels celebrate
For joy is in this place!

Lyrics by Martin Smith 1994.

According to Martin, the song wrote itself in about five minutes. It was just a little ditty. He wrote it at church. He didn’t think it was more than a little ditty. Not the kind of song people would say was amazing worship. He still does not really think it is. But that song, that moment, changed his life.

“For by grace you are saved through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God; it is not from works, so that no one can boast. For we are his creative work, having been created in Christ Jesus for good works that God prepared beforehand so we can do them.” Ephesians 2:8-10 NET

God of grace,

We could spend all day just talking about grace . . . but today I was challenged by verse 10. We are Your creative work – the Authorised version says we are Your workmanship! Like a sculpture or a work of art created not just by a brilliant artist but the Giver of life. And You breathed it into us!

For a purpose. You give our lives meaning and purpose. We were created and are given opportunity to have faith, to do good works, prepared beforehand not at the last minute! The opportunities You give us to respond in Your love. Whether that means in a family setting, in a mission setting, in an everyday setting. You put something before us that we can do for good in Your name. A good word, a good deed, a good action in response to Jesus, words, deeds and action.

Sometimes our lives may look random, challenging and not as good as someone else who is doing great things. Help us just to see You do not measure by those means. We are all individual with individual lives and opportunities and gifts. You placed us just where You wanted us – even from our mothers wombs. (Psalm 139). Help us to respond when we can and where we can as You would.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

God of grace,

For family, friends, neighbours, be with them in their ups and downs and meet their needs.
For our church family, ministers and all who serve, give them Your inner strength and faith..
For all the Royal family. Charles ongoing treatment. Kates full recovery. Healing of rifts.
For our local councillors and those who will be up for election.
For our government and MPs and their families. Raise up and bring down the right people.
For an end to the war in Ukraine. Change Russia to end their attack.
For Gaza an end to killing. Bombard them with Your peace and a way to negotiation..
For changes in Yemen, Myanmar, North Korea, Chine, Sudan, Syria and other countries where there is war, aggression, oppression, dictatorship, slavery.
For those who run food banks and those who need them..
For overseas relief agencies and medical support.
For those who need to know their God given purpose in this life and have all they need to fulfil it.
For us to have a day full of opportunities to be kind and good and helpful.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
