“Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel forty years. 31 Then Solomon rested with his fathers, and was buried in the City of David his father. And Rehoboam his son reigned in his place.” 1 Chronicles 9:30-31

“And Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had gone to Shechem to make him king. So it happened, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard it (he was still in Egypt, for he had fled from the presence of King Solomon and had been dwelling in Egypt), that they sent and called him. Then Jeroboam and the whole assembly of Israel came and spoke to Rehoboam, saying, “Your father made our yoke heavy; now therefore, lighten the burdensome service of your father, and his heavy yoke which he put on us, and we will serve you.”So he said to them, “Depart for three days, then come back to me.” And the people departed. Then King Rehoboam consulted the elders who stood before his father Solomon while he still lived, and he said, “How do you advise me to answer these people?” And they spoke to him, saying, “If you will be a servant to these people today, and serve them, and answer them, and speak good words to them, then they will be your servants forever.”But he rejected the advice which the elders had given him and consulted the young men who had grown up with him, who stood before him. And he said to them, “What advice do you give? How should we answer this people who have spoken to me, saying, ‘Lighten the yoke which your father put on us’?”10 Then the young men who had grown up with him spoke to him, saying, “Thus you should speak to this people who have spoken to you, saying, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy, but you make it lighter on us’—thus you shall say to them: ‘My little finger shall be thicker than my father’s waist!”” 1 Kings 17:1-10 NKJV

Father God,

It looks like it was Rehoboams bad choices that led to the rebellion and splitting of the Kingdom into two. But from yesterday we can see that decay and rot had been setting in gradually. The great Solomon’s wisdom had been led astray and the Israelites were not following You together under good leadership. Rehoboam certainly did not have the wisdom of his father as we see he easily is led into foolishness by his young peers.

A gradual decay that leaves opportunity for mischief by others and a lack of present wisdom. Father sometimes it is just complacency that sets in. When life is OK the routine is not challenging. Perhaps the enemy, that old liar, does not have to tempt us because we are not threatening? (1 Peter 5:8).

To shake off complacency and break the ongoing cycle, I read, requires active disruption of routine and intentional exposure to discomfort. Wow. So if I am too comfortable and it is easy, I am too comfortable and it is too easy? Sometimes You just give us a season of rest. Help us to know the difference and to be able to shake of dull sloth to really see if we are fully awake to You Father, Your Son, Your Holy Spirit. Particularly as we approach celebration of the outpouring of Your Holy Spirit at Pentecost.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen

Two to choose from today.

1. Thomas Ken wrote this as a morning hymn to challenge for the day ahead. But he was also was a man of conscience and independent mind and not complacent. He challenged King Charles II when he visited Winchester with his mistress, the famous actress Nell Gwynne. Thomas was asked to provide lodging for her.So he quickly declared his house under repair and had a builder take off the roof! Later as a Bishop Ken refused to read King James II’s Declaration of Indulgence in the churches, and was briefly imprisoned in the Tower of London. A few years later he refused to swear allegiance to King William and lost his bishopric.

Awake, my soul, and with the sun
thy daily stage of duty run;
shake off dull sloth, and early rise
to pay thy morning sacrifice.

 Redeem thy misspent time that’s past,
and live this day as if thy last;
improve thy talent with due care;
for the great day thyself prepare.

Let all thy converse be sincere,
thy conscience as the noon-day clear;
think how all-seeing God thy ways
and all thy secret thoughts surveys.

Awake, awake, ye heavenly choir
May your devotion me inspire
May I like You my age may spend
Like You may on my God attend.

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
praise Him all creatures here below;
praise Him above, ye heavenly host;
praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

“Then the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying, “When Pharaoh speaks to you, saying, ‘Show a miracle for yourselves,’ then you shall say to Aaron, ‘Take your rod and cast it before Pharaoh, and let it become a serpent.’ ” 10 So Moses and Aaron went in to Pharaoh, and they did so, just as the Lord commanded. And Aaron cast down his rod before Pharaoh and before his servants, and it became a serpent. 11 But Pharaoh also called the wise men and the  sorcerers; so the magicians of Egypt, they also did in like manner with their enchantments. 12 For every man threw down his rod, and they became serpents. But Aaron’s rod swallowed up their rods. 13 And Pharaoh’s heart grew hard, and he did not heed them, as the Lord had said.” Exodus 7:8-18 NKJV

God of Gods,

Men have always wanted to be divine and the Pharos’s were well known for making themselves God’s as well as rulers. Men have always wanted to appear above mere mortals. Moses had been warned about Pharoah not listening. But it must have come as a shock when his sorcerers could match his miracles! We do have an enemy who tempted Jesus in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11). But he is not God. He is limited in power, knowledge and presence. And with the plagues we see the sorcerers can only replicate the first.

The ten plagues: River turned to blood, Frogs, Lice (or gnats), Flies, Livestock, Boils, Hail, Locusts, Darkness, Death of the firstborn.

And Moses was able to ensure that the plagues did not trouble the Israelites (Exodus 8:22). God, You were in the detail. Surely this must have encouraged the Israelites that You were protecting them. Pharoah must have been a hard man or perhaps he truly believed Moses would not get the better of him. Pride? We may not suffer plagues but we do not always have it smooth! Sometimes we try to rely on our own strength and forget to turn and trust in You. Help us to keep our hearts soft to hear You and willing to obey. Even in just the little things. And the last plague reminds us of Jesus. Your first Son, Your only Son who gave His life to save us.

In Jesus name we pray and give thanks, Amen.

Soften my heart, Lord
Soften my heart

“Then Moses went down to the people and repeated all the instructions and regulations the Lord had given him. All the people answered with one voice, “We will do everything the Lord has commanded.” Then Moses carefully wrote down all the Lord’s instructions. Early the next morning Moses got up and built an altar at the foot of the mountain. He also set up twelve pillars, one for each of the twelve tribes of Israel. Then he sent some of the young Israelite men to present burnt offerings and to sacrifice bulls as peace offerings to the Lord. Moses drained half the blood from these animals into basins. The other half he splattered against the altar.

Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read it aloud to the people. Again they all responded, “We will do everything the Lord has commanded. We will obey.” Then Moses took the blood from the basins and splattered it over the people, declaring, “Look, this blood confirms the covenant the Lord has made with you in giving you these instructions.”” Exodus 24:1-8 NLT

Lord of the Covenant,

Moses seems to do a lot of going up and down the mountain at this time getting all the instructions for behaviour and property and social responsibility from You Lord. And then a covenant is drawn up, an agreement, a legal contract. And all 12 tribes agreed to keep Your covenant and You would be their all in all God. Not sure I would like to be splattered with blood and it would not have gone on all of them just the front ones representative of the whole. The Lord covered their sins with the blood of sacrifices so they could come before Him.

Jesus at the last supper took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.” (Matthew 26:27). Jesus blood completely forgives all our sin. He was the only pure sacrifice which could appease You, God. His blood was not sprinkled on us it was poured out for us. Today if we can get to worship, if we can take communion or draw into the presence of You, God or at home – help us to give thanks for sin forgiven. And know that it is not rituals that save us but a relationship with You through the blood of Jesus. And as we come to You, come afresh to us and soften our hearts Lord.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
