“Then Elijah said to him (Elisha), “Stay here, please, for the Lord has sent me on to the Jordan.” But he said, “As the Lord lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you!” So the two of them went on. And fifty men of the sons of the prophets went and stood facing them at a distance, while the two of them stood by the Jordan. Now Elijah took his mantle, rolled it up, and struck the water; and it was divided this way and that, so that the two of them crossed over on dry ground. And so it was, when they had crossed over, that Elijah said to Elisha, “Ask! What may I do for you, before I am taken away from you?” Elisha said, “Please let a double portion of your spirit be upon me.” 10 So he said, “You have asked a hard thing. Nevertheless, if you see me when I am taken from you, it shall be so for you; but if not, it shall not be so.” 11 Then it happened, as they continued on and talked, that suddenly a chariot of fire appeared with horses of fire, and separated the two of them; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. 12 And Elisha saw it, and he cried out, “My father, my father, the chariot of Israel and its horsemen!” So he saw him no more. And he took hold of his own clothes and tore them into two pieces. 13 He also took up the mantle of Elijah that had fallen from him, and went back and stood by the bank of the Jordan. 14 Then he took the mantle of Elijah that had fallen from him, and struck the water, and said, “Where is the Lord God of Elijah?” And when he also had struck the water, it was divided this way and that; and Elisha crossed over.” 2 Kings 2:6-14 NKJV

Omnipotent God,

You answered the prayer of Elisha. It reminds me of when Elijah found Elisha ploughing with oxen and threw his mantle over him and called him his successor (1 Kings 19:19). Humble beginnings. Elijah, a farmer, perhaps never felt quite worthy, not having been brought up as a prophet or serving you. Perhaps he did not feel good enough or with any abilities. But he was brave and asked for Your anointing, the anointing Elijah had. Not for personal gain, we see his life spent in Your service. You enabled Elisha to see Elijah leave and become a mighty man of God, Your man.

Peter recognises that Simon desired the Holy Spirit for his own gain and challenged him to repent (Acts8:18-22). Paul warns against those who want to profit from preaching (1 Timothy 6:3-5) but believers preachers should be supported so they can serve God (2 Timothy 5:17-18). Paul himself was grateful for those who provided for him but he never took advantage (Philippians 4:14).

Sometimes I wonder that You could ever use me but then I remember You are God and generous and kind and allow me to help You! I may never see fiery chariots or part a river but I desire to serve joyfully and with an expectation of the miraculous. May we too be mighty men and women of God, for You in our own way with Your miraculous power.

In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

Worship Monday 1st June 2026
A hymn for Elijah calling down fire from heaven but it is still good for t0day and Pentecost is not just one day . . .

Thou Christ of burning, cleansing flame,
Send the fire!
Thy blood-bought gift today we claim,
Send the fire!
Look down and see this waiting host,
Give us the promised Holy Ghost,
We want another Pentecost,
Send the fire!

God of Elijah, hear our cry:
Send the fire!
To make us fit to live or die,
Send the fire!
To burn up every trace of sin,
To bring the light and glory in,
The revolution now begin,
Send the fire!

‘Tis fire we want, for fire we plead,
Send the fire!
The fire will meet our every need,
Send the fire!
For strength to ever do the right,
For grace to conquer in the fight,
For power to walk the world in white,
Send the fire!

To make our weak hearts strong and brave,
Send the fire!
To live a dying world to save,
Send the fire!
O see us on thy altar lay
Our lives, our all, this very day,
To crown the offering now we pray,
Send the fire!

Repeat last verse . . .

“Then Jehoshaphat his son reigned in his place, and strengthened himself against Israel. And he placed troops in all the fortified cities of Judah, and set garrisons in the land of Judah and in the cities of Ephraim which Asa his father had taken. Now the Lord was with Jehoshaphat, because he walked in the former ways of his father David; he did not seek the Baals, but sought the God of his father, and walked in His commandments and not according to the acts of Israel. Therefore the Lord established the kingdom in his hand; and all Judah gave presents to Jehoshaphat, and he had riches and honor in abundance. And his heart took delight in the ways of the Lord; moreover he removed the high places and wooden images from Judah. Also in the third year of his reign he sent his leaders, Ben-Hail, Obadiah, Zechariah, Nethanel, and Michaiah, to teach in the cities of Judah. And with them he sent Levites: Shemaiah, Nethaniah, Zebadiah, Asahel, Shemiramoth, Jehonathan, Adonijah, Tobijah, and Tobadonijah—the Levites; and with them Elishama and Jehoram, the priests. So they taught in Judah, and had the Book of the Law of the Lord with them; they went throughout all the cities of Judah and taught the people. 10 And the fear of the Lord fell on all the kingdoms of the lands that were around Judah, so that they did not make war against Jehoshaphat.” 2 Chronicles 17:1-10 NKJV

Lord God,

Jehoshaphat. He wisely used his military leadership to strategically place garrisons to protect Judah from Israel. He set an example of spiritual leadership by walking in Your commandments. He removed the temptation of the high places and destroyed wooden images of idolatry. He dispatched teams made up of leaders, Levites and priests to educate those in the cities about the Law of the Lord.

All great things. Did he do it to plan for peace? To plan for a well ordered nation together in faith? To remove the double mindedness of professing faith in God and having idols scattered across the land? To score points with You God?

The Chroniclers tell us that his heart took delight in the ways of the Lord. He delighted in pleasing You God. I can think of nothing better than to think about that. Does my heart and my actions show delight in Your ways?

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Lyrics: Reuben Timothy Morgan

Saturday 30th May 2026

“And it came to pass after these things that Naboth the Jezreelite had a vineyard which was in Jezreel, next to the palace of Ahab king of Samaria. So Ahab spoke to Naboth, saying, “Give me your vineyard, that I may have it for a vegetable garden, because it is near, next to my house; and for it I will give you a vineyard better than it. Or, if it seems good to you, I will give you its worth in money.” But Naboth said to Ahab, “The Lord forbid that I should give the inheritance of my fathers to you!”So Ahab went into his house sullen and displeased because of the word which Naboth the Jezreelite had spoken to him; for he had said, “I will not give you the inheritance of my fathers.” And he lay down on his bed, and turned away his face, and would eat no food. But Jezebel his wife came to him, and said to him, “Why is your spirit so sullen that you eat no food?” He said to her, “Because I spoke to Naboth the Jezreelite, and said to him, ‘Give me your vineyard for money; or else, if it pleases you, I will give you another vineyard for it.’ And he answered, ‘I will not give you my vineyard.’ ” Then Jezebel his wife said to him, “You now exercise authority over Israel! Arise, eat food, and let your heart be cheerful; I will give you the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite.”” 1 Kings 21:1-5 NKJV

God of truth,

A fair offer for real estate but a valid reason for refusal. But the offer was underwritten with covetousness and followed by rejection which brought on profound self pity and a sulk. So Ahab’s wife not wanting to put up with his sulk and who felt he was above the law decided to be his sinful backbone. Perhaps he knew she would sort it for her? So whose was the greater sin? His manipulation of her if it was that? Or hers for organising a murder to rid him of his sulk. Wrong question!

It all started because Ahab coveted. Was jealous of a small vineyard near his home and could not get over it. The tenth of God’s commandments and after murder and stealing and lying. But it can quickly lead to the others.

Covetousness in all forms is ugly and You, Lord God, counter it with the command to love our neighbour. And who is our neighbour? The person with a better allotment, the one who has a newer car, an attractive spouse? A smaller nose, a closer family, better health or more holidays? Who knows what catches us unawares. Help me count my blessings till there is no room for anything else. I will still need or want – but I can ask You and leave my requests with You, where they will not lead me into temptation.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

More beautiful worship from Rend Collective. New take on count your blessings.

I was blind, now I’m seeing in color
I was dead, now I’m living forever
I had failed, but You were my Redeemer
I’ve been blessed beyond all measure

I was lost, now I’m found by the Father
I’ve been changed from a ruin to treasure
I’ve been given a hope and a future
I’ve been blessed beyond all measure

I am counting every blessing, counting every blessing
Letting go and trusting when I cannot see
I am counting every blessing, counting every blessing
Surely every season You are good to me

Oh oh oh oh, You are good to me
Oh oh oh oh, You are good to me

You were there in the valley of shadows
You were there in the depth of my sorrows
You’re my strength, my hope for tomorrow
I’ve been blessed beyond all measure

I am counting every blessing, counting every blessing
Letting go and trusting when I cannot see
I am counting every blessing, counting every blessing
Surely every season You are good to me

Surely Your goodness pursues me
Surely Your heart is still for me
I will remember Your mercies all my days
Through every storm and gale

I am counting every blessing, counting every blessing
Letting go and trusting when I cannot see
I am counting every blessing, counting every blessing
Surely every season You are good to me

Oh oh oh oh, You are good to me
Oh oh oh oh, You are good to me
