“Then King Nebuchadnezzar fell on his face, prostrate before Daniel, and commanded that they should present an offering and incense to him. 47 The king answered Daniel, and said, “Truly your God is the God of gods, the Lord of kings, and a revealer of secrets, since you could reveal this secret.” 48 Then the king promoted Daniel and gave him many great gifts; and he made him ruler over the whole province of Babylon, and chief administrator over all the wise men of Babylon. 49 Also Daniel petitioned the king, and he set Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego over the affairs of the province of Babylon; but Daniel sat in the gate of the king.” Daniel 2:46-49 NKJV

“Nebuchadnezzar the king made an image of gold, whose height was sixty cubits and its width six cubits. He set it up in the plain of Dura, in the province of Babylon . . . 4 Then a herald cried aloud: “To you it is commanded, O peoples, nations, and languages, 5 that at the time you hear the sound of the horn, flute, harp, lyre, and psaltery, in symphony with all kinds of music, you shall fall down and worship the gold image that King Nebuchadnezzar has set up; 6 and whoever does not fall down and worship shall be cast immediately into the midst of a burning fiery furnace.” Daniel 3:1,4-6 NKJV

God who only is worthy of worship,

The end of Daniel chapter two we see Nebuchadnezzar bowing in worship to You God. He calls You, “the God of gods, the Lord of kings, and a revealer of secrets”. The very next verse Daniel 3:1 he is making a huge gold image of himself to be worshipped. Not lifesize but approximately 90 ft x 9 ft or 27.4 x 2.75 meters give or take a bit. St Mary’s church Brecon steeple is 90 feet high to put it into perspective.

There are not many verses between Nebuchadnezzar promoting Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, to having them thrown into the fiery furnace for not worshipping his image. Killing his own guards in the process (Daniel 3:22). A fourth man in the furnace (Daniel 3:25) and again Nebuchadnezzar is forced to acknowledge You God.

Many of us do not have such vivid proof of You, God. Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego found that keeping the first commandment can put You in mortal danger, but You were worthy of their trust! Nebuchadnezzars faith is like a pendulum Swinging from from You, God to his own vainglory. My faith is nowhere near perfect but like Daniel and his friends I choose You as my God. I pray I will not be put to the test as they were. And Lord, keep safe those who must worship in secret or who stand up and lose their lives today.*

Friday 27th February 2026

“For the Lord your God is the God of gods and Lord of lords. He is the great God, the mighty and awesome God, who shows no partiality and cannot be bribed. 18 He ensures that orphans and widows receive justice. He shows love to the foreigners living among you and gives them food and clothing. 19 So you, too, must show love to foreigners, for you yourselves were once foreigners in the land of Egypt. 20 You must fear the Lord your God and worship him and cling to him. Your oaths must be in his name alone. 21 He alone is your God, the only one who is worthy of your praise, the one who has done these mighty miracles that you have seen with your own eyes. 22 When your ancestors went down into Egypt, there were only seventy of them. But now the Lord your God has made you as numerous as the stars in the sky!” Deuteronomy 10:17-22 NLT

God of Gods and Lord of Lords,

Your Son, Jesus spoke these words in the sermon on the mount, “Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished. ” (Matthew 5:17,18). When we read Moses, Your prophets words, we see truth mirrored exactly. You are eternally God of Gods, Lord of Lords. You show no partiality and cannot be bribed. You love each one of us. And just as Your people Israel could come freely and ask and receive from You now we can because of Jesus.

Now and again I need reminding that You have not changed God. You are not like an earthly parent who can be cajoled or persuaded to do what I want to make me happy. You God have not changed. You still cannot tolerate sin and will only do what is right and according to Your plan. It is Jesus that removes the punishment of sin and who enables us to freely approach You to ask for our needs in prayer.

It is good to remember also because it reminds me You are an awesome, almighty, all powerful, larger than the universe, bigger than my imagination, the one and only God of all. And I can know You and receive Your love – because of Jesus. I will bow my knee, my heart and my will and worship You.

Thursday 21st August 2025

The king was furious when he heard this, and he ordered that all the wise men of Babylon be executed. 13 And because of the king’s decree, men were sent to find and kill Daniel and his friends. 14 When Arioch, the commander of the king’s guard, came to kill them, Daniel handled the situation with wisdom and discretion. 15 He asked Arioch, “Why has the king issued such a harsh decree?” So Arioch told him all that had happened. 16 Daniel went at once to see the king and requested more time to tell the king what the dream meant. 17 Then Daniel went home and told his friends Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah what had happened. 18 He urged them to ask the God of heaven to show them his mercy by telling them the secret, so they would not be executed along with the other wise men of Babylon. 19 That night the secret was revealed to Daniel in a vision. Then Daniel praised the God of heaven. 20 He said,

“Praise the name of God forever and ever, for he has all wisdom and power. 21 He controls the course of world events; he removes kings and sets up other kings. He gives wisdom to the wise
and knowledge to the scholars. 22 He reveals deep and mysterious things and knows what lies hidden in darkness, though he is surrounded by light.23 I thank and praise you, God of my ancestors, for you have given me wisdom and strength. You have told me what we asked of you
and revealed to us what the king demanded.” Daniel 2:12-23 NLT

God of our ancestors,

Sometimes we have to be in a very tight corner before we pray and ask others to pray as if our lives depended on it! Daniel did not care who got the answer because otherwise they would all die! And he was open to God speaking. Because of his willingness he was able to approach the king and settle the perilous situation. And he takes none of the glory for himself. He shakes it off by bursting into praise for You, God who saved them..

When we cannot see the way forward, drive us to our knees for an answer and to not be worried about how or who it will come through. Then keep us ready to sing Your praises, so eyes are directed to You we do not take any of Your glory.

Thank You for those who have gone to other countries, not as captives, but willingly to witness to You and live Godly lives to show Your wisdom and strength through their witness. Watch over them and give them revelation and the understanding for their own situations. Not forgetting those of us called to reveal You in our own country. We need Your wisdom, revelation and understanding for our own times.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

We had this in March perhaps this is why it came instantly to mind as I read Daniel.
