“Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?” And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden; but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ” Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings. 8 And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. Then the Lord God called to Adam and said to him, “Where are you?”” Genesis 3:1-9 NKJV

God who seeks us,

The serpent, which was a beast of the field You Lord God had made, was the first of creation to rebel. I had not noticed that before. He told lies and half lies.

Jesus warned us that offences (stumbling blocks) would come and woe to him through whom they come (Luke 17:1). We long to see the liar silenced. But we cannot use that as an excuse. We have choice. Temptation is not temptation when it is something we are not interested in. And I have noticed it never gives the reward it promises. Drug addicts tell me that after the first high they are always chasing it and it is never as good they need more and more. Temptation is never the reward it promises. And that little voice lies, just a little won’t matter, it won’t hurt anyone.

“Where are You?” You God ask, when You knew exactly where they were. You needed them to own up. Of course they blamed the serpent. But he had not eaten . . . the serpent still has freedom of speech and we need to remember we are never above temptation. Best to start the day with, “Here I am Lord”. And turn to You when temptation whispers in my ear. So Your voice, like the sound of many waters (Revelation 14:2), can drowned it out! And if I succumb? Not try to hide from You, My Saviour.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Sometimes a traditional hymn says it like it is. And if we say we are without sin we deceive ourselves.

According to the author, this song came instantaneously while studying “Theory” It is not clear what he meant by “Theory” or what he was studying. But he says when the whole idea, words and music, came to him, he put aside his theoretical work and jotted down this song as fast as the pen could move.

Yield not to temptation,
For yielding is sin;
Each vict’ry will help you,
Some other to win;
Fight valiantly onward,
Evil passions subdue;
Look ever to Jesus,
He will carry you through.

Shun evil companions,
Bad language disdain;
God’s name hold in rev’rence,
Nor take it in vain;
Be thoughtful and earnest,
Kindhearted and true;
Look ever to Jesus,
He will carry you through.

To him that o’ercometh,
God giveth a crown;
Through faith we will conquer,
Though often cast down;
He who is our Saviour,
Our strength will renew;
Look ever to Jesus,
He will carry you through.

Ask the Saviour to help you,
Comfort, strengthen and keep you;
He is willing to aid you,
He will carry you through.

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day.” Genesis 1:1-5 NKJV

God of Creation,

We slipped over into 2026 in going through the Bible in a Year in 2025. I found it difficult God rushing through and selecting where to pause . . . so here we are starting over again this year but using the base of the New King James Version with endless places we jumped over last year!

Your Bible, Lord God, in the Old Testament, is a Chronicle of Your chosen nation, Israel. The beginning books we believe were written by Moses. But there is also the time written about before Abraham. When there was no one to know what happened. Scientists can now date the ages of man, the stone age, the bronze age etc. Before the development of the written language. No-one to write then about the dinosaurs, God?

The creation of our world and mankind does take a leap of faith God, but I am encouraged. Scientists agree with the order of creation even though the writer lived way before scientists proved it. Water and light are essential for life. I am encouraged that the writer did not pretend to know all the details and did not attempt dates. For me admitting that I do not know it all is part of my faith.

So I can accept the story of creation as the inspiration of God to man. It introduces You, the One God, man’s creation, man’s rebellion and sin. It records secular and sacred history and their meeting at the cross. Learning about the ages of man does not shake my faith but gives me a sense of awesome wonder. Because I know that at the beginning was You, God. And You remain faithful to Your plan through the thousands of years before Abraham. And Genesis is the tip of my understanding of You my Creator God and the universe and the coming of Jesus.

In Jesus name we give thanks and pray, Amen.

This was the song used by NASA to wake up Discovery astronaut Michael Fossum.

Lord of all creation
Lord of water, earth and sky
The heavens are your Tabernacle
Glory to the Lord on high

God of wonders beyond our galaxy
You are holy, holy
The universe declares Your majesty
You are holy, holy

Lord of heaven and earth
Lord of heaven and earth

So early in the morning
I will celebrate the light
As I stumble in the darkness
I will call your name by night

Chorus

Hallelujah! To the Lord of heaven and earth
Hallelujah! To the Lord of heaven and earth
Hallelujah! To the Lord of heaven and earth
Holy, Holy, holy, holy.

God of wonders beyond our galaxy
You are holy, holy
Precious Lord, reveal Your heart to me
Father, holy, holy (Lord God Almighty)
The universe declares Your majesty (You are holy)
You are holy (yes you are), holy (holy You are)
Holy (Jesus saves), holy

Hallelujah! To the Lord of heaven and earth . . . .repeat . . .

Sunday 4th January 2026

 “Blessed are those who wash their robes. They will be permitted to enter through the gates of the city and eat the fruit from the tree of life. 15 Outside the city are the dogs—the sorcerers, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idol worshipers, and all who love to live a lie. 16 “I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this message for the churches. I am both the source of David and the heir to his throne. I am the bright morning star.” 17 The Spirit and the bride say, “Come.” Let anyone who hears this say, “Come.” Let anyone who is thirsty come. Let anyone who desires drink freely from the water of life. 18 And I solemnly declare to everyone who hears the words of prophecy written in this book: If anyone adds anything to what is written here, God will add to that person the plagues described in this book. 19 And if anyone removes any of the words from this book of prophecy, God will remove that person’s share in the tree of life and in the holy city that are described in this book. 20 He who is the faithful witness to all these things says, “Yes, I am coming soon!” Amen! Come, Lord Jesus! 21 May the grace of the Lord Jesus be with God’s holy people.” Revelation 22:14-21 NLT

Dear Lord and Father,

Nowadays we wash in lots of ways, some still at the river, some in showers with gel, some in baths with soaks and some still even use soap. At the end of the Bible we are reminded of its central message. Salvation. Cleansing of sin. And there is no other way but by the blood of Jesus cleansing our hearts. Yes, some hymns have gone out of favour because the language is less acceptable to today. Hymns like,
There is a fountain filled with blood
Drawn from Immanuel’s veins;
And sinners, plunged beneath that flood,
Lose all their guilty stains:

Today a new generation may see it as being gory and perhaps it does sound so and perhaps it is more acceptable to sing about salvation through the cross of Jesus. Then invite them then to know Him through His death and resurrection. I understand why people seeking to know Jesus may find it a bit overwhelming even confusing Father, to think about plunging into His blood. We need to find ways to reach new generations. And the box design may differ but the contents remain the same! As the end of the Bible shows, its all about You, Jesus, the bright and morning star, the giver of life, the water of life and the faithful witness. We must not take way from the message but find the best way to plant it in hearts. Help us Lord.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

Stuart Townend wrote this song with Keith Getty. He felt that we must understand our faith is not a philosophy, transcendent thoughts about what God might be like, or a collection of fables and allegories. Our faith is rooted in history, in things that actually happened, and is backed up by evidence. We have a true story to tell. It paints the picture of Good Friday when Christ was tried, beaten, nailed to a cross, suffered and died, and rose again and explains the significance of it.

Oh, to see the dawn
Of the darkest day:
Christ on the road to Calvary.
Tried by sinful men,
Torn and beaten, then
Nailed to a cross of wood.

This, the power of the cross:
Christ became sin for us,
Took the blame, bore the wrath:
We stand forgiven at the cross.

Oh, to see the pain
Written on Your face
Bearing the awesome weight of sin;
Every bitter thought,
Every evil deed
Crowning Your bloodstained brow.

Chorus

Now the daylight flees,
Now the ground beneath
Quakes as its Maker bows His head.
Curtain torn in two,
Dead are raised to life;
‘Finished!’ the victory cry.

Chorus

Oh, to see my name
Written in the wounds,
For through Your suffering I am free.
Death is crushed to death,
Life is mine to live,
Won through Your selfless love.

Chorus
